THE THING: Creating Juliette's Terrifying Transformation

Academy Award-winning character effects company, StudioADI, has released a new video revealing how Juliette's (portrayed by Kim Bubbs) monstrous transformation in 2011's The Thing was created.

"Transforming the female character Juliette was an exciting and unique challenge for THE THING prequel. The plan was to "thing out" Juliette from a human to a threatening, terrifying creature. Our approach was to design and build the final creature as an animatronic prosthetic that a performer would wear on set. See Juliette's evolution from illustration to maquette to final sculpture." - ADI

PLOT - Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

THE THING (2011) was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen, from a script written by Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer. The film starred: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

Pretty underrated horror movie I thought, probably a bit too much CGI but a decent follow up (or prequel) to the 1980's one.

IF THAT WAS PRACTICAL IT LOOKED NEAR CG

I liked the movie. I thought they did a good job of filling you on what happened at the Norwegian camp and it led right up to the beginning of the original. When I watch this movie I always watch the original right after it.

Same.

I thought it would have been a terrible attempt to compliment carpenter's 'The Thing' (big fan of his work in general) but I actually enjoyed it.

It wasn't perfect, and it clearly reused the same scenarios (I suppose it had to though, right?) but it was definitely no slouch for the genre. The creature transformations were awesome and MEW was a solid lead.

I'd actually watch it again.

Well it started off CGI for a more believable transition from normal looking woman to twisted monstrosity, but ended up practical once that was over with.

Watch the video of them building the prosthetic, it's pretty cool.

The prequel was a nice effort in terms of answering questions from the 1st movie but fell short in doing anything new or daring either!Unlike Carpenter's movie, with a fraction of todays budget, created a horrific yet mind-blowing story of survival against an alien entity with shape-shifting powers in a hostile environment.Carpenter's The Thing is a classic and one of the best movie ever made and definitely in my top ten favorite movies! And hopefully we will never see a remake of the movie either!

I liked how they used both CGI and practical effects in this movie. Still it is not as great as the practical effects int eh original but still pretty good. Also I thought this was a really good prequel to the original especially all of the detail they added by watching the original.

I thought this movie was okay. Although i prefer John Carpenter's The Thing. It's one of my favorite horror films.

The movie good I like it just that the producer ruin the creature live action effect by CGI over them. CGI cartoony doesn't have same effect as seeing live action look more real believable. That why John carpenter film is so awesome.

This movie was a good attempt. But the original is still my favorite.

If you want to know about the events that lead to the Carpenter movie, then sure, this movie's for you! There's some interesting stuff in the movie with some pretty good special effects but the storytelling isn't as compelling as Carpenter's movie! And as you're watching the film, you'll see that the film-makers have a love for Carpenter's The Thing in the details that connect the two films!A decent movie,a good attempt but far from being a classic!Better than what the critics said!

"This movie was a good attempt. But the original is still my favorite."

This movie could never replace the original, but I don't think it was ever attempting to do that. It was supposed to compliment it as a prequel.

It really wasn't a competition between the two films.

Apologies. I shouldn't have been so vague. I know it was a prequel. But in some ways, It felt a bit disconnected from John Carpenter's version. Maybe it was the overabundance of CGI used for the creature. Wish they'd used more practical effects. That's one of the elements that makes Carpenter's version so remarkable. But it wasn't just the effects. The characters in Carpenter's were intriguing as well. The characters in the prequel felt a bit underdeveloped. Still worth watching though.

I thought this ended up bein' a good prequel for The Thing. I was actually surprised that I liked it as much as I did. The Thing from the 80's was, and always will be my favorite monster, it never looked the same twice. Followin' Escape From New York, The Thing was a great way for Kurt Russel to get back into movies.
@monkeyballs, Keith David in Men At Work was funny as hell, I liked how he kept notes that turned out to be drawin's of carnage in Vietnam, and the two cops handcuffed to the merry go round never gets old.
