Andrew Garfield Describes Spider-Man Role As "A True Honor"!

The actor once again pointed out that he's been a fan of the character since childhood and said that the main things which appeal to him are, "his youth, his relatability, his struggle. He was just this skinny boy. He was a skinny boy who felt stronger on the inside than he looked on the outside, and I related to it immediately, and it stayed with me as I grew up."

"Every single generation of the comic, the cartoons and the movies, it all means a great deal to me," he added about what it is exactly that he finds so appealing about Peter Parker. "It was always something that gave me hope as a skinny little kid whose sense of injustice about the world didn't match his sense of strength about his body. I found it so inspiring and uplifting and reassuring. To be a part of that mythology and that legacy is a true honor."

As for the training regimen he's going to have to go through to convince the audience that he really does have the abilities of the wall crawling superhero, Garfield said: "We're just talking about where we want to go with it and what kind of body shape it should be. What the skill set should be. I know I'm going to be doing a lot of flexibility training and a lot of strength training, because I have to swing and stuff. I'm just guessing, but it's all kind of early stages."

"I'm not
doing it for any of the peripheral stuff. We could be making a short film, a short Spider-Man film with an unknown director, with no money, and I'd do it just to be able to play as Spider-Man,"
he explained when asked about his passion for this movie. "That's like a childhood fantasy come to life. It's an adult fantasy, as well. I'm still climbing up the door frames in my house. It's just a bigger space I'm going to be climbing in now, with a bit more money behind it, and the cameras filming it."

His co-star in Never Let Me Go, British actress Carey Mulligan, had this to say about her fellow Brit getting such a big role: "Those big superhero films or comic films only ever work when the actors are completely truthful. If they go in with a stylized, comic book version of the performance, it's not going to work. But I know that Andrew will play the truth of what it's like to be that man in that situation. I think it'll be like what Heath Ledger did with the Joker. Andrew, he has no other way of working other than doing things with complete truth."

The currently untitled Spider-Man will be directed by Marc Webb and opens in 3D and 2D theaters on July 3, 2012.

Yeah, I'm cool with a reboot

Raimi's movies were on the steady decline since halfway thru Spider-Man 2. They were never gonna get any better, and were fastly approaching Batman & Robin status if 4 was allowed to be made. So reboot the shit, fk a 4th Raimi, and let's see what happens.

I do have to agree with grif a bit though. There's not much "new" to this news story.

Nope, not a huge amount of new information guys...either interviewers these days arent that imaginitive or Garfield can only say enough about the movie at this point that he's having to repeat himself. Either way, he does go into a bit more detail on the training, why he cares for the character and the fact that one of his co-star's compared him to Heath Ledger makes for an interesting talking point IMO so I think it was worth posting. :)

Another good find Josh.
I hope we start seeing new stuff in the next little while, production art, set pieces, costume design. Anything to give us a taste for the new movie.

I still have faith that this reboot will be a more definitive version of Spidey. Looking forward to it for sure.

I'm glad he loves the character, really i am. But its almost getting to be too much for me now. We get it, you like Spiderman. He's almost overdoing it. If he keeps expressing his love for the character and the movie and his performance totally suck, he'll look like a big fat lier.

I say yes to the reboot, but until it gets more underway, i've heard enough news about how excited Garfield is.

Thanks guys! :)

Personally, I'm feeling pretty good about this reboot. Right now that's mainly down to the fact Andrew Garfield seems so perfect for the role and is clearly passionate about it. However, until I hear from Marc Webb about the tone and characters we'll see in this film, I cant get too optimistic...after all, you can have a great cast but the wrong director/writer can still end up making a crap movie!

I just hope they end up moving away from the whole high school idea and set this in college...they could even skip all that and pick up with Peter once he graduates and is already in a relationship with Gwen and friends with Flash, Harry etc. Either way, I'm looking forward to them hopefully improving upon the few things I didnt like in Raimi's movies.

Andrew Garfield is at heart, as much Peter Parker as Robert Downy is Tony Stark.

Also, its happening guys; grow up, move on. You can say [frick] the reboot as many times as you want but its not going to change anything.

LuL Always look on the bright side of life fellas.

@ Josh

I thought I read awhile back that they comfirmed only showing him/them in high school only for a small bit of the movie, then right on to college.

I think it was prob. an article here on CBM, that's where I get most of my CBM news these days.

Just one question here. I know Garfield dressed up as Spidey as a kid and I know he says"..."Every single generation of the comic, the cartoons and the movies, it all means a great deal to me."

But has he actually ever said he read any comics? I realize that does not matter for an actor all that much but I cannot help but wonder.

It's cool that he's passionate and all but I'm convinced.

@josh: thanks for updating but I think you should post when there is new news from Webb or if Garfield mentions an actual plot detail. They don't ask Webb because he is probably too busy doing preproduction stuff AS WE SPEAK.

@Ryden: yeah i'm all for opinions and all that but it's getting old.

Not sure about that, but if he hasn't he better get crackin. I don't know that Tobey was ever an avid comic reader either, but he said about the same thing when he was cast. It's pretty much standard fare.

i think 4 this one they should move away from the high school thing too... because that should be done in the MCU! if he just did an adult spidey that was good then maybe the reboot could be good... still sony will probably ruin it... poor spidey...

Wow, people are actually complaining that Garfield says he loves the character so much? Even after people make such a big deal about the actors being fans of the characters and how it's so important?

I have a gut feeling that Garfield is going to turn out to be one of the best superhero castings ever.

I don't think it's anything against Garfield in particular, just that they don't want the property rebooted...

I have difficulty with a guy who is going to be one year short of 30 when this movie will be released playing a high school Spidey. I don't think he looks THAT young. We will see another reboot way to soon. I wish they would have cast someone younger. If they aren't going to focus on villains much in this movie, then it is all the longer we have to wait to see the villains we were hoping to get in the continuation. Meh... to the reboot.

Adult fantasy, eh? Climbing up door frames with a sexy lady's pizza. Bigger space? Be the package guy and fill in her empty void.

"It was always something that gave me hope as a skinny little kid whose sense of injustice about the world didn't match his sense of strength about his body."

After this kid is done butchering Spiderman, they'll be calling him Peter "Put-it-in-me" Parker.

I for one embrace the idea of rebooting Spider-Man. Garfield has a great attitude, and I'm hoping that he really brings Peter Parker to life the way he SHOULD be. I'm also holding out hope that we get the funny wise-cracking Spider-man that's been my favorite superhero since I was a little kid. My only gripe here, and it's a small one, is that this guy is just too old to play a high-school age Parker. Make Parker college-age, and we're in business.
