SPIDER-HAM Among The Characters Sony Can't Use In Future SPIDER-MAN Movies

The "Sony Hack" scandal is showing no signs of slowing down, and now a spreadsheet has apparently found its way online full of the characters Sony are unable to use in future movies and those Marvel have "frozen" to keep off the big screen. Hit the jump for a selection of some of the best...

Business Insider have been searching through the various Sony files released online over the weekend by hackers, and claim to have come across spreadsheets revealing negotiations between Sony and Marvel over the rights to hundreds of characters from the Spider-Man corner of the comic book universe. As we already know, rights issues tend to be very complicated, and just because Sony can't use them doesn't necessarily mean that Marvel can. Hopefully the full list surfaces at some point as the site have prioritised many of the more humorous sounding characters on the list rather than those fans might one day hope to see as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Santa Claus Burglar made a single appearance in an '80s comic book, but he was still on a 2011 document titled "Disputed Characters List". Bag-Man, aka The Amazing Bag-Man, aka The Bombastic Bag-Man (Spider-Man in a Fantastic Four costume with a paper bag over his head) has been "frozen", something which seemingly means he can't be used by anyone. Also mentioned are Xandu the Unspeakable,Thermo the Thermatronic Man aka The Street StalkerThe Black Abbot (who Sony stated "We don't care about this character"), Agent 003 (another they have zero interest in), Mother Inferior, and Tordenkakerlakk aka The Thunder Cockroach.

However, perhaps most interesting is the mention of Spider-Ham a.k.a Peter Porker, a character some have speculated might have been the focus of the animated movie Sony want Phil Lord and Chris Miller to helm. According to the site, "Marvel informed Sony in 2011 that the character had been frozen." It appears as if he and some of the others mentioned here may not have been included in the original deal which saw Sony acquire the Spider-Man film rights, but being "frozen" likely means Marvel have no way to use him either. What do you guys think?

Sounds like we'll be getting Marvel's script notes advising Sony against a "dark" reboot (presumably the 2012 one) soon...

I'm pretty sure that all Spider-Hyphenated superheroes were part of that original deal, even if they aren't strictly Spider-Man support characters, but I would really like confirmation on that, Business Insider.

Search for: Jessica Drew, Julia Carpenter, Angelica Jones, and Anya Corazon. Use the search feature on those leaked email dumps...

You know... with googles.

I actually liked that aspect of TASM... even so...

I'm sure Sony is absolutely heart broken over the lose of Peter Porker. May he always be remembered.

@Spock0Clock Really? I thought Sony going dark with TASM was their biggest mistake haha. I have a feeling they thought the same too, because TASM 2 ended up doing a 180 by being as campy as an early 90's cbm.

Wait, you're telling me the Raimi movies were about Spider-MAN this whole time?!

I always assumed it was a super-realistic take on Spider-Ham! Why else would they hire Tobey Freakin' Maguire?!

JamesMan
JamesMan - 12/16/2014, 9:13 PM
I've always thought the greatest twist ending ever would be if in TASM3 the big villain is Tobey Maguire who's been trying to kill Andrew Garfield to become Spider-Man again.

@SauronsBANE

That's certainly the consensus now (and you're right about Sony's reaction), but I'm just giving my opinion. A dark, emotionally-driven Spider-Man movie series is not necessarily a bad thing (much of the comics, particularly late-70's through the 90's, has been immensely dark). And I really enjoyed the "punk kid from Queens" approach to Spidey in the car thief scene.

Much of the movie was hit-and-miss, and the sequel was a trainwreck, but that particular aspect of it worked for me. (Though I recognize I'm in something of a minority, here.)

It was a novel approach to the character, and I tend to overvalue novelty. That's why my dream Hulk movie is just a movie about Bruce Banner and whenever he hulks out, the screen just goes blank and we see him wake up in the aftermath. Just a personal quirk.

What about Jessica Drew?

One thing about the Sony hacks, we are learning stuff I don't think we would ever had known. I hadn't heard about 'frozen' characters that Marvel isn't allowing anyone to use. Although it might be just from the Spider-Man universe, I'm curious to what other names are on that list.

Screw these losers-- WHAT ABOUT JESSICA DREW?!?

I've been wanting to see Jessica Drew on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. since the show STARTED. She would be an amazing addition to the story, especially now that Hydra is a present force on the show. She's NEVER had any connection with the Spider-Man mythos...

MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

@Spock0Clock That's cool, you're certainly entitled to like that aspect of it. Just thought it was an interesting take on it, is all haha. For what it's worth, I don't think going dark was necessarily a bad thing in and of itself...it's just the way they handled and executed it that left a lot to be desired, IMO.

But different strokes and all that, it's all good!

Andrew Garfield is PERFECT as Spider-Man as long as he isn't given things for Peter Parker to weep over. He was great in the Comic Con panel last year.

@Inhuman
"Spider-Woman has nothing to do with Spider-Man so Marvel Studios can use Jessica Drew and the name Spider-Woman"

No one outside of Sony/Marvel knows what the original deal included (well, maybe Kim Jong Un knows and will soon be sharing). That original deal may have included Jessica Drew, Julia Carpenter, and even an agreement for Marvel to never use "Spider-Anything" in order to protect Sony's trademark.

I read pretty much everything publicly available about the Fox/Marvel deal (because a lawsuit brought aspects of it to the public sphere), and I was shocked at exactly how those deals are structured. As String said earlier, it's a constant learning experience whenever this stuff becomes public because you simply cannot assume from the outside who owns what.
