BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Set To Drop To #2 After Only One Week At #1

Mixed reviews and a so-so B+ CinemaScore have seemingly made a big dent in the box office success of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 domestically, with Seth Rogen/Zac Efron comedy Neighbors set to cause a major upset this coming weekend by stealing the top spot from Sony's sequel...

As if it wasn't already embarrassing enough that Sony's biggest (and only) superhero franchise couldn't beat Captain America: The Winter Soldier's weekend opening, weak word of mouth looks set to knock The Amazing Spider-Man 2 from the top spot after just a single week. It was obvious that it likely wouldn't beat Godzilla two weeks after opening, but to drop so quickly - and to a comedy - is not exactly a good sign! With a projected $35 - $40 million debut likely for Neighbors, a 60+% drop means that the Marc Webb helmed sequel looks set to fall short and finish next weekend at #2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 brought in only $5.1 million at the box office yesterday, the lowest first Monday haul in the entire franchise's five picture history. There IS still a chance it will finish at #1, so we're going to have to wait and see, but don't count on it. Internationally, the movie continues to perform well (its spent three weeks at the top of the UK box office for example), but this and the tepid reviews could lead to Sony re-evaluating their Spider-Man plans...

Josh, why don't you go back to bashing Pacific Rim? At least I can kinda get behind that...
I mean, the only good thing about that movie was the action. The rest: really bad.

You can always count on Josh to desperately want to prove himself I right. I respect his opinion and all, but it gets pretty annoying after a while.

There is not greater irony than calling DC groupies fans of any Marvel movies. That's like right up there when Fahrenheit 451 was banned.

I thought it was a great film. I really don't see what the big gripe is on here honestly. I think it's the best spider-man film since SM2. This movie was a lot of fun. [frick] the reviews.... go see it for yourself. Why trust someone elses judgement?

You're damn right they don't. And since when is a B+ "so-so"? I consider that pretty solid! That's Mr. Josh Wilding for you.

We all know that the Spider-Man franchise has seen diminishing returns from the US since Spider-Man 1 right? Just an interesting point.
