Loads Of New Details On Ultimate Spider-Man Animated Series!

Joe Kelly and Steven T. Seagle go into detail about the tone of the show, what it's been like to work alongside Brian Bendis, which characters might get a cameo and more on the kind of Spider-Man we can expect to see...

"It's fair to say that when we came on the project, Marvel looked at what worked in the past and what hasn't worked," Kelly told MTV News. "They felt like this would be a cartoon for a completely new generation, so let's tear it down and build from scratch and really exploit what animation allows us to do, not replicate what's done in the comics."

"We're hitting a lot of comedy. The action is really frenetic... and kinetic. It's like the technology has caught up with Spider-Man — sort of the same thing they said with the movies, where you can finally do the things you actually want to see him do."

"The building blocks are great," added Seagle. "It's a classic character for obvious reasons, so those pieces will still be in place. Peter Parker is the archetypal teenager. Those story beats don't ever change. The same things that were critical to teenagers then are critical to teenagers now. So a lot of our world is that world — focusing on what it's like to be young and have amazing powers and still try to save the world and go to school."

"Tonally, he's less of a whiner and more of a smart-aleck," Kelly said of Peter Parker. "He understands his responsibility, but he's willing to bust chops as he's moving through it. He's not intimidated with it, as he might have been portrayed in the past."

"Bendis has been great," said Seagle. "He understands that character so thoroughly and that world. All the new stuff and all the old stuff — he's great at synthesizing that and saying, 'This is how that would go.'"

"We all met together and got around the table with Joe Quesada and Jeph Loeb," Kelly said when asked about planning the series. "It's a real free-flow of ideas. Brian knows that stuff so well, it's Paul's first time ever writing Spider-Man, and us lifelong fans of Spidey, we're just throwing things at the wall and seeing what makes us laugh and what we enjoy."

"It would be very, very cool to see a Deadpool in this universe. I don't know if we could actually do it and actually be on TV, but... Spider-Man's rogues gallery is fantastic. There are characters we can and can not use, so it's a little tough. Personally, I love Moon Knight. I'd love to see a Moon Knight in it. I love Mysterio, he's always been a favorite of mine."

...THANK YOU

Also, Grif, man... Caaaaaaalm down buddy. Breath in, and out, breath in -- out. How you get "CGI" out of the word technology is beyond me, but thats beside my point. Animation isn't done the same as it was in 1950, its always evolving. Durp, over the last year animation technology has vastly improved and they were just voicing that they're taking full advantage that.

It will probably be a lot better than Spectacular Spiderman. That show had its moments but it was just to cheesy/lame to me in a lot of ways.

I did like it though; I think this will be an improvement.

Hmmm....we'll see. This show has a lot to live up to seeing how SSM had raised the bar for Spidey cartoons.

I love Mysterio too, But Spectacular Spider-Man was awesome, since they only use Ultimate as a base for Peter/Spidey and not for the villains, I´m ok with that, I dont wanna see HULKGOBLIN on that.

I do hope that this Ultimate Spider-Man animated series will take part in the same universe as Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. I'd love to see a few more crossovers like the good ol' days!

I am with Lucaxmen. I like the idea of them using the Ultimate Spider-man character. I just don't want them to use the Ultimate villains. I think the rogues gallery should stay classic.

@ grif. You know I love 2D animation a lot. But if they can make CGI like they did with the MTV spider-man I would be okay with that. The cell shading looked pretty good back in 2003. It could be like the 1994 series. They could have CGI buildings for the web swinging scenes. Then use standard 2D artwork for the rest. The only problem with that is sometimes having CG mixed with 2D can be very jarring for the viewer.

I think the main thing we should be focused on here is the writing. As long as it is Spider-man at his core. Who cares if it is CGI. It always falls back on the writing guys.

I'll give this show a chance because while I have ZERO desire to see any of the Ultimate characters make their way into live action, the first 40 odd issues were good enough that I'm intrigued to see an animated series. If I have one problem with any version of Spider-Man that Bendis writes, it's that he makes them too whiny, so it's good that they're going to get rid of that.

WittySupername: No worries bud - it takes a little longer, but I always like to include the text that goes with the video in case there's anyone who cant see it for whatever reason. :)

Can't wait to see more from this.

I'm hoping this is going to be great. If I remember right the IS Paul Dini of Batman TAS he's talking about so that right there is a bounus.

I know Bendis is involved, but I hope it's not too much off USM comic, but a mix if they're going to include the ultimate stuff.

This also had better improve on the lousy art style Spectacular had, we need a more realistic, less something a 5 year old would be drawn to. And, do not even come close to copying Bagley's artwork, it's crap.

"Tonally, he's less of a whiner and more of a smart-aleck," Kelly said of Peter Parker. "He understands his responsibility, but he's willing to bust chops as he's moving through it. He's not intimidated with it, as he might have been portrayed in the past." LOVE the sound of this! I hope Joe Kelly is also involved in the writing, he was one of the funniest writer's on AMS.

Now that Marvel has control of this, we should see cameos by other heroes, about time!

Great find Josh, thanks.

It still breaks my heart that Topher Grace wasn't cast as Spidey (instead of Tobey McGuire), his comedic timing was perfect for the web-slinger!

Hope this show rocks...

So help me if this new spidey series sucks.I will be EXTREMELY PISSED.Because that will mean they canceled Spectacular Spidey for no damn reason but to line their pockets.S.S was the best animated spidey series I have ever seen.It had everything I as a fan could have hoped for.If this show doesnt deliver I wont ever watch another spidey series.Because they canceled the best one that was ever made & billions of ppl were pissed, myself included.Because Disney decided to screw us over with & I seriously hope not watered downgraded version of the spectacular spidey.

Agree with Talontd...I think Topher Grace would have been really good as Peter. He has the Spider-man vibe more than Tobey did. I like Tobey, but I think Topher would have owned that role.

Also I have seen most of Spectacular Spider-man...I wasn't a fan of the art style either. I think they could have done better. Even though the show was good. I wish the character models were more "realistic". Like what Eviltwin said.

This sounds like it should be a good series. I've enjoyed a lot of the Ultimate Spider-Man books, because Bendis did "ultimate" right. It wasn't about finding the sleaziest and most depraved aspects of the characters and hyperamplifying that, as Millar did. It was about getting back to the basics of what made Spider-Man such an interesting character in the first place. Bendis also has proven quite adept at giving Spidey some great one-liners to torment his foes with. If this new series captures that feel, I'll really enjoy it. There is bad around too, though- PLEASE no "hulkgoblin"! I also hope we don't see the "drama queen" Peter we see a lot in USM. A less whiny Peter is a good thing!

Hoping this turns out good. Still not keen on the idea of having other superheroes appear, that's one of the things that got me a bit tired of the '90s animated show.

@comicb00kguy
Bendis working on this is definately going to be a plus!

@grif
I'm hoping it's not CGI either. That was one of the things that didn't get me into the MTV series.

Why do some of you think Spectacular Spider-Man was canceled for no reason? That series (amazing it was indeed) was developed and owned by Sony. But with Disney moving in, they brought the rights back to Marvel Animation.

I'm not worried about this show. I think that seeing how Spectacular Spider-Man was very well received by fans, they know what makes a good Spidey cartoon now. I'm just glad that it's 100% under the Marvel Animation umbrella, so there will be no more behind the scenes BS that will cost us the show.

I'm hoping they do the same for X-Men and take off from where W&X-Men left off.

When he says "Paul", does he by any chance mean "Paul Dini"? That would be AMAZING! He is one of (if not THE) best one shot storytellers in the comic universe...
