SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Passes $100 Million in China, Closes in on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2's Final Total

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Passes $100 Million in China, Closes in on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2's Final Total

Following a rather drastic drop on Friday in China, Spider-Man: Homecoming has surpassed one hundred million dollars in the region and closes in on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's final worldwide gross.

While the big story of the weekend is War for the Planet of the Apes' record-breaking opening in China for a 20th Century Fox film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, despite a massive loss of theaters, still managed to pass $100 million in the country's market. As a result, Spider-Man: Homecoming currently sits at just over $861 million globally. This puts the movie just shy of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's final total of just over $863 million globally.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is still the lowest-grossing domestic superhero film of the summer, coming in below Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the current domestic champion, Wonder Woman. However, despite this relatively weak performance, Spider-Man: Homecoming should pass Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice's domestic total by the end of the week, as it is just shy by a little over a hundred thousand dollars from crossing that marker.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is expected to easily pass Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to become the year's biggest comic book film to date. However, with two more films on the horizon that fit within that genre, we'll see how long Spider-Man: Homecoming will retain that title. What do you guys think? Are you excited to see Spider-Man: Homecoming become the number one comic book film of the year? Are you more excited for what Thor: Ragnarok and Justice League have in store? It was only a matter of time. The question is if JL or Thor3 will pass Spidey, or if he'll be the global box office champ this year...

@MediaMan - global box office champ this year is going to be Star Wars, as last year was Rogue 1 and year before that force awakens

Despite this, Spider-Man: Homecoming still is the lowest-grossing domestic superhero film of the year

It's not ! Logan is the lowest domestic as well as worldwide CBM of the year.

It seems people have already forget about it.

@Jazzy4 - To the general audience, Logan is a forgettable film. I'd agree with you 100 percent there. Us die hard fans don't forget so easily. But, Logan is weird.

Beneath the novelty of its vulgar humor, “Deadpool” is simply another superhero origin story. Likewise, beneath the novelty of its blood and gore, “Logan” is simply another “gritty & grounded” comic book film.

The difference between the two is that I actually like “Logan” more because it doesn’t use the R rating as a crutch and it's just a BETTER film.

@BlackBeltJones - I disagree we should box office to determine how forgettable a film is. For instance blade runner, shawshank redemption were flops, but are considered masterpieces.

Also i disagree with your assessment of deadpool, deadpool was more a parody of superhero origin films, and this point, what wouldn't be a generic origin.

@BillGrave - I don't think box office makes Logan forgettable to the GA. I just think the film is in general to them. My parents for example, saw it, thought it was okay, but they couldn't tell you way thwir fave scene was. Neither could my one roommate. Not to speak for every GA member but, its sad that my folks like my parents remember more from Fast 8. Logan is a great film nevertheless.

Deadpool is a parody I agree. But here’s what I keep coming back to – didn’t Kick-Ass already do this?

The film centered around a young boy named Dave who decides to emulate the heroes he reads in comic books by dressing up as a superhero to fight local crime. Before he knows it, Dave is tangled up in a battle against an evil business tycoon and is teaming up with an established vigilante, Big Daddy, and his daughter/side-kick-in-training Hit-Girl. Kick-Ass was relentless in its violence, liberal with its foul language and heavy with homages to comic book tropes and subtle jibes at previous comic book adaptations. It was brilliant, hilarious and beautifully shocking. It never took an easy road out, and always surprised its audience.

Deadpool did all of this but benefited from amazing marketing, a recognizable lead, and being tied (albeit loosely) to the X-Men universe. It's almost a retread of what Kick Ass did as a criticism and parody of superhero movies but woth different mythology. Kick Ass even spoke to his audience to an extent.

It's just my take obviously. I enjoyed Deadpool, really. It's fun.

I'm looking forward to Deadpool 2 purely for seeing Wade play off of Cable and Domino which should at least be fun and new.

@BlackBeltJones - Well i dont think every film should be "already did this" if every film had to be comeplelty original one after the other then there screwed.

And kickass was more of a parody of superheroes as a whole. There powers, there killing, even sidekicks.

@BlackBeltJones - Also i would say all my friends remembered the scenes from logan, but i agree i cant speak for everyone.

Also they dont live on planet earth.

@BillGrave - In terms of the specific concept and commentary Deadpool was fixated on delivering, I just feel that aspect was already done by Kick Ass. That's not to say every film should be UNCONDITIONALLY original though.

My issue is that Deadpool is often viewed by many as a pioneer in terms of being a humorous satire on the superhero. I think Kick Ass did it first and did it well. Deadpool did a fine job too but it happened to do it during an era where oversaturation is always being tossed around and a lot of cbms are perceived as being too similar.

Kick Ass dropped when the MCU was 2 years old, TDK was 2 years old as well and really the only thing DC was pushing out, and superhero films in general weren't as common as they are now. Deadpool looks SUPEREMELY unique in a pool of fellow cbms that are sometimes too alike and look as if they're coming off of a factory line.

Awesome!

I'm so glad that people are still amped to see more Spider-Man despite how many times they may have did the character and his villain gallery injustice in the past. I honestly can't wait for the sequel. I just wish that Sony would cut the cord on those villain spin-offs. Or at least stay in line with Marvel and have Spidey's world expand on their end. I just hope that the use of their characters in their films won't restrict marvel from using those same exact characters.

Actually, the lowest grossing domestic superhero film this year is Power Rangers. Come to think of it, it's also the lowest grossing worldwide.
