Alex Kurtzman Teases VENOM; "You Can Do Things That You Can't With SPIDER-MAN"

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 producer and writer drops a few hints about the dark direction that the Venom movie he intends on directing will take, and much to the relief of many fans also confirms that he has no involvement with 2018's The Amazing Spider-Man 3...

Despite the fact that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci's screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was not well received by a lot of critics and fans, the former is still attached to helm Venom (which has been rumoured to be called Venom/Carnage) for Sony Pictures. There's currently no firm word on any sort of release date, leading many to believe that the spin-off - which has been rumoured for a number of years - will never happen. Regardless, when MTV News caught up with Kurtzman to ask about the project recently, he said: "The idea is that you can do things with Venom that you can’t do with Spider-Man. Venom is the representation of every line that will get crossed. He’s a much darker character." Interestingly, he actually believes that Sony have a head start on Marvel and their Cinematice Universe  because of the franchise's history. "You know, Spider-Man has the benefit of having so many more movies than even some of the movies that have 2′s and 3′s in front of them from Marvel." His advice for whoever works on The Amazing Spider-Man 3? "I think as long as it keeps staying true to character, and true to who Peter is, and putting him in interesting and complicated situations, it’ll survive. Because it’s so beloved – everybody loves Spider-Man." Well, yeah, we all loved him until you came along Alex...

This isn't going to be a pretty thread. Of course people will take the "You know, Spider-Man has the benefit of having so many more movies than even some of the movies that have 2′s and 3′s in front of them from Marvel." to a whole different level.

I'm looking forward to Venom/Carnage, Sinister Six and TASM3 however I do want them to pay specific attention to the negative feedback they received from TASM2. Though it was a decent profitable film some folks here have said that Sony was expecting more in return (financially) from the sequel. I'm glad they pushed the date for TASM3 to 2018 however I do hope that there's "reasoning" for it and not just to stall around until Kurtzman is free again. There can be good and bad things found within the screenplay/script but if Kurtzman isn't willing to elevate his skills for the next installment I fear we'll see more of the same.

He may be a bad writer, but he's probably a more likable person than his scumbag, 9/11 truther, partner-in-crime Roberto Orci.

Oh...so he's talking about a solo Venom film. I thought he was talking about making him the antagonist in Amazing Spiderman 3. Hmm...perhaps from now on I should read the article....stay with me now....read the article AND THEN comment.

I agree that the TASM movies have flaws, but in relation to Peter Parker I have a different opinion. These movies are clearly influenced more by the Ultimate universe than the 616 one. So obviously if you are a fan of the classic Peter Parker that is not exactly what you are going to get. They are trying a modern approach of the character, like what the ultimate universe did and the animated tv series is doing now. Andrew Garfield in my opinion was a really good cast and is a more entertaining Spider-Man than Tobey Maguire. Peter Parker is far from being the biggest issue with these movies.

Bring back Raimi and remove studio approval/involvement. In fact if Sony wants to make a profit on the Spider-man property I bet Disney has some cash to spare...

I think Venom may end up coming in 2018 along with TASM3.

Was there any truth to those reports stating that Garfield extended his contract for a multimillion dollar deal? I remember they said the films would go up to 2020 or something like that?

I find it hilarious that these idiots at Sony believe that their redundant, half-assed attempt at a Spider-Man cinematic universe is better than the MCU in every way.

At least Marvel is making movies on characters people actually want to see. Can't say the same about Sinister Six.

Looking at the bright side, in case this project actually gets the green light, we are going to get a movie that probably we would never get if the rights of Spider-Man were with Marvel. But again, I would rather have him in the MCU where he could crossover with the Avengers.

To be honest, in terms of personality traits and characterizations, I believe TASM franchise has it locked down. Like spidey's playful personality.

If they wanted to do something cool, Sony would make an Agent Venom movie.... But, they won't do that, because it's Sony.

I'd rather the rights be back at Marvel.
