If you watched Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in theaters this weekend, chances are you might have struggled to understand at least some of the sequel's dialogue.

Social media is full of complaints about the score drowning out what the characters are saying, with the prologue revolving around Spider-Gwen proving particularly difficult to follow. It's unclear whether the creative team tried a mix which hasn't translated well to theaters or if there are other issues at play, but writer and producer Phil Lord has now weighed in (via Toonado.com).

He seems to believe that the problem is with theaters themselves not playing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at the correct volume level. In fact, he's even created stickers to send out to projectionists, so fingers crossed that this problem is resolved in time for the blockbuster's second weekend in multiplexes.

"A contender for the best Spider-Man film yet and easily the greatest animated movie ever made," we said in our review"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a jaw-dropping spectacle, a feast for the senses, and an instant Marvel classic."

You can read Lord's comments in full in the Tweets below.

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn's full-time, friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence.

But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

The movie stars Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, Karan Soni, Jason Schwartzman, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Greta Lee, Rachel Dratch, Jorma Taccone, Shea Whigham, and Oscar Isaac.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.

I noticed it seemed a bit quiet too but didn't think much of it after the fact. Interesting to see this.

I haven’t seen it yet, but if the complaint is that the score drowns out dialogue (I had this issue with Blade Runner: 2046 and Dune), turning up the volume in the theater will fix nothing.

I actually left my theater and picked another showtime because I thought the theater had the volume low so I said [frick] this I’m going to a different room lol

I actually went and talked to a manager about it right away because I couldn't hear over someone crunching on their popcorn. They fixed it right away and the movie was enjoyable. Weird to know that it wasnt just my theater.

Are projections still a thing? Isn't that entirely automated now?

@Drace24 - Digital projectors are a thing...have you never looked to the back of the theater? Or do you think cinemas use 50ft tv screens to show movies?

@Himura - I'm not talking projectors, I'm talking projectionists. When I turn my head to the back of the room there is a big wall with a tiny window with a bright light. I haven't seen people there in decades and I would surprisded if that wasn't one of the first jobs to be replaced by digital automation.

The first third had really low dialogue, compared to the score at my screening. This wasn't an issue for me, after Miles and Gwen reunited in Brooklyn. Everything after their swing through the city seemed mixed well from that point on.

Some older lady was complaining about how loud the audio in theater was and it was imax surround sound. I laughed at the lady.

I couldn't hear a damn thing so I complained to the manager and he asked to see my ticket stub and I told him that I didn't have a ticket stub because I didn't buy a ticket and was just standing outside the theater trying to hear the movie so he had security escort me out. I'm thinking that next time I'll probably have a better experience if I take out a small personal loan, buy a ticket, and actually watch the movie from INSIDE the theater.

I definitely noticed that it seemed quiet when the movie started. Seemed like it was fixed later on, but man, Hobie was hard to understand sometimes and it wasn’t just the accent.

Opening night I went to a Galaxy Theater with DFX and the audio was perfect. Went to see it at AMC IMAX a few days later and the audio dialogue in the beginning was definitely off.

I’m from Brazil and watched it over the weekend on IMAX. Perfect soundtrack and sound effects levels, but the sound mix of the dialogue was very different — some of Gwen’s dialogue at the beginning was coming from the far back, some from the sides, and some were low, but I guess it was an artistic choice (since most of it was coming from inside her head).

Then saw it again yesterday on a Cinemark XD room and then all dialogue was right in front and the soundtrack was VERY low.
