James Vanderbilt Hired To Write Sequel To The Amazing Spider-Man!

Although the movie is still over a year away, it has today been revealed that Sony have hired the writer of The Amazing Spider-Man to pen a sequel in the new franchise! Hit the jump for details...

Columbia isn’t even done shooting The Amazing Spider-Man, its Spider-Man reboot, but it has already begun working on a sequel.

James Vanderbilt, who penned Amazing, will be back behind the keyboard for the continuation of the new movie franchise.

Vanderbilt had a meeting with the Spider-Man filmmakers and studio execs yesterday outlining his take, getting a thumbs up, and will now begin writing.

And here are a few more details from the site about the writer in case you're unfamiliar with his involvement in the past and current Spider-Man franchises.

Vanderbilt has become part of the Spider-Man family at Columbia, which has enjoyed great success with a tightknit group of creative people. Vanderbilt first worked on Spider-Man 4 for the studio, back when Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire were planning to continue the series. At the time, he was chosen for his character-driven approach to the story rather than a focus on special effects and worked on an outline for a trio of films.

When the project was reconfigured into a reboot, Vanderbilt was brought over to pen the new, character-focused version. (Alvin Sargent, also a member of the Columbia’s Spider-Man family, worked on the new script.)

With an all star cast that includes Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy, Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Sally Field as Aunt May, The Amazing Spider-Man is set to be released in 3D on July 3, 2012!

Sounds like they may have learned from SM3, hopefully.
I think they're starting too soon. I mean...we don't even have a logo for the movie and they're already planning a sequel? Wait a few months at least.

And so what happens in the off chance this first movie bombs?

I know it will make a pile of cash but again, not that interested in seeing it. I'll wait for a trailer to completely help me make up my mind.

If any of you can remember from just a little over a year ago, you'd know that the reboot is based on a two-film script treatment that Vanderbilt was hired to write just months before Raimi's Spidey 4 bottomed out.

So while it's definitely news that they're going forward with that second film, it's hardly surprising.

They gotta keep them rights don't they? lol. Oh well, I've enjoyed their Spider-Mans so far, and have high hopes for the new one. With today's CGI, I think Electro would be the shit! or Shocker.

Glad I'm not the only one who agrees. It has to be Tombstone and it has to be done right. Someone has to be behind the scenes controlling things, and other villains like Rhino. I'm tired of the Scientist gone wrong storyline.

Electro, Kraven, Shocker, Dr. Octopus, Green Goblin, Scorpion, Tombstone, Chameleon, The Enforcers, The Crime-Master, Silvermane, Morbius, Dr. Jonas Harrow, Don Fortunato, Dr. Mendel Stromm / The Robot-Master, Carrion, Rose, Hammerhead, The Jackal, Mysterio, Vulture, Venom, Carnage or Hobgoblin all the way!:)
Anyone of them would be Bullseye!

so many possibilities for villains
also, they could introduce the symbiote storyline at the end of the second movie(cliffhanger style) and have a proper Venom in the whole third movie, but that's just wishful thinking

I don't see why it HAS to be a trilogy, they can do more if they want. I want to see gwen stacy's death, all of you seem to have forgotten that, it has the potential to be one of the most powerful scene in CBM history. So dear Norman Osborn should be in the 3rd movie or 4th but gwen stacy has to die (ok that sounded wrong). Personally I think thats more important, but electro would definitely rule.

I have really high hopes for The Amazing Spider-Man. Been wanting a reboot after the 3rd one were everyone seemed too old, tired/dragged, and too kid-friendly. Not to mention the fact that they also ruined one of my fav. villains of all time, Venom.

I was hoping the reboot would be from MARVEL Studios though, but as long as this is on par with the 2 original films then I'm fine (I also dig the new suit but the sneakers, not so much)...

Electro, Kraven, Shocker, Dr. Octopus, Green Goblin, Scorpion, Tombstone, Rhino, Chameleon,Hammerhead, The Jackal, Mysterio, Vulture, Venom, Carnage or Hobgoblin would do. Hope for some new villains though perhaps Rhino and Scorpion.

@Darkmatter didn't say it had to be a trilogy, when ever they do it, I don't care long as it happens and long as they pull it off, one of the defining moments in spideys life.
CapFan79
CapFan79 - 3/24/2011, 3:13 PM
@Darkmatter I'm curious if Sony even has the rights to Mysterio. He was in Daredevil and Fox could have the rights like they do with Kingpin. I wouldn't mind if Mysterio is in DD just as long as he gets the movie treatment. He was the highlight of the Spider-mna 2 game!

CapFan79
CapFan79 - 3/24/2011, 3:17 PM
@sh4ko I hope they get a real (i.e. HOT and not Dunst) Mary Jane, but I've always liked Gwen, Betty or even Black Cat better as characters.
DBeck
DBeck - 3/24/2011, 3:17 PM
@capFan79 I'm pretty sure Sony has the rights to Mysterio because there was talk about Bruce Campbell being Quentin Beck back when Raimi was running the show. Plus he's more a Spidey villian. I wonder who has the rights to Hammerhead and Tombstone though, since apparently DD has the rights to Kingpin.

why the hell is brazilian batman smelling his own pits?
CapFan79
CapFan79 - 3/24/2011, 3:28 PM
@DBeck I guess it depends on when the rights were purchased. Mysterio was in Guardian Devil back in 1998.

I wonder if Sony and Fox can team up to produce a film. Could you image if they decided to team up for their own Marvel Universe films? Kingpin, Dr. Doom, Mysterio, Bullseye and Electro against Daredevil, Spider-Man with the new F4 and Wolverine! Lots of studios co-produce films together. I wonder....
tracydavis001
tracydavis001 - 3/24/2011, 3:30 PM
Mysterio would b cool, but bring on Kraven the Hunter!!!
CapFan79
CapFan79 - 3/24/2011, 3:42 PM
Kraven would be boring by himself. It'd be cool if he were in this reboot intending to hunt the Lizard and then goes after Spidey too since he's the bigger "prize". Maybe in a sequel he could hunt Vulture.

I do hope they do Dr. Octopus again too. Spider-Man 3 really soured the whole trilogy for me. Mostly because of Dunst. Sure, emo Peter, Venom and Harry Osborn weren't handled right, but it was the whiney a$$ Mary Jane that got me mad. I assumed that at the end of 2 that she realized what Peter was going through, but of course in 3 she's a bigger [female dog] and uglier too. Now I can't watch any of them without her pissing me off. No Mary Jane for the reboots!

"Vanderbilt first worked on Spider-Man 4 for the studio"

Yeah hes one of the guys that wrote shitty SM4 scripts that noone liked which lead to countless rewrites that eventually caused the film to be canceled, thanks Vanderbilt total faith in you!
