Is Dakota Johnson regretting signing up to star in Madame Web? According to a new report, the actress raised eyebrows in Hollywood by leaving her talent agency days after the first trailer debuted...

Variety recently shared a piece on the current state of Sony Pictures Marvel Universe plans and there's an interesting reveal in there which suggests Dakota Johnson may be unhappy with Madame Web

As the trade explains, "Johnson's conspicuous jump from WME to CAA in November - just days after a baffling first trailer debuted - raised industry eyebrows, along with a razz in her recent 'SNL' monologue describing the film as 'like if AI generated your boyfriend’s perfect movie.'"

They're making a big assumption there but the suggestion is clearly that the actress isn't fully behind the upcoming comic book movie. Jared Leto clearly couldn't care less when he was doing the rounds to promote Morbius, so Johnson may well feel the same.

Still, we can't help wondering whether this was a coincidence even if the timing is rather suspect. Then again, we're sure Johnson was made aware of the fact her big superhero debut had become the subject of ridicule thanks to the line, "He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died."

Reliable sources have informed us that this questionable piece of dialogue isn't included in the final cut of Madame Web, though whether Sony chose to scrap it in response to the memes or it was only ever meant to provide some story context in the trailer is unknown.

Both Johnson and Sydney Sweeney tagged Marvel Studios on social media when they were cast, leading to speculation Sony is using the old bait and switch with actors and allowing them to think they're joining the MCU rather than whatever they're calling their shared world these days.

Regardless, we'd bet the Fifty Shades of Grey star wasn't happy with being made fun of and that might go some way in explaining why she parted ways with the agents who convinced her to join the Marvel Comics adaptation. It should be interesting to see how she handles Madame Web's marketing campaign over the next couple of weeks, anyway!

As always, stay tuned for updates on Madame Web as we have them.

Meanwhile, in another universe...In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines.

The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present.

SJ Clarkson directs from a screenplay she wrote with Claire Parker. Morbius scribes Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless are also expected to be credited for their work on the script, though it's currently unclear which draft they wrote. The movie's confirmed cast members include Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.

Madame Web arrives in theaters worldwide on February 14.

Yeah, it's their fault she agreed to sign on.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - But her agent probably made her. That 50 shades of grey money is probably dried up by now. Prob wants a agency that doesn't expect her to sign on to crap movies.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - ...why would you not trust your agent when they give you a gig? The literal point of an agent is based on trusting they'll do the best they can for you.

If you don't trust your agent, it's just a guy speaking into the cloud.

@mastakilla39 @Origame - She should have dropped them the moment they wanted her to sign on to the movie connected to Morbius and Venom 2. The fact that she just now came to the conclusion that it was an awful idea after already making the movie makes her just as ignorant as her agency for suggesting it. Your agents get you jobs, but you should be able to trust your own instincts as well.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - ok, first of all, why do you think she'd know the reputation?

Second, you can literally say that about even marvel studios. Because venom 2 did better than the mcu movies it was up against during covid and morbius objectively lost less money than the marvels.

@harryba11zack - Anyone that joined the MCU during Phases 1-3 probably didn't mind.

But after during phases 4 and 5, I think they'll be glad when it's over.

When she made the joke in her snl monolog, I laughed too hard. She has moved on, for good measure.
So, who is he? Madame Web: Ezekiel Sims, he was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died.

There’s no way this film is good, especially considering that they supposedly gave it the full Morbius treatment by removing all Spider-Man connections, so yeah she’s probably regretting that she signed on.

No shade though - get that $$$ Dakota.

@VamP5659 - She's an overpaid person who plays pretend for a living. What's to feel sorry for?
VamP5659
VamP5659 - 1/30/2024, 3:18 PM
@PartyKiller - Omg ur so edgy saying celebs don't have feelings. Dude you're on a comic book movie news website, you're just as weird as the rest of us.

About Dakota, I just feel sorry that the 50 Shades legacy is following her even when she tries to break out into something new.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/30/2024, 3:34 PM
@VamP5659 - Strange thing for me, as was forced to watch both sets of films, actually felt she elevated the character from the total dog$#!t source material on 50 shades (only managed to read half the first and that was a struggle), still think the films are bad but...

...conversely the star of Twilight seemed to suck all the life out of that character (which are better books even if not that great in my view) and failed to bring across a fraction of the character well from the source and was carried a LOT by the characters/actors around her.

Yet look which has seemed to come out of not great trilogies with the bigger job offers it seems, Hollyweird is a strange place.
VamP5659
VamP5659 - 1/30/2024, 3:38 PM
@Apophis71 - Yeah that's actually an interesting way to look at it. Stewart and Pattinson ended up having much more successful careers then Johnson and Dornan despite the former being in an arguably lesser franchise. Am I happy for Rob and Kristen they got more work? Yes. Do I wish Dakota and Jamie (Dakota a bit more in this case) had that same success? Yes.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/30/2024, 3:48 PM
@VamP5659 - Pattinson deserved it, Kirsten went from one poor performance to another yet still kept getting work although I will give her credit more recently she has seemed a LOT better with her acting after she got her RL life in order more. Seemed she spent more time pretending to be someone she wasn't offscreen than she did on for a long time, still don't think she is a great actor but...
PartyKiller
PartyKiller - 1/30/2024, 6:04 PM
@VamP5659 - "She's an overpaid person who plays pretend for a living. What's to feel sorry for?"

Didn't call her a "celeb", didn't mention her "feelings". She plays pretend for a living. That is what actors do.

I didn't mention, but will now, that when she signed to do Madame Web, she signed to profit off sweatshop slaves who make the merchandise. The same damn thing every Marvel, DC, Star Wars actor does. Then they go preach their "morality" to the world.

But you...feel sorry for her? Just because we watch Hollywood content, does not mean we should put Hollywood on a pedestal and ignore what they truly are.

She's already made more money than your entire family has made the past 50 years. More money than all sweatshop slaves combined have ever made.

ModHaterSLADE
ModHaterSLADE - 1/30/2024, 3:47 PM
Could be any number of reasons, but wouldn't be surprised if it just boiled down to her agent not trying hard enough to convince her not to do a dogshit superhero flick that looks like it will probably give Elektra and Catwoman a run for their money.

foreverintheway - 1/30/2024, 3:54 PM
I keep seeing rumours that the stars of all the Sony-Spideyverse movies sign on thinking they are going to be in actual MCU movies. From Morbius all the way to Kraven
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/30/2024, 4:23 PM
@foreverintheway - Then the stars of all Sony movies are a bunch of morons alienated from reality with shitty agents. By know they should know how it works.
