This year's Oscar nominees were announced yesterday, but Spider-Man: No Way Home - as expected - was snubbed by the Academy. Despite earning overwhelmingly positive reviews and saving theaters with record box office takings, the blockbuster wasn't deemed worthy of a "Best Picture" nod.
Andrew Garfield was nominated, albeit for his work in tick, tick...BOOM!, and The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the actor to get his thoughts on his "Best Actor" nod.
The interview is worth checking out, but while the trade had Garfield on the phone, they asked for his take on Spider-Man: No Way Home being overlooked. "I’m not able to comment on that, particularly," the Oscar nominee diplomatically responded. "I really love that movie and I really love Amy [Pascal] and Jon Watts and Kevin [Feige] and, obviously Tom [Holland], and Zendaya and Jacob [Batalon] and Tobey [Maguire] and all the cast."
"That movie has been a kind of juggernaut of proportions that I don’t think any of us really expected. I can only speak for myself and I just feel grateful to be a part of something that is keeping cinemas alive right now, keeping cinemas full, and helping in that regard and making sure that the live experience or the communal experience of going to the movies remains intact."
"It’s very, very cool to see audiences still deeply longing for the thing that I know that we’re all deeply longing for. I think Spider-Man is obviously one of those movies right now and that’s so cool, and I’m so, so grateful to be a part of that." We weren't exactly expecting Garfield to slate the Academy in the wake of his nomination, but he's clearly proud of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Some sort of fan vote has been hinted at by the Academy that will allow us to choose our favourite movie and movie moment during the ceremony. Perhaps that's where the wall-crawler's latest adventure will earn some recognition? Specific details on how that will work have yet to be revealed.
Do you think Spider-Man: No Way Home deserved a "Best Picture" nomination at the Oscars?
