The star of Star Trek: Into Darkness and the upcoming Marvel Galactic Guardians Of The Galaxy Zoe Saldana is pretty much involved in everything these days! Not to mention being a part of the highest grossing film of all time, 2009's Avatar. The actress recently discussed with MTV why Avatar 2 hasn't started filming yet and when we can expect that to happen.

"I know that he's sort of been removing himself from things that might distract him so that he can focus on doing the final tweaks on the scripts. He did share that he's in a very interesting and fragile place, because the story is dictating itself."

"You walk a fine line when you're the creator of the story you're going to tell, of the manipulation that you may have unconsciously of the story and the characters versus allowing the story to unfold it, because you did create such a monumental and solid platform that they're just living and breathing organisms and they're the ones that need to make their own decisions. I'm geek talking right now, but that's how intense it affects me and how I feel about amazing storytellers like James Cameron, like J.J. Abrams. They create things that are real out of unimaginable scenarios, and that is beautiful to me."

The original Avatar 2 release date was set for December 2014 which now seems highly unlikely. Do you think six, possibly seven years between films is too long?

Avatar is a 2009 American epic science fiction film written and directed by James Cameron, and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, Joel David Moore, Giovanni Ribisi and Sigourney Weaver. The film is set in the mid-22nd century, when humans are mining a precious mineral called unobtanium on Pandora, a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na'vi – a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora. The film's title refers to a genetically engineered Na'vi body with the mind of a remotely located human, and is used to interact with the natives of Pandora.

Avatar was awesome IMO
Can't wait to see this underwater mo/cap effect
and how the story reaches into the oceans of Pandora

I'm hoping if Marvel or DC haven't done Namor or Aquaman by then this'll inspire them

While Avatar lacked much in story... the visuals, cinematography, and score made up for it. Hating Avatar is an easy bandwagon to jump on, especially as it ushered in the 3D craze, but I think it doesn't deserve half the hate it gets. And the fact that Cameron is taking his time with the sequels means he does care about doing something new with the next films and he's not just doing a cash grab.

One thing I like about Cameron is that he tries to push the envelope as far as a cinema experience goes. And I think that people get caught up in the things wrong with films or directors that they forget what they actually brought to cinema on a larger scope.

For instance, @rocky I completely agree with your final statement. In fact its one of the first things I thought of when I heard about the underwater mo-cap technology he was developing for Avatar 2. Aquaman and/or Namor can borrow the technology to create great underwater based films. So for all you people out there who think Avatar 2 is a stupid idea, just think that they're paving the way for some great uses for the technology.

haha you sheep can bitch all you want but avatar was awesome. those of you that think it was boring, fine... that's ok if that's what you think. but the rest of you yapping about pocahontas/ferngully/whatever... do you really think you know what you're talking about? whatever you're saying it copied from was all copied from something else anyway.

most stories are cobbled together from bits and pieces of childhood memories and myths. star wars was WAY more of a ripoff than avatar... the hulk is a combination of the werewolf story and the jewish myth of the golem... batman is zorro... green lantern comes from aladdin's lamp... et cetera.

the bottom line is, no matter what the origin of the story was, it was an amazing presentation with fully immersive, 3d-conscious storyboarding and cinematography that made most people totally forget it was a fancy cartoon. it was big and bold and bright and whether or not you agree with the politics, it had the balls to wear its heart on its sleeve and make a damn statement.

oh and when you say it's pocahontas, are you talking about the "lovers from two worlds" angle? uhhh... what about west side story, footloose, dirty dancing, aladdin, dragons: fire and ice, super 8, and every other one of a bajillion stories about star-crosed lovers? did they all rip off pocahontas? no, they ripped off romeo and juliet, which probably ripped off something else. it's called a TROPE, people, look it up.

oh last thing on the rant list... "unobtanium."

if you think the name is dumb, it isn't—YOU ARE. it isn't dumb, it's IRONIC! he's making a statement about how commercial science takes the beauty and mystique out of everything in nature. tell me, how is "unobtanium" any stupider than the REAL elements "californium," "einsteinium,"francium" or "americium"??? it isn't... it's exactly the kind of name someone would use if he were trying to get people to pay an obscene price for a new discovery.

A little aggressive AlternateNo4, but all good valid points.. however I think you inadvertently brought up the reason why people didn't like it --- "...it was a fancy cartoon"

People went in expecting sic-fi and got a disney story. Complete with stereotypes and unrealistically happy endings.

I myself enjoyed Avatar, I went back to watch it a second time.. but purely because I loved the art and cinematography of the movie and enjoyed just watching it without trying to read too much into it or critique the story, and I think if people watched the movie like that they would enjoy it as much as I did.

and @EXODUZ while you're right, too, i think you're giving people too much credit, and maybe giving cameron too little. this was a morality play and therfore what you call "stereotypes" i'll call "archetypes." white knight, black knight, damsel, mage, confronting the evil in oneself, the whole shebang... they're all in there.

as for the happy ending, i guess it's easier to swallow if one agrees with cameron's politics... and i freely admit that i loved watching indigenous peoples, wild animals and mother nature herself join forces to whip the shit out of greedy, environment-raping white people. no, it's never happened that way in reality, but in a straight-up allegory like avatar, the moral is only delivered if the righteous overcome the oppressor.
