With Star Wars: The Last Jedi on the horizon, many are excited to see the return of the new characters introduced in The Force Awakens. One of the new characters introduced was the ruthless General Hux, played by Domhnall Gleeson, and during an interview promoting his new film American Made, Gleeson discussed his reaction to reading the script for the first time and the conversation he had with writer/director Rian Johnson afterwards.

"When I read it I needed to talk to him, and I think that's always a good sign. I was like, 'Wow there's some stuff there which is kind of - not scary but different to what I expected,' and that's a really, really nice thing. I think that's a really positive thing, I think it's important for those films that we don't repeat ourselves. So I just wanted to talk to him, and when I talked to him he was so clear and so confident, not in a brash way but he knew the film he wanted to make, and it was a really lovely thing. Just to sit down with a filmmaker you really enjoy... but to see him, just the confidence of it and his excitement about what it could be and everything, it was really pleasing to see. Very calming. And I got really excited about being in it, and it was a really very, very cool experience working with him. I would love to work with him again, I really enjoyed it."

Gleeson also talked about his excitement of seeing the finished product with the rest of the audience.

"I'm just really interested to see the film now, as well. You never know what something's gonna be like. Even when you read the script, you don't know what the tone of something is gonna be. You can guess at it, but I can't wait to see it. I just wanna sit in a room full of people and watch that movie and see what it does to us."

And in regards to the recent (and polarizing) announcement that The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams would be returning to finish the sequel trilogy that he started, Gleeson shared his thoughts on that while also revealing that he's not sure whether or not he'll be sticking around after The Last Jedi.

"I found out like two seconds before, but nothing's revealed about which, if any of us, are in Episode IX or not. I think it's really cool that he's doing it, and I'm interested to see how he approaches it because he's a superb filmmaker. And it's closing out - they're doing it in trilogies aren't they?... See that's really cool, J.J. will do a fantastic job."

So what do you think? Are you excited for The Last Jedi? Are you excited for Episode IX? Do you hope General Hux sticks around for the whole trilogy? Sound off down below!

@smgmayhem -

It's a shame that i can take Jar Jar Binks more seriously than 'Garbage Compactor Phasma'

Kylo and Phasma are both more intimidating with their helmets on.

@Nightwing1015 -

Phasma is not intimidating in the slightest.

At least Kylo with helmet has a slightly better voice i guess.

@Scarilian - Phasma's just female Boba Fett.

These three films will be remembered similar to the prequels in regards to quality.

Lets look at the four villains here;

Hux - A random guy who made a Nazi style speech and briefly argued with the Darth Vader fanboy

Kylo - A fanfic styled off-spring of the previous cast who throws tantrums and wants to be like Darth Vader despite not understanding Darth Vader had a change of heart

Phasma - A female Storm Trooper who failed as a commander by not having people guard the shield room, resulting in her being easily captured and thrown into a garbage compactor

Snoke - An old taller version of Darth Sidious who has yet to do anything remotely intimidating and whose backstory will apparently not be developed in the movies

I'm not at all enthused about Abram's return - I think fan fiction is a good description; but then again, I felt similarly when Mignola put away his pencil and inks on Hellboy, but the new rostrum of artists has grown on me. At the end of the day, Star Wars will always be Lucas' baby and there will always be a sense of inauthentic it to anything anyone else does on screen for SW. I guess I would've felt better if they had at least used his story/treatments.

A trooper never removes their helmet. What is this bs?

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 -

Only thing that made her stand out was the fact she is female - hence why they removed the helmet for the photo shoot.

Plus having the helmet on would kind of remove the point of having the actress there.

@Scarilian - My thoughts too. I was actually impressed that they didn't remove it in TFA. A fail to see them succumb to it.

This along with Hamill being surprised by where they took Luke makes me think this movie won't be as predictable as most people think

@Chameleon - Which could be good, but honestly it worries me. When Luke Skywalker himself has issues with the direction of his own character, something's off. I'm not sure its a good sign that everyone who reads the script needs a sit-down conversation with Rian in order to be on board.

Discount Imperials looking like they're part of a rock band... I'm not at all impressed by these knock-off imperials. They look like tryhards.

And after their entirely racist portrayal of Finn in TFA, I have zero desire to spend money on this film.

@DerekLake - racist? Are you joking? What was racist about Finn's portrayal?
DerekLake

@Super12 - Finn, the only black character in this new trilogy, is an unskilled "sanitation worker" with a serial code for a name, running away from an all-white regime, and fawning over the white female lead. Black janitor, felon called by serial number, runaway slave, black guy who unsuccessfully falls for white girl... these are all largely racist tropes popular in Hollywood. And they gave ALL of them to Finn. While also making him a coward who lacks any real skills.

@DerekLake - you are seeing what you want to see. hate to break it to you but in reality, in the real world, that's not how Finn came across. To anyone. But when your whole worldview is filtered through race and victimization you see racism everywhere. Normal people see Finn as the hero, an average guy who bravely made the right decision to leave the (not all white) evil regime - who numbered EVERYONE not just him. He falls for the heroine, regardless of her skin color, which makes normal people happy to see. Yes they didn't fall in love right away, because thankfully the filmmakers decided to treat them like real people instead of cheesy romantic caricatures. Normal people are pulling for Finn, but recognize that heartbreak can happen to anyone and is a good thing to include in the cinematic experience, should it come to that. He then risks his life to help the Resistance and leads the secret mission that wins the battle. So how was he a coward?

Stop imagining racism where it doesn't exist. Stop trying to prove victimization.

Can't wait, really enjoyed his character.

Also, I need to see more of Kylo undercover boss sketches on SNL, was one of my favorites all time lmao.

For anyone to say these will be remembered like the prequels is ridiculous. It would not matter if these films were directed by God himself, fanboys will still complain that they are not as good. And the whole fan fic argument is equally ridiculous. The second film hasn't even premiered yet and it is already being condemned to the pits of nerd hell.
