It’s not a necessarily big surprise, really, considering what the stereotype of MTV says. When asked “What do you think about the big "Spider-Man" movie news?” the crowd responded as follows;
What do you think about the big "Spider-Man" movie news?
50% — Without Raimi and/or Maguire, there is no "Spider-Man" franchise!
32% — This is great news! Bring on the new "Spider-Man" franchise!
18% — They should've made "Spider-Man 4" with a new director and star, not reboot the franchise!
I’m not sure on the numbers that made up those percentages. For all I know it was relatives of the author. But with so many people wanting Raimi and Maguire to stay on board, you have to wonder just what movies these people were watching, and whether it was the same movies we watched.
I remember those movies. I was there when I watched them. And maybe the first two movies are being coloured by my hatred of the third movie and the emo-Peter Parker. But nothing can really put me past the fact that Toby Maguire is not, should never have been, and I’m glad he isn’t any more.
One of the readers over at MTV had the following to say;
why why why do they think they need to "reboot"? No one wants to see high school Spidey. Literally. No. One.
Actually, I would suggest that considering Spider-Man has spent a large majority of his life as a teenager, a whole lot of people would like to see a high school Spidey. Especially if in a few years, we get to see a college Spidey and then a married Spidey, or some progression like that. A reboot is giving the franchise a chance to go back to its roots.
In fact, a lot of people who actually took the time to comment on their votes were very hopeful that the reboot would put the focus on the love triangle between Mary-Jane Watson/Peter Parker/Gwen Stacey. Given the love that Hollywood has for over the top romance stories, I could also suggest this to be a given in a reboot, and you can envision their wanting to film the death of Gwen Stacy eventually.
So no, it seems that not all the readers over at MTV have become obsessed with the mediocre, but with 50% wanting Raimi and/or Maguire to stay on board, you have to wonder. The movies did well at the box office, sure, but I’m going to say again that you can have a good story and big action in the same movie. So put some effort into people, and make the Spider-Man movies good again!
