Who is rumored to be the subject of the 3rd Star Wars spin off movie?

With the Star Wars talk and rumors starting to go from a simmer to a rolling boil- I thought it would be a good time to address one of the more recent rumors regarding the stand-alone spin off movies. We are hearing that the 3rd spinoff flick is about The X-Wing Fighter Pilot group, more specifically Luke Skywalker and will be called Red Five. Now the source for this tidbit is where this gets quite interesting. At a recent Hasbro marketing trade event in Germany, the company was discussing upcoming Star Wars toys and claimed the first two spin-offs are those long rumored Han Solo and Boba Fett origin stories, and the 3rd was about the X-Wing Pilots, which of course Luke was part of and would be called Red Five. You can take that for what its worth, but our pal Germain Lussier over at SlashFilm is reporting that Star Wars news sites such as Jedi News and Making Star Wars were asked to take the report down. In the past, this has been a good indication of the validity of report.

For those unaware, Red Five was the call sign that Luke was given in Star Wars Episode 1: A New Hope by the Rebel Alliance. He was the 5th member of that squadron. I am a sucker for any origin story, but a legit Luke Skywalker origin movie is something I would love to see. Maybe the film will focus on the history of the Red Five call sign, documenting the many pilots who have used it over the years? Maybe none of this is right? What do you think?

I for one think this is sick. I am picturing a film with the feel of a war flick focusing on the pilots, but set in space....I see promise in this.

Not a bad idea, but only if they have a solid lead.

Sounds like an awful idea.

Alexanderlykins, star wars was a cash grab since the beginning. That's why Lucas kept the merch rights knowing that was where he'd make the money. He intentionally made rotj a big toy commercial to pay for Skywalker Ranch and so on.

Doesn't make it a bad thing.

Also not sure if "red five" is mentioned enough in the article.

I see that argument. I am in no way a prequel fan but I can see where George was actually trying to say something relatively personal with them. I just think he lost any story telling ability. But rots surprisingly has a lot of elements that seem to echo the end of his marriage.

@Ruadh

I agree, George had some great ideas but they were only executed in broad strokes, and hew relied on CGI way to much. Another reason I am more than thrilled for Episode 7- No Lucas in the Director chair. JJ loves the source material so much, I know he will do it justice.

JJ also seems to be into practical effects more than Lucas these days. Star Trek was certainly good flavor. The red letter media guy did a good contrast between jj's trek and rots.

I'd be down with this but think this would do better as a TV show.

Have you read about how is creating a lot of practical set pieces? 3D printers!! JJ is very committed to advancing the technology of practical effects as was George as team back in the late 70's. JJ is truly getting to live his dream. He was 10 was Star Wars came out. I wonder if any of the ideas he had way back when have germinated into something magical?

They should adapt the script from Star Wars 1313 for the Boba Fett movie since they cancelled the game

I'd really like to see a movie about the early days of Rogue Squadron between A New Hope and the Empire Strikes Back, so this sounds promising. Luke was the founder of Rogue Squadron so the first movie should be about him, but have later movies focus on Wedge. Han Solo and Boba Fett spin off films sound good to me too.

Not excited for this, if it is true.

So is this adapted from the rumored Rebels TV series from a while back?
I'm all for a war movie or TV show about a squadron of X Wings, but no to cramming Skywalker in there. Use Biggs and Wedge as main characters.

Sounds false, especially given it is Starwars Episode IV: A new hope
