Bryan Fuller, executive producer of the new series Star Trek: Discovery, has revealed some exciting information regarding casting and the setting of the show. During a panel at the Television Critics Association, Fuller discussed how the show will tie in to the overall Star Trek universe through "a specific incident in the Star Trek Universe". Fuller also went on to say that the series will focus on a female lieutenant commander, honing in on a story "about this woman's journey. In order to understand something completely alien to her, she has to understand herself."

This is definitely a departure from previous Star Trek television series, however it's interesting to note that Discovery will be "set in the "prime universe" of the original 1960 TV series...about 10 years before Captain Kirk's 5-year mission began." Fuller also disclosed some info about potential alien races, both new and some "reimaginings of existing aliens", namedropping a specific alien named Saru. Although no official casting has been announced, Fuller also stated Discovery will feature a gay character, "an addition significant to [Discovery's] gay producer".

Production of the show is set to begin in a few months, with the official release on CBS in January 2017. What do you think of these new...discoveries? Are you excited for Star Trek: Discovery? What's your favorite Star Trek show/movie? Sound off in the comments below!

Of course it's going to be female-led! I mean, we have Ghostbusters, Ocean's 8...

I hate the times we live in. (And I have NOTHING against women. But I have against feminist-driven ideas in Hollywood).

@kylo0607 - Yeah... Who would have thought that Star Trek could be female led.

It must be the times we live in.

Star Trek is dead, and that's okay. The franchise ran its course.

I hope someone makes something new with the spirit of Star Trek, but without the baggage. That's what will actually be interesting and worthwhile.

"about this woman's journey. In order to understand something completely alien to her, she has to understand herself." This sounds more like Eat, Pray, Love than Star Trek...

Say they don't have anything against female protagonists.

Complain every time a female protagonist is announced.

You know who you are, fellas.

Are we to bash this show cause it has a female lead while forgetting about Star Treks past female leads?

ive not really got anything against the LGBT community but for some reason I'm just not too fussed on them showing up in films and shows. I mean nowadays things have changed and there's talks about introducing LGBT characters in Star Wars, Marvel, Disney and now this. A lot of people are excited but I'm not. I'm not saying it's wrong or that it shouldnt be done but I don't understand why it's such a big deal. I mean I can understand actual people from the LGBT community but people who are not are excited. To be fair it kinda scares me a little because of rumors of actual already established characters e.g. Cap & Bucky and Luke Skywalker are rumored to go down that path and I don't want them to because that's not who they. Now don't think I hate LGBT people because of that. I mean if they cast Superman as an African American then I would be cross because that's not who he is but that doesn't mean I hate African Americans. I mean if Black Panther or Luke Cage were cast as Caucasian men I would be cross.
