Joel Edgerton Reveals Which MCU Character He Nearly Played; Jennifer Connelly Talks Possible SPIDER-MAN Return

Marvel Studios' hunt for Star-Lord didn't result in quite as much attention as some other MCU roles. However, the decision to enlist Chris Pratt as the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise's lead generated a lot of discussion among fans.

It didn't take him long to prove James Gunn had made a perfect choice by choosing him to play Star-Lord. However, in an interview with The Playlist, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Dark Matter star Joel Edgerton has left us wondering "What If...?" by revealing he also auditioned to play Peter Quill.

"Star-Lord’s a good one, actually, because I, unlike Chris [Pratt], didn’t quite sort of understand the tone of it the way he did and the way that those guys did," the actor explained. "And I wasn’t really sure how I could be a part of that tone. And I truly think that the world is a much better place that I’m not Star-Lord, even if I had the opportunity or I did a good enough audition because it is the way it’s meant to be."

"And there was never a real conversation that it would have definitely been me. It was just, I had the opportunity to try and audition," Edgerton continued. "I just didn’t quite understand it."

It is a little difficult to imagine Edgerton as Star-Lord, especially now Pratt has made the character his own.

Many of you will have likely clicked on this article thinking we've made a mistake by mentioning Spider-Man in regards to Jennifer Connelly. After all, she's arguably known best to comic book fans for playing Betty Ross in 2003's Hulk

However, what you might have forgotten is that Connelly voiced Karen, the voice inside the wall-crawler's suit in 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. We didn't see Karen again after that, but the actress says she's open to returning to the MCU if asked.

"I would absolutely work with them," she told the site. "I think that they make great films and my husband has had such a fantastic time working with all of them and they have such a great group of actors working with them. I would absolutely do it."

At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker ditched the Stark Tech and made his own suit, so we wouldn't bank on hearing Karen's voice again. As for Edgerton, it's unclear whether he'd be interested in another superhero role, but there are lots of options out there for him.

Let us know your thoughts on these remarks from Edgerton and Connelly in the comments section.

I know that giving Peter's suit an A.I. voice was divisive, but I thought it was a decent way to adapt the comic thing of Spidey talking to himself, without him actually talking to himself (something that works much better on a page or even in animation than with live-action) and it's kinda weird how the sequels just ignored it without even a throwaway line.

@FinnishDude - I fear that the classic, all alone Spider-man is dead. Now it's a race of spider people and side kicks and madames. May as well make Pete a rich kid with parents

@FinnishDude - I always assumed that Tony got rid of it after he gave him the suit back at the end of HC but you are right , it is odd now that I think about it…

Wish there was a mention of it atleast but if I remember correctly , Peter rarely wore that suit if at all after IW.

@FinnishDude - I'll forever love that Jennifer Connelly voices Karen and her husband voiced Jarvis. It's so inconsequential, but it's just a lovely coincidental fun fact.

@IAmAHoot - don’t think it was a coincidence lol

@TheVisionary25 - The casting wasn't coincidental, but for those who don't know the connection (which is the majority), it's a fun coincidental tidbit.

Yeah , I don’t see Edgerton as Star Lord so ultimately it did work out for the best imo as Pratt did well in the role…

I could see Joel as an older Hank McCoy/Beast but the dudes already almost 50 so I doubt that will happen.

Connelly did well as KAREN in HC but it would be nice to see her in person for a Marvel role (not sure who though)…

Anyway looking forward to checking out their show , looks interesting and has certainly come out at an appropriate time in pop culture given the material it deals with…

He's a great actor, but Pratt was absolutely the lightning-in-a-bottle choice to fill that role. I just can't help but find it funny that he was still in kind of chubby shape when he was offered the role, and asked how long he would need to get back into Zero Dark Thirty shape.

Not so funny when they did it to Thor though.

@IAmAHoot - given that version of Star Lord ,Pratt was definitely the right fit.

Well, Star-Lord is kind of an idiot... And that's just me, but I feel the same way about Pratt. So they nailed it.

I've been wanting Jennifer Connelly to play a physical role in the MCU for years. The idea of her acting across from her husband, Paul Bettany, would be fun. So, I've been an advocate for her playing a role in Vision Quest (if that is still happening). She could either play Virginia, Vision's wife in the comics, or Marvel Studios could adapt Jocasta in that aeries so Jennifer could be a superhero in her own right and possibly continue for future MCU projects.
