A new, official Star Wars infographic has revealed the updated canon for all upcoming movies, TV shows, books and video games within the franchise.

Last year, Disney and Lucasfilm announced a new continuity that would be replacing the "Expanded Universe" (long considered canon by fans) and other Star Wars related games and fiction. This new continuity would only include the six previous Star Wars films, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and any future Star Wars material that is licensed or produced by Disney and Lucasfilm. The following timeline is included in the Amazon preview for the upcoming paperback edition of Star Wars: A New Dawn, the novel which acts as a prequel to the Star Wars: Rebels TV series.

While we already knew that 'Rebels' is considered canon (the time before A New Hope is a rather large 'grey area'), it's interesting to note the placement of the media in relation to the main installments of the series. The most notable is the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront video game. According to the new timeline, the game will take place in between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Another note of interest is the absence of the Marvel/Star Wars comic books, which are being considered canon and take place after A New Hope.

What are your thoughts on this new timeline of events?

Whatever, I don't need the stuff I like to be canon and I love "Star Wars the Old Republic".

@OneTrueLantern

I totally get that, and nothing in this new canon has really contradicted The Old Republic yet.

Cool. I love having the Star Wars universe be like a comic book universe with all these interconnecting cannon stories. Hopefully they can keep continuity errors to a minimum.

@Kurban

That is true.

I so wish they would do a movie in the Old Republic and explore the Jedi Order and the Sith.

That'd make me the happiest nerd on the planet.

Yeah, keeping certain things canon and others not is kind of pointless when the prequels themselves already ret-conned and outright contradicted multiple aspects of the originals.

The only things that should be considered are the live-action movies. Like the previous EU, most of the newly minted canon books will descend into mediocrity (if they haven't already) and make the universe insanely convoluted. Clone Wars and Rebels are complete garbage so those are write-offs.

As long as Legacy ends up being canon. I'm good.

I don't see Knights of the Old Republic. that makes me sad

I read that entire run! It was [frick]ing awesome.

I love (and hate) many things about the EU, however when it comes to "canon" I prefer J.J. Abrams canon, which he says is Episodes I, II, II, IV, V, VI, VII, but we know he really means Episodes IV, V, VI, VII.

@BatHeis

Its John Ostrander so I expect nothing less. Also, the art was awesome.

Or you can just accept that the prequels will forever be canon instead of projecting your own headcanon into another persons thought process.

I don't really care what a corporation that bought a franchise for $4 billion says is canon. Above all, my loyalty lies with those three films that define Star Wars. From the short footage we've seen so far, Episode VII has captured the ambiance and tone of the Original Trilogy more than any other Star Wars project ever has. Time will tell, but I have a feeling that Episode VII is J.J. Abrams' beautiful love letter to Episodes IV, V, and VI, and nothing else.

I'm mostly disturbed that no one is taking into consideration the two Ewok films. How are those not canon? I can only hope Wicket returns as an old battle-hardened, grizzled, bad A warrior. Ha...

It's bullshit that Shadow Of The Empire isn't cannon. After they pushed it's legitimacy so hard.

It's official: "Rogue One" and "Episode VIII" are NOT cannon.

Fair. I just loved the one sith and Cade. So [frick]ing cool.

The one work of fiction that could do SO many great things with alternate universes does not utilize it. Oh well, I still own KOTOR 1 & 2 and Republic Commando. I'm good.

@krylonshadow

Fair enough, I don't really care about the whole prequel "debacle" as the only one I really hate from them is Ep 2 while Ep 1 is alright and Ep 3 is my second favorite after ROTJ. Mostly I feel the whole backlash against it is part of the prevailing mentality of something is either DUR B3ST TING EEEVAARRR or DUR WURST TING EEEEVVARRR with no middle ground existing anymore.

That and people getting overly emotional about fiction which is something that really needs to [frick]ing die out already.

Aren't the comic canon as well?

Me too. However, this is what it should happen: After the releases of Episodes VII,VIII and IX and the spin-off movies, Disney should hire Drew Karpyshyn as a co-writer to make a movie trilogy based on Knights of the Old Republic!
