THE MATRIX Cinematographer Blames Stanley Kubrick Book For The Two "Mind-Numbing" Sequels

The Matrix is widely considered a sci-fi matserpiece, but the sequels most definitely are not. Now, cinematographer Bill Pope has reflected on a crushing experience he blames on Stanley Kubrick...

Stanley Kubrick died in 1999 (the same year that The Matrix was released), but the legendary filmmaker has now been blamed for the poorly received sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Cinematographer Bill Pope has shed some light on what went wrong with those movies, describing his time working on them as "mind-numbing."

Talking on the Team Deakins podcast (via Yahoo), he revealed: "Everything that was good about the first experience was not good about the last two."

"We weren’t free anymore. People were looking at you. There was a lot of pressure. In my heart, I didn’t like them. I felt we should be going in another direction. There was a lot of friction and a lot of personal problems, and it showed up on screen to be honest with you. It was not my most elevated moment, nor was it anyone else’s."

"The Wachowskis had read this damn book by Stanley Kubrick that said, 'Actors don’t do natural performances until you wear them out,'" Pope recalled. "So let’s go to take 90! I want to dig Stanley Kubrick up and kill him. There is something about making a shoot that long, 276 shoot days, that is mind numbing and soul numbing and it numbs the movie."

As you might expect after his very honest assessment of those original Matrix sequels, Pope will not be returning for the fourth instalment. That was recently pushed to 2022 due to COVID-19, and you have to hope the cinematographer is having a slightly more pleasant time working on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings after what sounds like a hellish couple of years.

Did you guys enjoy The Matrix sequels back in 2003?

Fincher does this with his actors too. But the sequels were flawed due to the Wachowskis' bad writing and weird vision for how they wanted the story to progress.

Having said that, much of the imagery in 'Revolutions' was epic just for the 'wow' factor. The writing, not so much.

I really dont see how this applies here. The problem with the matrix sequels is because the story was written as one movie but it got stretched to 2 to make it a trilogy. Having reloaded more condensed with the fat cut out then making revelations the climax would've made an amazing movie. And its not like the "exhaustion" effected either movie. Performances remained consistent and choreography remained consistent.

@Origame - exactly. This is just Monday morning quarterbacking.

If they did 120 takes for each scene with a better script/story and the sequels scored 98% on RT...

...no one would be saying the 120 takes were too much.

Just like no says Kubricks films had too many takes. Except for maybe Scatman Crothers.

@IronGenesis - this whole argument has too many notes, if you know what i mean.

The sequels do not exist, the first movie is all there is.

@imnotwearinghockeypants - correct, though I’ll take some excerpts from part 2.

@imnotwearinghockeypants -

Me : Do not try and watch the sequels. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.

Neo : What truth...?

Me : There are no sequels.

Except the performances weren’t the problem. The action sequences weren’t the problem. It was all script and concept issues. Too often when a first movie has a twist that turns everything on it’s head they like to try to do it again with the sequels except they only succeed at counterfeiting elements people liked in the first movie.

@TheUnworthyThor - I would agree with you that the performances aren't the MAIN problem. The writing is convoluted, shallow, and dumb imo. The performances aren't great either, but that seems to be more a directorial choice in an attempt to make everything sound deeeep; make>>>>the>>>>>>characters>>>>>pronounce>>>>>>everything>>>>>slowly so it makes it sound like it's "heavy" man. It's not. It's just prententious dumb shit.

Me, patiently waiting for Cyberpunk 2077 and the Matrix, both starring Keanu Reeves in neo-noir again

I don't know why people ever thought these movies were about story and not about visual effects.

I enjoy all three films simply because I love the special effects. Story is for film festivals.

The first movie is a classic, The next two had some great action moments but that's about it.

@marvel72 - Action so good and so intense that it was like riding a roller coaster that gives you a chance to sleep between hills.

@plasticman - The start of reloaded, when Trinity jumps out of the window being pursued by an agent. The car chase as well was pretty special.
