Kevin Feige Has Seen THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN; Gives His Verdict

It seems Marvel's head honcho has seen an unfinished cut of Marc Webb's Spidey reboot and absolutely despised it! Just kidding. Click to find out what he really thought..

Something that we missed from Collider's revealing interview with Kevin Feige last night, was that the Marvel Studios President has seen a cut of Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man. Now I realize directors/actors etc praising upcoming movies is nothing new, but bear in mind, although Spidey is a Marvel property and the studio does have some stake in the movie, TASM is a Sony production. So while it was unlikely that Feige would say anything negative if he didn't like it, it's a good sign that he found the movie "excellent"..

Q: First off, have you seen The Amazing Spider-Man? I know it’s not your movie.

Kevin Feige: Yes. It’s excellent. It’s not finished, but what I saw was very encouraging and very good. And the whole notion of [I hate that they] “reboot this, that” should go away when people actually see the movie.

Well there ya go, the first brief reaction to The Amazing Spider-Man, albeit from someone close enough to the production. Does this do anything to assuage any doubts you may have had? Or will you have to hear a lot more (and from a very different source) before changing your stance?

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

TAMS hits theaters July 3rd.

This in noway solidifies that TASM is a good movie, although I personaly think its a good move... A more realstic take where Spider-man actually cracks jokes not (Overpowered whiny cheesey soft Sam Raimi Spider-man)

This is reassuring. I am convinced it will turn out to be a great movie but I guess we will have to wait and see. Only time will tell. Hurry up summer, only two weeks from The Avengers !

This movie might be great, but Feige's endoresemnet holds about as much weight as Geoff Johns raving about Green Lantern...

@Marvel87- Avi Arad/Marvel had much more control over the Fox/Sony films than you think...

How is it Smallville Spiderman? Peter Parker started out as a high school student and has been that way in many different versions. It's not like they're doing a movie focused on his childhood from the elementary school days all the way up to the spider bite.

No he doesn't have to say anything..as prettynuclear points out he could have very easily just said he hadn't seen it, or that it was "coming along nicely" or something to that effect if he didn't like it.

Much rather hear it from the infamous Yahoo! crowd b4 ANY person close to the film.
SpiderMan6592
SpiderMan6592 - 4/13/2012, 6:58 AM
How is there a conflict of interest here? Kevin Feige has absolutely ZERO ties to The Amazing Spider-Man. He's not a producer. Not even a co-producer. The only tie he has to anything regarding the film is the fact that he's the Marvel Studios head and Spider-Man is a Marvel entity.

In fact, there's more motivation for him to say it sucked for Marvel absolutely wants its hands back on Spider-Man's film rights. There's zero conflict of interest, and while it's true, he probably wouldn't say anything negative to avoid conflict, he sure as hell didn't need to say it was "excellent". What could he have said you ask?

"It looks pretty good."

"It's not quite finished yet."

"It's coming along."

or quite simply

"No, I haven't seen it quite yet."

This is nothing like Clark Gregg saying The Avengers is great, because not only is Feige not an actor associated with the film, he has literally no fingerprints even on it.

Its hard for him to exude confidence about it be cause Marvel doesn't freaking own it and they want to!

So, the producer of Iron Man 1&2, TIH, Thor, Cap, and The Avengers says that TASM is a good movie. That's sure to get fanboys going.

This is going to be another year for Marvel! Marvel took the cake last year with Thor and Cap over Green Lantern, and it looks like The Avengers and Spider-Man will be awesome movies.

First he says it is excellent and then he says it is very encouraging. Seems like he isn't too certain on what he thinks. Sure it isn't the completed film, but he didn't sound overly convincing to me.

@just1superguy - It can't be the Smallville version of Spidey. Firstly it won't take years of crap drama before he learns then forgets to spin webs, secondly Andrew Garfield can act!

@CoolanTek: I don't think Raimi's Spider-man was overpowered. Stopping the train was pretty insane, but in the comics Spider-man does exhibit very rare, but incredible feats of strength, even for himself. He's held up very large portions of multi-story buildings before that have collapsed on him. There's a famous issue from the 60s (or 70s), it's old, where he's fighting Doc Ock in an underwater hide out. The structure collapses on him, pinning him under thousands and thousands of pounds worth of solid metal and the room begins to fill with water. Before he drowns, he's able to lift it up and escape. I don't know how much that weighed, but it's been implied that it was much greater than his typical 10 ton limit.

Anyway, I am looking forward to TASM. I hope that every now and then, Garfield's Spidey has a chance to display a rare feat of ridiculous strength. So long as it doesn't become a regular go-to schtick. But to see something like it once or twice in the entire series wouldn't be bad.

I feel so sorry for this film, no matter what it does, people will not accept it. I have seen people that have seen early versions of The Avengers that have said it was excellent and judging on the reaction at the premiere it is just that. Someone says The Amazing Spider-Man is excellent and you claim he has ulterior motives. Such double standards with you people !
