The Rock Clarifies Anti-Hero BLACK ADAM Comment; Talks About Facing 'Batman' & 'Superman'

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has previously stated that his take on DC supervillian Black Adam would be more of an anti-hero, but in an interview with Total Film he says he thinks that's actually something he could "grow into". He also comments on joining the wider DC Cinematic Universe.

The Rock (or, Dwayne Johnson as he's now known) features on this month's cover of Total Film Magazine as his character from upcoming action/disaster flick, San Andreas. Of course you CBMers won't be too interested in that, but the mag also quizz him about his role as Black Adam in Warner Bros' Shazam adaptation. Johnson previously referred to the live-action incarnation of the character as an "anti-hero", suggesting that we may not be looking at a simple good VS. evil story when the movie hits in a few years time. "I think Black Adam is going to grow into becoming an anti-hero," he explains when asked about this. "It’s all written within the spirit of respecting and paying homage to the comics. As we know, Black Adam started out as a slave. When he’s given the powers, he utilised them. Then in the wake of his powers, tragedy strikes, which turns his sentiment and tone in terms of psychology."

That seems to suggest that he'll definitely be a full-on antagonist in Shazam, but the potential is there for him to be fleshed out a bit more sympathetically in future movies. Speaking of which, Johnson also talks about one day facing off against the likes of the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight when DC's cinematic universe finally begins to take shape. "It was all agreed that the worlds are all interconnected" he reaffirms. "One day you will see Black Adam go at it with Superman or Batman or any of the DC characters. But that said, there’s a great independence to Black Adam from the DC world, allowing us to inject, not only viciousness, but also winking humour." Exciting stuff. For more, be sure to pick up the latest issue of Total Film, which is on sale this Friday.

@gliderman I wish he were playing Shazam. His age, and boyish charm would have played very well. At least he's still dreamy.

He's not wrong. In a way Black Adam is a bit of an Anti Hero more Anti villain I'd say. Like a more extreme version of Namor. I mean, Adam's main goal is to protect Khandaq, he just goes about it in a very violent way.

fresh rumor : It appears that theater actor Dan Amboyer, who is credited as playing a "Drone Pilot" in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, could turn out to be Hal Jordan.

It's the perfect character for the rock because just like the comics Black Adam is ubiquitous in the DC universe. yes he's primarily a Shazam villain but he's fought everyone
