Star Wars: The Last Jedi was a divisive movie but it still did well at the box office. Solo: A Star Wars Story, on the other hand, was a major disappointment for Lucasfilm and it's led to the studio rethinking its plans and putting a number of spinoffs on hold as they go back to the drawing board. Now, Disney CEO Bob Iger has shared his thoughts on where things go from here and where they went wrong.
It appears as if he believes the blame lies with giving yearly Star Wars movies the green light!
"I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean we’re not gonna make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about. And we are just at the point where we’re gonna start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.’s. But I think we’re gonna be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that."
Thinking about it, launching a trilogy at the same time as a number of spinoffs was extremely ambitious and it appears as if Star Wars is a franchise which doesn't benefit from releasing a new chapter every six months or so, something which was evident from the lack of interest in Solo this May.
