Sydney Sweeney plays Spider-Woman in Sony Pictures' Madame Web, but the highly in-demand actress also has a very different kind of movie hitting theaters this weekend in religious horror flick, Immaculate.
You may have already heard that the ending is a massive shocker, but might not be aware of just how messed-up it really is.
Obviously, if you're planning on checking the movie out, best to stop reading now, as major spoilers follow from this point on.
The Euphoria breakout stars as Cecilia, a young woman of devout faith who is offered a new role at an illustrious Italian convent. When she arrives to the European countryside, the mask of her initially warm welcome soon slips to reveal dark and horrifying secrets.
After a series of gruesome deaths, Cecilia discovers that the convent's head priest/geneticist (don't ask) is attempting to bring about the second coming of Christ by impregnating some of the nuns using DNA from one of the nails that was supposedly used to secure Jesus to the cross.
Cecilia realizes that her "immaculate" conception is the result of one such experiment, and she ultimately loses her mind and escapes through the catacombs, leaving a trail of bloody bodies in her wake.
When she finally emerges, Cecilia gives birth, bites through her own umbilical cord, and... smashes the baby's head in with a rock.
Yeah. That...that happens.
The final shot of the movie is Cecilia manically screaming into the camera after obliterating what was most likely some kind of twisted abomination (we never actually see the child) that would probably have died anyway.
Some have interpreted Cecilia's actions as more of a "mercy kill," but it's still pretty dark stuff, we're sure you'll agree.
Jonathan Davino for Fifty-Fifty Films produced with Sweeney, alongside Middle Child Pictures’ David Bernad, who developed the project with the actress following their work together on The White Lotus. Teddy Schwarzman and Michael Heimler produced for Black Bear, which fully financed and represented the international sales rights. Black Bear’s John Friedberg and Christopher Casanova served as executive producers, alongside Will Greenfield.
Immaculate marks the second recent collaboration with Neon and Black Bear after Michael Mann’s Ferrari, which hit theaters Christmas Day. Neon’s 2024 slate also includes Sean Baker’s new romantic drama Anora and Pamela Adlon’s directorial debut, Babes, starring Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau.
Directed by Michael Mohan and written by Andrew Lobel, Immaculate also stars Alvaro Morte (Money Heist), Benedetta Porcaroli (Baby), and Dora Romano (The Hand of God).
The movie is set for a theatrical released on March 22. Do you plan on seeing this one on the big screen, or will you wait for streaming? Let us know in the comments section down below.
