SHANG-CHI 2 Release Date Rumored To Have Been Revealed, And It May Be A Long Way Off

Following the success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Shang-Chi 2 is currently in development, but a rumor suggests the Marvel Studios sequel is still somewhat far away.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings arrived in 2021 to critical and financial acclaim. The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, earned over $430 million worldwide—an impressive amount considering that, at the time of its release, many were still not fully comfortable with going back into theaters. A few months after its release, it was announced that a sequel was in development, written and directed by Cretton.

In the time since the announcement, however, the director was hired to helm 2025's Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. That, combined with Cretton's Wonder Man series for Disney+, put into question how long it would be until Shang-Chi 2 arrived in theaters. The sequel was not given a release date at Marvel Studios' SDCC 2022 panel or at D23, but a new rumor purports to have revealed when Shang-Chi 2 will come out and, if accurate, it means the movie is still quite a long way off.

The moderators at MarvelStudiosSpoilers on Reddit put together a list of MCU-related information they received. It was split into two sections: “Trusted Sources” and “Unverified Sources.” Under the former, it was stated that Shang-Chi 2 is slated to release on February 14, 2025, which would mean the film will come out three years and five months after its predecessor.

That is one of Marvel Studios’ mystery dates revealed at SDCC (via Collider), and is one of four dates planted by the House of Ideas for 2025. The other offerings scheduled for that year are The Kang Dynasty (May 2), an untitled project (July 25) and Avengers: Secret Wars (November 7).

While this is currently a rumor, Charles Murphy, from the website Murphy's Multiverse, backed up the information, tweeting: "If you haven't noticed, this is something I've talked about for quite a while now and I would concur with this source."

Furthermore, Shang-Chi 2 coming out in February 2025 makes sense, given that it appears Marvel Studios announced all the projects it's scheduled to release from now through 2024 at SDCC 2022.

What Could This Rumored Release Date Mean For Shang-Chi?

Shang-Chi-Banner-2

If the rumored release date is true, it would mean Shang-Chi 2 will arrive shortly before the concluding chapters of the Multiverse Saga. This is interesting, because it could hint at Shang-Chi’s post-credits scene having been an early breadcrumb for the upcoming Avengers films. The sequence showed Shang-Chi discussing his rings with Wong, Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers. Wong informed the hero that the weapons were acting as a beacon, having sent a message to an undisclosed location.

The tease seemed to have major implications not only for Shang-Chi, but also for the MCU as a whole—specifically, as mentioned, for the next Avengers-level event. Should the sequel's rumored release date be accurate, Shang-Chi 2 coming out shortly before the Multiverse Saga’s climax could give validity to the idea that the Ten Rings have something to do with either The Kang Dynasty and/or Secret Wars.

For now, though, there is little to go on regarding what the sequel will be dealing with. And judging by how far away the film seems to be, it could be a while until a better picture for Shang-Chi's next adventure is able to be formed.

It’s important to note that, though the movie is rumored to be relatively far-off, it doesn’t necessarily mean audiences won’t see Simu Liu's character in the next two years. Marvel Studios has made a habit of having long gaps between franchise installments, shown by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (it released over five years after Doctor Strange), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (six years after Vol. 2), Thor: Love and Thunder (over four years after Ragnarok) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (four years after Ant-Man and the Wasp).

Despite the long wait between sequels, the films’ protagonists tend to show up in other projects in between. Thor and the Guardians, for example, were featured in Infinity War and Endgame; Ant-Man and Wasp also appeared in Endgame, while Doctor Strange had roles in Ragnarok, Infinity War, Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home prior to Multiverse of Madness.

Taking that background into consideration, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Shang-Chi appear in another MCU project (or projects) prior to the release of his sequel.

I wasn't in love with the first film but I thought it was pretty good. Def will check out the sequel in theaters this time....pending what it is about.

Whenever it is, I have a lot of excitement and hope that it can live up to how fantastic the first one is.

The unspoken poetry during the scene with Shang's mom and Wenwu "danced" paralleling the final fight scene where Wenwu finally sees the mother alive in his boy was brilliant.

Give me some more of that level of writing with a deeper exploration of Ta Lo, please, my body is ready.

@LiteraryJoe - damn, this made me want to watch it again. I don't think I noticed that first go round

@MyCoolYoung - Dude definitely check it out. When the music plays and their eyes lock during both sequences was such good storytelling without dialogue. I don't think the movie gets enough credit because people get mad about the CGI in act three but there is brilliance in that film.

@LiteraryJoe - I noticed that too, and that was so cool to see.

Shang-Chi might be formulaic (whatever that is), but it sure allowed for great moments like that. The best pay-offs are to set-ups you didn't know were set-ups.

@bkmeijer1 - You said it, man. Callback writing is the best, it strikes gold with comedy but also has incredible implications in serious stories if written correctly. In both instances, it elevates the media.

@LiteraryJoe - ''it strikes gold with comedy''

Yeah, I loved it when that portable hand grenade speaker joke got paid off in Love & Thunder! Wait...

But yeah, narritive callbacks are great. Shang-Chi did it well, but Infinity War and Endgame still take the cake for me in that aspect.

@bkmeijer1 - I haven't been able to finish it since my first theater viewing. I want to like it better but I genuinely fell asleep. Engage me, Marvel!

bkmeijer1 - 9/18/2022, 11:48 AM
@LiteraryJoe - I don't blame, because it doesn't always feel as engaging. If I were to describe the movie, I'd probably say aimless or directionless.

@bkmeijer1 - Exactly, even more so seeing some of the deleted scenes!

SonOfAGif - 9/18/2022, 12:24 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Despite Thor Love and Thunder being a comedy festival it did have a beautiful moment that felt like unspoken poetry. When Thor was begging for Jane not to help because he loved her and knew she may not have a tomorrow. It was the first time in all the movies Thor declined help. He has always been bout building an army of strong champions to battle and knew the consequences of war. But for Jane he specifically refused. It was nice to see Thor break his oath for combat because Jane was truly the one person he couldn't lose. And he still lost her.

@SonOfAGif - Anything with Jane was really well done (except for the Stage Four joke) and was what I wanted the movie to focus one.

Still wonder why Thor didn't take Val with him though, given that she was saying she's all about dying in battle earlier in the movie.

@LiteraryJoe - I will Roger that. I actually liked the 3rd act. I'm not a CGI stickler, though.

Most people notice most of the CG in any given scene, then say something in regards to one or two scenes of noticeable effects. It's not real. Dragons don't exist, lol

Shang-Chi 2 is going to have that Captain Marvel box office effect because it will lead in Kang Dynasty which is coming out in May that year.
Origame
Origame - 9/18/2022, 11:00 AM
@TheShellyMan - don't see it too much. Captain marvel got its success because infinity war promised captain marvel was in some way gonna address that cliffhanger. And that was like max hype for the mcu. Both of those really don't apply to shang chi. The mcu isn't nearly as popular now and we won't have a good grasp of the story of these two avengers movies until Kang dynasty releases.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 9/18/2022, 2:54 PM
@Origame - unfortunately I agree. However! I still think a popular property like Thor with good word of mouth Shang chi can turn it all around.

The shows mostly suck and will stay that way sorry to say

I had totally forgotten that post credits scene. If that's not paying off til 2025 then that's a giant blow to all the guys who have been saying Marvel has no plan anymore.

Now that you describe it, I am curious what the hell they were talking about in that scene haha.

@TheManWithoutFear - I see Shang Chi appearing in other productions between now and the sequel. The same way Dr. Strange was handled. He had his solo movies years apart but we've had plenty of strange in the interim
