6 Most Likely Villains Logan Marshall-Green Could Be Playing In SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING
The latest mysterious casting addition for Spider-Man: Homecoming is Prometheus' Logan Marshall-Green, and with signs pointing to him being a bad guy, we've rounded up some exciting possibilities.
We still don't know who everybody is in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but the latest major casting addition to the movie came a few days ago when Logan Marshall-Green boarded the movie. While the Prometheus star (and Tom Hardy lookalike) may not be a huge name, the fact that he's playing a villain here is definitely a big deal, and now the question on the minds of fans is who that can possibly be.
An easy answer would be The Tinkerer considering the fact that he's been rumoured to be in the reboot, but that doesn't feel right to me. Plus, with still no official word on who Michael Keaton will play (despite all the signs pointing to The Vulture), we still don't really know what kind of direction Spider-Man: Homecoming is heading in. However, I have a few theories as to who he might be.
So, with that in mind, these are the most likely (and exciting) possibilities for his mysterious role...
6. Shocker
Despite never really being all that great a threat to Spider-Man, Shocker is someone comic book fans have been clamouring to see on the big screen for years now. One of my biggest gripes with the hero's previous movies is that we never got to see Spidey take out a lower tier villain before tackling the big bad, leaving us to assume that most of his time is just spent stopping petty crimes until a new big bad shows up.
Having Shocker make a cameo appearance (in a similar way to the Ultimate Spider-Man comic books) would be a lot of fun, and gives Spider-Man: Homecoming the chance to launch straight into an action-packed opening as the wall-crawler takes down Shocker and some of his gang. Would this be a waste of Marshall-Green? Some might argue that, but he could still make an impact with this memorable cameo and possibly even return down the line somewhere.
5. The Vulture (Wait, What?!)
Yes, I'm well aware that Michael Keaton looks set to take on the role of The Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but assuming this movie follows the comic books (and that awesome animated series from the 90s), it's possible that the villain will have the ability to drain the life force from others in order to regain his youth. If it's true that he uses Chitauri tech, that would explain where he gets such a bizarre ability, while his story arc revolving around the desire to be young again would be different to what we've seen before.
My gut tells me that Marvel will just use CGI to make Keaton look younger, but that tech is still pretty expensive, and with a 25 year gap between him and Marshall-Green, it might just make more sense for him to take on the role of Toomes in places. Ultimately, I think this is fairly unlikely, but him being the second Vulture - Blackie Drago - is also a possibility.
4. Ezekiel
Maybe it's just me, but I would love to see these new Spider-Man movies delve into the mystical side of Peter Parker's powers (especially as Homecoming is released hot on the heels of Doctor Strange). If this movie does start teasing that, then ending with the appearance of Ezekiel would make for one hell of a cliffhanger. Initially appearing to warn Spider-Man about Morlun, it was later revealed that Ezekiel - who had all of the same powers as Peter - actually intended to sacrifice the hero to the mystical being who gave him his abilities in order to save his own skin.
While Marshall-Green is quite a bit younger than the comic book version of Ezekiel, he's still a lot older than Tom Holland, so their unique dynamic could easily be preserved. Introducing Ezekiel as a mentor of sorts would also mean that Tony Stark wouldn't necessarily need to be brought back for the sequel.
3. Ned Leeds
We've seen both Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy used as love interests in previous Spider-Man movies, and while Liz Allen is a very real possibility for Homecoming, I'd much prefer to see the spotlight move to Betty Brant, Peter Parker's first love from the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko days. The age thing complicates things here as Marshall-Green is nearing 40 and Betty would have to be under 18 to realistically date Peter, but there are a few different ways to get around that (the main one being just dropping the romance betwen Ned and her).
Regardless, introducing him as some sort of foil to the up and coming photographer could work, especially if the sequel adapts the storyline which saw the Daily Bugle reporter framed as being the Hobgoblin. That character showing up may require the Green Goblin first, but I'm sure there's a way Marvel could shake things up and find a way to make it work.
2. Norman Osborn
The Osborns were a huge part of Sam Raimi's trilogy and based on the events of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (and a deleted scene featuring Norman Osborn's decapitated head), that franchise was also going to end up putting the spotlight on them in a big way. For that reason alone, Marvel and Sony may want to avoid returning to this particular well for the foreseeable future, but what a shame that would be!
We've yet to see what I would consider to be the true Green Goblin on the big screen, and there's still so much more which can be done with Norman Osborn. He's a character with the potential to become the Marvel Cinematic Universe's next big bad - see: Dark Reign - and that's a battle the new wall-crawler could be at the forefront of. Mashall-Green would be a younger Norman than we've seen in the past, but I'd say he looks the part and could easily could bring something different to the role.
1. Otto Octavius
So, right about now, you're thinking Marshall-Green looks absolutely nothing like Doctor Octopus, right? While it's true that he doesn't bear a resemblance to the classic pudgy version of the iconic villain, he could very easily pass for the Ultimate Universe's Otto Octavius or even the regular version who underwent a redesign as a trenchcoat wearing badass (of sorts) in the mid-2000s.
If we're not going to see Norman Osborn pulling the strings in the background, then Otto would definitely work, especially as he's the one who founded the Sinister Six in the comic books. That team making their big screen debut is long overdue, and regardless of whether the MCU's Otto has ties to Stark Industries or is somehow linked to the spider which bit Peter, there's a lot of potential here. Marshall-Green could easily handle such a role, and as I said, he looks the part of a more formidable Doc Ock.
