Michael Keaton will be making a long-awaited return to the world of comic book movies when he portrays the villainous
Vulture in
Spider-Man: Homecoming next year. Keaton is well-known for not liking a lot of attention, so it was exciting for fans to see the actor accept such a high-profile, superhero-related role so long after his turn as the very first cinematic
Batman in 1989.
In an interview with
Deadline about his role as Ray Kroc in
The Founder, Keaton analyzed how the landscape of superhero films has changed since his time as the Dark Knight, which led to a quick discussion about working on the Marvel film.
"I have thought about the way things have changed, because I just did Spider-Man, and Marvel? That is one well-oiled machine. It is remarkable how they have got that whole thing covered in a really qualitative way."
Asked to elaborate on his statement, Keaton explained that he enjoyed the organization of the the studio, along with being surrounded by great actors, just like his time working with Tim Burton on
Batman. "Just how efficient it is, in the best sense, and how it operates on a practical level. How organized they are about what they make and how conscientious they are about what they have. They’ve got really wonderful actors for one thing, but I guess that has always been the case. Batman always had great actors surrounding that character. We had Pat Hingle and all these terrific actors. They really get that script is important, and they really protect their lore and that culture and they see the enormity of it, on a capitalistic level."
Keaton also had praise for star Tom Holland, though he admitted he had not watched any previous Marvel films, and that he doesn't watch the films he stars in.
"A great kid, by the way. [Setting up future films] doesn’t sound easy to do. I haven’t seen any of those movies, though. I just haven’t. It’s not a judgment."
Keaton will soar onto screens as The Vulture when
Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theatres
July 7, 2017.
