STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Director Rian Johnson On How Leia's Role Has Changed And Where We Find The Resistance

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson spills the beans on the changing role of Carrie Fisher's Leia Organa in the movie and what the deal is with the Resistance when we meet up with them again.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will pick up shortly after the events of The Force Awakens but if you thought the destruction of The First Order's Starkiller base will have made life easier for the Resistance, think again. With the Republic destroyed, they're struggling. "They’re a small band that’s now cut off, on its own, and hunted when the Republic is shattered," director Rian Johnson says. "When the First Order did that hit, the Resistance is isolated, and they’re very vulnerable. That’s where we pick them up."

General Leia Organa meanwhile is still grieving over the loss of Han Solo after his murder at the hands of their son Kylo Ren and the filmmaker went on to reveal where exactly we find her in The Last Jedi. "She’s suffered quite a bit. While I was figuring out what her deal was going to be in this film, it’s one of the things I talked about with Carrie before I started writing: where the character would go."

Much of Fisher's story arc in The Last Jedi will apparently revolve around her newfound friendship with Poe Dameron and Entertainment Weekly confirms that Episode IX is now being rewritten to reflect the actress's sudden death last year. However, her role in this movie hasn't changed and Johnson says he hopes that fans are going to be happy with what he's done with Leia in this highly anticipated movie.

"There’s no way that we could’ve known this would’ve been the last Star Wars movie she would be in, so it’s not like we made the film thinking that we were bringing closure to the character," Johnson explains. "But watching the film, there’s going to be a very emotional reaction to what she does in this movie." How would you like to see Leia's story brought to a close? Share your thoughts below.

"They’re a small band that’s now cut off"

So it's now even more like the Original Trilogy than it was before.

Damn, and that trailer is probably still months away. The one for TFA was only released in october when they opened presales. Also, Carrie Fischer could really rock grey hair, holy crap.

@Asturgis - I expect we will be getting the next trailer this month. TFA benefited greatly from anticipation being the first film to be released in year + being a sequel to the orginal trilogy. People were going to go see it regardless.

TLJ isn't going to have that big of anticipation behind it. I think the secrecy around this film is going to have a negative effect soon if they don't start marketing it properly.
I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and currently I'm more excited for Rebels (I. Need to what happened to Ahsoka!!!) over TLJ.

@StormXmen123 - Bro, Rebels is. So. Good.

Huge Star Wars fan as well, been playing the tabletop RPG dice 6 and 20 for 20 years, played both TCGs, read pretty much every comic since the 1993 relaunch and a few before, and I have over 200 novels on shelf. It's safe to say I'm a bit of a zealot lol

Rian Johnson spoke to Carrie Fisher, a writer and script doctor, about where she thought the Leia character should go.

I'm liking this dude, a lot. It's gonna be a real shame if I have to hate him if this movie sucks.

"Emotional reaction to what she does in this movie"....damn. Wonder if she's gonna sacrifice herself or something like that to give her character closure? I'm gonna cry no matter what so......ya.

Wait a minute. When the empire fell, the republic didn't get restored? If so, what happened? Did those five or six shot for the Death Star 3.0 destroy Corusant or something? Also, how the hell is this any different than eps 4-6? They were cut off and isolated then? I swear the more you say things have changed the more they appear the same.

IronMountaineer - 8/11/2017, 7:19 AM
@Darkknight23 - No, it did get restored, but under the new republic, corusant wasn't even an option as the capitol anymore, it was now on a rotational basis, and the capitol of the new republic was the Hosnian system I think, which was totally wiped out by the star killer base. The resistance is just a group under Organa within that new republic, that believed that the First Order was attempting to rebuild the empire, where the rest of the republic and the galactic senate only viewed them as a "neo-nazi" type and a non-threat. So they were caught off guard. Honestly the story is a natural progression if we look at how things play out in history. All these "they're just repeating the OT" arguments are getting tired. People need to dig a little deeper

@IronMountaineer - The people who make those arguments are the ones that enjoy movies for their surface value.
I say that because all they see and whine about are "oh, they took that from this part of this movie, they did this just like that, oh we've seen it before, blah blah blah".
What they fail to see is the undercurrents. For instance, TFA HAD to rehash, it had to flip the reset button from the horrible prequels and announce...by repeating, by homage, by whatever you want to call it...that his marks a return to the magic and the dedication that made the original trilogy great. W/out it, it could have gone the way of the prequels and been horrible.

Now that the switch has been reset, my hope is that they take the new characters that they've now pigeon holed with the original crew and create a luscious world around them, w/out rehashing again. That would be the real mistake, in my eyes

@Pathogen - agreed. Well put!

ODanil - 8/11/2017, 5:29 PM
@Pathogen - I find the REHASH argument VERY WEAK. They didn't rehash. They didn't go "oh, let's copy things from the original". Why would they do that? Do people think they're dumb? seriously

However, have I always wanted to see a trench run with today's VFX? DEFINITELY! That's what they went for and I love it.
Pathogen
Pathogen - 8/12/2017, 7:17 AM
@ODanil - Well, they certainly took elements and mirrored them on purpose. So I can see their argument, but I wish they'd delve a little deeper and recognize WHY they had to do it. Unfortunately, these boards are littered with people who can't think for themselves...so...we end up with a lot of crap movies because that horde of morons are buying tix to stupid shizzle

Darkknight23 - 8/12/2017, 2:04 PM
@IronMountaineer - Where did you get this information? I'm trying to follow the sequence of events. That 30 plus year gap between ROTJ and TFA is so nebulous to me. Without that bit of information, the new film does seem like a rehash and not in a good way. Say what you want about the prequels. They weren't perfect. I think Lucas made some serious missteps in Ep1. But the politics were sound and it made since for the rest of the films. The new films just aren't resonating with me. I know it's unpopular to have a contrary opinion on this site.

IronMountaineer - 8/12/2017, 7:13 PM
@Darkknight23 - You're entitled to whatever opinion you want man but those are the facts of the story line. Their mentioned in the film and fleshed out even further in the Aftermath books that are set right after ROTJ and are official canon.
