After months of anticipation, the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home did indeed leak last night. This isn't the first time this has happened prior to a Sony Pictures CinemaCon presentation (see: Venom), but whoever decided to share that footage online is going to be in serious hot water with the studio.
We're not going to be posting the unfinished, low-quality teaser here, but we know that many of you are anxious to learn more about the film.
With that in mind, we've rounded up some details about this footage to bring you a better idea of what to expect from Spider-Man: No Way Home before the official version is (hopefully) shared later today. We're not sure anything in a trailer can be considered a "spoiler," but there are definitely some big surprises here that we have a feeling will blow your minds.
Take a look below for our breakdown, and check back here for the HD trailer as soon as it's available!
6. Outed
Much of the trailer is devoted to the ramifications of Spider-Man's secret identity being revealed to the world. We see what appears to be both the immediate fallout (billboards in Times Square showing Peter Parker's face) and what comes next, including Peter Parker's classmates surrounding him as he attempts to walk through Midtown High's hallways.
The press appears to be having a field day with the news, speculating that Spidey has the ability to control women with his powers, but all Peter wants to do is escape from the constant attention.
Peter and MJ have an interesting conversation about the way he's lied to everyone about who he really is, though that's not a sentiment the young superhero appears to agree with. Beyond these hints, we don't really get much insight into how the world at large feels about Spider-Man, but he's not behind bars. Well, not yet, anyway...
5. In The Frame
Remember, Mysterio also framed Peter for his murder and the hero (who appears to be handcuffed) is getting interrogated about that in this trailer. He pleads innocents, but as the FBI agent interviewing him points out, the drones he says killed Quentin Beck were, in fact, his.
Ned and Aunt May are also shown in custody, and it's clear the web-slinger's double life has had major consequences for his loved ones.
We also see what looks like Peter heading to court, with yet another crowd watching on. If Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock is set to make his MCU return, then we're banking on these scenes being where the Man Without Fear steps up to defend the young superhero in the courtroom. Halloween rolls around, and the sight of a witch decoration inspires Peter to turn to an old friend for help.
4. Sanctum Sanctorum
The Sanctum Sanctorum appears to be in rough shape, with snow having covered the insides. This could be a result of The Hulk crashing through the roof in Avengers: Infinity War, though we're at a loss as to why that hasn't been repaired in the years following the events of that film.
The magical properties of the building could be to blame, while it's possible Strange has simply been busy with other things. Either way, it seems Spider-Man: No Way Home takes place at the same time as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as Wong looks to be heading off to that fight tournament (which we know will see him clash with the redesigned Abomination).
The snow indicates that we've moved from Fall to Winter, potentially confirming reports that the events of the threequel will play out over several months rather than days. Oh, and despite what we've seen in merchandise, Strange doesn't appear to have the Eye of Agamotto.
3. Putting The Genie Back In The Bottle
Peter heads to the Sanctum because he wants Doctor Strange's help in making the world forget that he's Spider-Man. The Sorcerer Supreme is surprisingly willing to help, and ignores Wong's warnings that the spell he's about to perform is too dangerous.
As the webbed warrior realises that the spell will also make Aunt May, MJ, and Ned forget his life as Spider-Man, Peter starts having doubts, and that seemingly causes things to go awry.
We don't know if that has something to do with what happened in Loki, but the Multiverse does get a mention. Spider-Man: No Way Home is expected to tie into that series and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so this could be the moment the Sorcerer Supreme realises that there are now countless alternate realities that his spell may have inadvertently tapped into.
2. Into The Spider-Verse
Due to unfinished VFX and the poor quality of the trailer, we can't say for sure what happens here, but there's some very trippyshots. After some colourful imagery, Spidey is shown falling through a New York that appears to be folding in on itself.
Strange and the wall-crawler also appear to be battling it out atop a train, but again, the VFX is too poor to say for sure. We do, however, see the Sorcerer Supreme cast Peter's Astral Form out of Spider-Man's body as he warns him of the danger of living two separate lives.
This could just be him warning the hero that having a secret identity is more dangerous than not, though we can't help but wonder if this exchange has more meaning than that. Either way, it's at this point things get really trippy for Spider-Man...
1. Familiar Faces Return
A huge bolt of electricity appears to hit the ground, while a familiar Pumpkin Bomb (one of the Green Goblin's from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man) blows up a number of cars on a freeway.
Clearly, these moments are meant to serve as a nod to Jamie Foxx's Electro and Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, but the biggest surprise is saved right for the end of the trailer. After Strange says, "Be careful what you wish for, Parker," we see some robotic tentacles and a figure we're sure you'll know: Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2!
"Hello, Peter." Spidey readies himself for action, and that's where we leave things...
