Netflix Acquires Streaming Rights To Sony's Slate Starting In 2022 With Movies Like MORBIUS And UNCHARTED

Sony Pictures has chosen to delay its entire slate rather than consider Digital/streaming releases, & starting in 2022, Netflix will be the exclusive home for the studio's slate following theatrical runs.

Unlike most major studios, Sony Pictures chose to delay its entire 2020 slate rather than sell movies off to streaming services or consider Digital debuts. It doesn't help that they don't have a streaming platform of their own, of course, but we now know that Netflix will become the exclusive destination for its entire slate from 2022 onwards.

Well, after they've played in theaters.

As The Hollywood Reporter reveals, Sony has signed a multi-year deal with the streaming giant which will see Netflix nab movies like Morbius, Uncharted, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 following their theatrical and home entertainment windows (that's around eighteen months, but could be shortened depending on how the pandemic continues to affect the movie business).

Interestingly, this deal will see Netflix commit to financing a number of movies from Sony Pictures, encompassing titles the studio intends to make strictly for streaming platforms. With The Defenders no longer part of the streamer, you can't help but wonder if this could include some Marvel content.

"At Sony Pictures, we produce some of the biggest blockbusters and the most creative, original films in the industry. This exciting agreement further demonstrates the importance of that content to our distribution partners as they grow their audiences and deliver the very best in entertainment," said Keith Le Goy, Sony's president of worldwide distribution, in a statement today.

Added Netflix film head Scott Stuber: "This not only allows us to bring their impressive slate of beloved film franchises and new IP to Netflix in the U.S., but it also establishes a new source of first-run films for Netflix movie lovers worldwide."

This is a big deal for Netflix, especially with most studios flocking to regain exclusive rights to their content for their own streaming services (like Peacock, Disney+, and HBO Max).

I guess this means that Homecoming and Far From Home won't be coming to Disney+ anytime soon.

I was wondering if this would ever happen, but good to see it’s confirmed. Especially with how big something Spiderverse benefitted from being on Netflix. Wonder if that means down the line they’ll put a good portion of their catalogue exclusively to Netflix in the long run

I don't think the future of films is with streaming though, nobody is going to subscribe to all these platforms to see all these different pieces of media as opposed to simply being a pirate when companies not only have emphasized 'profit above service' but also the business models of releases desperately trying to leech as much from the individual as possible.

The advent of streaming means any content uploaded to streaming is always easily accessible via other methods almost instantly after, cinema's at the very least provided a delay before release and high quality pirated stuff appear online, but that's not an issue anymore for most.

Eh, if I want to see a film I make a habit of seeing it at the cinema.

Once it is on streaming, I tend to just do a one off rental payment through Amazon, YouTube or something else if I really want to see it again.

In guessing Sony isn’t interested in a streaming service like everyone else. Could’ve easily seen them dropping a playstation branded service, probably tie it in with PS+ subscribers too

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Yeah, Sony gotta build up more IPs if they wanna start a streaming service, plus the streaming field is already filled up.

All this means is that unless Disney buys Sony, Spidy and his ENTIRE vast universe of characters will never actually “come home”

Such a shame, we’ll never see some amazing stories that intersect with a multitude of characters

Finally. I was getting kinda tired with every studio starting it's own streaming service, even when Netflix and Amazon Prime are out with a pretty big reach already.

At this point does anybody really care anymore about

Marvel Studios not having full control of Spiderman?

In the next 5 Years Marvel Studios will unleash all these new characters and more

Shang-Chi
Eternals
Moon Knight
Blade
Fantastic Four
Nova

@WakandaTech -
I'd rather see what Sony does with Spider-man than Marvel. Sony will give us new characters while Marvel is more interested in tying him in with the other superheroes to leech off Spider-man's popularity like a parasite.

As for the new characters the MCU plans to unleash? Not really invested in any of them so a lot will be skipped completely. Many feel a similar sense of loss of connection with the MCU after Endgame as the story effectively ended and nothing afterwards has really justified it continuing.

@Scarilian - Sony's batting average with Spider-Man is NOT good.

As for the MCU "effectively ending". Well, there was a pandemic that delayed everything. But WandaVision has since moved the story forward and FatWS is currently pushing it forward even more. So...yeah the train is still rolling.

@Scarilian - "Sony will give us new characters while Marvel is more interested in tying him in with the other superheroes to leech off Spider-man's popularity like a parasite."

Actually that's what Sony wanted Marvel to do, why else did they sign contracts that specifically state that there will be involvement from other MCU characters in each film? Sony wanted to tie Spider-man as close to the MCU as possible so that they could build him up and then have him generate hype for their other Marvel films.

@Scarilian - Sony is the parasite that leeches off of the MCU and you are blind if you don't see that.
