STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE Comic Book Appears To Reveal A Different Future For Anakin Skywalker

Marvel Comics has shared new preview pages from a 25th anniversary Star Wars: The Phantom Menace comic going on sale this week, but does it offer a glimpse at what might have been for Anakin Skywalker?

2024 is the 25th anniversary of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. While the movie was written off as a disappointment by longtime fans when it hit theaters in 1999, many '90s kids grew up on the prequels and don't have a bad word to say about them.

The movie returns to the big screen this weekend, but before that, a tie-in comic hits stands on Wednesday.

A first look has been released (via SFFGazette.com) revealing an unseen moment from the movie; a young Anakin Skywalker dreams of the future, imagining himself as a brave Jedi Knight who returns to Tatooine - with a yellow lightsaber in hand - to free his mother from slavery.

While this is just a dream, Anakin's connection to the Force at least opens the door to the possibility of this being a glimpse into an alternate future (one where he perhaps didn't fall under Palpatine's spell and become the Sith Lord known as Darth Vader).

A yellow lightsaber is interesting seeing as Rey used one in The Rise of Skywalker's closing moments and it's since been revealed that this colour blade is meant to represent balance and duality...both of which seem very relevant to Anakin.

The comic, written by Darth Vader scribe Greg Pak, provides new context around this and other moments in the film, mostly from the perspective of Annie. "I was eight when A New Hope came out, so for my formative years, Star Wars was synonymous with the original trilogy," Pak explains.

"But I delved deep into the prequels when I came on board as the writer of Marvel's Darth Vader comics, watching and rewatching all of them."

"And I found myself dazzled by the long game George Lucas was playing in laying out the tragedy of Darth Vader," the writer concludes. "It's been an absolute thrill to contribute to that legacy by revisiting The Phantom Menace with new scenes from the point of view of young Anakin."

@ShimmyShimmyYA - I’m guessing also supposed to be his imagining of what a lightsaber looks like and he’s never seen one. The blade looks like it comes a little more to a point like a sword.

@datfigures - good point there. It’s a minor detail but really sticks out when you’re used to only seeing the red blue green

One minute Disney is like…
“The past is dead, bury it”
Now they’re like….
“Look at the past, ain’t it great”

@AnthonyVonGeek - The character who says that is shown to be in the wrong in the same damn film.

Why does he have a facial scar in his own dream?

Anakin in TPM: "I had a dream I was a Jedi. I came back here and freed all the slaves."

*Comes back only to watch his mother die. Never frees any slaves.
The Jedi also seem fine with slavery and do nothing to end it.*

I wouldn't mind a What If kind of show exploring such possible alternate futures. Guess the What If for Episode I would be What If Qui-Gon lived.

Anyway, I hope they do another rerelease soon as I won't be able to watch this one on the big screen, since it's only showing for one day at cinemas near me. I'm actually excited for this.

The Phantom Menace was my first Star Wars on the theaters (I born in 1980, so I couldnt see the original trilogy on the big screen for obvious reasons)
And I can say that was a HUGE experience for me. I will always love The Phantom Menace. Its my favorite prequel movie

I really don't like Disney SW. This looks so dumb. Disney killed the EU just to take a ton from it without crediting the original people who wrote the stories and characters.
