Spider-Man: No Way Home ends with the world forgetting Peter Parker, including those he loves most. Despite finding MJ and Ned in the final few moments of the movie, the hero decides not to try and explain what happened or make them remember him, preferring to leave them in safety.
Now, Tom Holland and Zendaya have shared their thoughts on that heartbreaking ending. While it's possible Peter and MJ will find each other again one day, the wall-crawler is now on his own and Spider-Man, well, no one has any knowledge that the teenager is beneath that iconic mask.
"I actually hate we're in these interviews like, 'This movie's so fun!’" Zendaya tells Marvel.com. "I cried throughout the whole movie. And the first thing I said when we finished was, ‘This is awfully sad.’" Holland agrees, adding: "It’s brutal. It's tough. It's bittersweet. [Peter is] starting a new chapter. And he's cleared his name. He's free of all that stuff. The people that he loves are safe, and they're alive. It’s very sad, the ending."
Zendaya admits that she was hoping Peter and MJ would "go to college [together]," but Holland seems more at ease with how things wrapped up for Spider-Man. "I wanted them to have a happy ending. We're still here, we're feeling good. We're proud of the movie. It would have been so nice for them to go to college, and just swing off into the sunset. Unfortunately, this is the way it is."
Poor Peter has never really had much luck in the comic books or movies, but we can't help but wonder whether he and MJ will eventually be reunited. She certainly appeared to have some glimmer of recognition after their conversation in the donut shop, though it's possible Peter will meet someone like Felicia Hardy or Gwen Stacy, getting a new love interest in the process.
