Sony has a studio production arm which has nothing to do with its core businesses of consumer electronics and gaming. Sony bought what was Columbia Tri-Star Picture in 1989 for $3.4 billion. This entertainment operation has done poorly recently. Sony's fiscal year ends in March, and for the period, revenue for the group dropped 15% to $7.2 billion and operating income fell by 10% to $466 million. Sony is in trouble. It lost $3.1 billion in its latest fiscal year on revenue of $86.5 billion. Sony's gaming system group is under siege by Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT - News) and Nintendo. Its consumer electronics group faces an overwhelming challenge from Apple. The company's future prospects have been further damaged by the Japan earthquake and the hack of its large PlayStation Network. CEO Howard Stringer is under pressure to do something to increase the value of Sony's shares. The only valuable asset with which he can easily part is Columbia which would attract interest from a number of large media operations. Sony Entertainment will disappear with the sale of its assets.

marvel should just buy back spider-man & ghost rider,how cool would it be seeing parker/spidey trying to get photo's of the avengers in action.

suit: horrifyingly ugly and not close to the comics at all and no big spider on the back or big eyes!
being written by sony script writers: you have SM3 because of sony nuff said...
Do I need to go on?

whereas with marvel i'm sure they'll do it like TIH with the origin in the credits and do a truly amazing movie

@Otherwise Actually Stone's just a few years older than the comic version of Gwen, and she looks younger. And Garfield's a bit too old, I agree, but again, he looks younger than what he really is.
And big eyes just makes things worse, IMO. And we also have SM2 because of Sony, nuff said!

otherside- Well they do have SM3, but it's not like Iron Man 2 was a home run. I like the actors and the director involved. Plus, it seems like they're doing everything right like Gwen being his love interest, placing him in high school and capitalizing on his intelligence which includes the mechanical web-shooters. I'm waiting until I see footage until I'm absolutely sure though. If The Amazing Spider-Man is a home run, then Marvel should integrate it into their already existing universe.

Sony Pictures will be taking in money from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, MIB3, The Amazing Spider-Man, and a piece of Bond 23's box office before the end of 2012.

If they still don't make enough money to justify keeping the film branch, I'd be shocked.

Yea as much as I would LOVE Marvel to own Spidey & Ghost Rider, I think half of the people in this article are too enthusiastic about Disney/Marvel buying Sony. We shall see how this pans out first before there is any potential celebration.

Although now would be the PERFECT time for Sony's franchises to be bought up by a different studio such as Disney.

Men In Black is coming to its natural end so Disney could reboot the franchse with a new spin to it, the dying Ghost Rider "franchise" (if you can even call it that) badly needs a reboot by Marvel & Marvel could either continue on from the rebooted Amazing Spider-Man franchise (and I wouldnt be as angry about this reboot) or reboot it all over again

My idea for the future of the Ghostbusters franchise is let the original cast do one more movie as the main Ghostbusters who hand over the reins to new Ghostbusters at the end (before Sony Pictures fall apart) and then Disney could continue on the franchise with a bunch of new Ghostbusters

now correct me if Im wrong, does that mean (in a perfect world) Disney buys Sony Pictures, does that mean James Bond will partly be owned BY DISNEY! I mean wtf? lol And it means 007 could appear in a Marvel movie lol

now if only Fox would give up the F4 rights because there hasnt being any word on it for ages (Im not going to even mention X-Men, its a renewed cash cow for Fox and there is actual work going into the Daredevil reboot)

James Cameron is probably too expensive for Marvel, not to mention 20th Century Fox probably has a hold on him. 2014 would be a projected date for 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' and by then he would be working on his Avatar sequels. He'd make a fine flick with Marvel Studios though, too bad...

Don't doubt Spiderman2o29, he has been right about these things many times before. Plus, Spidey is the only hero that Cameron is interested in so I'm sure he'd jump at the chance. That is, if the Avatar sequels aren't taking up his time of course.

I've heard a lot of rumors about how the new Spider-Man film is actually part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Sony is really going out of business, then it's possible that they may have sold the rights back to Disney/Marvel in order to stay afloat.

@Spiderman2o29 "Sony wont make that much with the amazing spider-man due to the MAIN fact that the dark knight rises comes out two weeks later and will take it down from the number one spot."

A new film taking 1st place, doesn't magically erase the amount of money a film can make in it's first two weeks.

Which could be over $250 million by day 14, if TASM makes nearly as much as the first three. (And that's just the domestic gross.)

yeah so the rights go back to marvel and we kiss goodbye to a doctor strange or black panther or any other unused character movie because marvel will then be making another spider-man or ghost rider. just brilliant cos none of us want to see their other characters brought to life.

We don't know what clauses are in their contracts for Spider-Man and Ghost Rider. Sony may not have the option to sell them to the highest bidder. They may HAVE to forfeit them to Marvel.

Spider-Man and Ghost Rider who they know WILL sell due to already being established and popular characters or Doctor Strange/Black Panther? who have never been done before? I believe they would focus on Spider-Man as he is the face of Marvel and an extremely popular character. They may be owned by disney but they haven't got unlimited amounts of money. Do you honestly think we'd get 3 or 4 Marvel films a year if Marvel Studios owned them all?
