SPIDER-MAN 4: Marvel Studios Reportedly Sets Shooting Start Date - But Have They Found A Director Yet?

We have another big Spider-Man 4 update, this time regarding when shooting begins on the long-awaited No Way Home sequel and whether Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have managed to web up a director...

It's coming up to three years since Spider-Man: No Way Home was released. After delivering flops like Morbius and Madame Web, Sony Pictures is understandably keen to get its biggest money-maker back in theaters, and that may happen sooner than expected.

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, the current plan is for Spider-Man 4 to begin shooting in late September. With a smooth production and a quick enough turnaround, this could lead to the movie being with us as soon as next year.

For context, Spider-Man: Far From Home started shooting in July 2018 and was released to glowing reviews less than a year later.

The problem is, Spider-Man 4 doesn't currently have a director.

Richtman reiterates that no filmmaker is attached, but confirms Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have put an offer out to someone. Drew Goddard and Justin Lin are among the names supposedly in the mix for this next instalment, though there may be other contenders (especially as Goddard recently signed up to write and direct a Matrix reboot).

Plot details for Spider-Man 4 remain a closely guarded secret. We've heard Peter Parker might team up with Daredevil and Ant-Man to do battle with The Kingpin, though there's also been chatter about some sort of Multiverse component to the story involving Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men.

Either way, we expect this movie to set the stage for the web-slinger to be key a player in the upcoming Avengers movies (where he's expected to be a lead character).

"All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character," Holland said last November. "Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing."

"I feel very protective over Spider-Man," the actor continued. "I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character."

Stay tuned for updates as we have them. And, if you'd like to learn more about what was once planned for Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4, you can check out our recent interview with Dylan Baker in the player below.

The only way I would want a multiverse aspect is if they add an end credit of one or both the others sending a message warning that the multiverse is in danger (ie a Secret War warning in the same way we got a Infinity War warning befoe it occured). How/if they do that is another matter as to if they turn up on 616 or simply able to communicate the impending threat but the film itself should 100% be the friendly neighbourhood Spider-man ending up going up against Kingpin and whatever underlings he brings into the thing with him.

3.5% billion is asking too much for Spider-Man.

The last one made close to 2 billion, so I'd say 2 billion is the most you can hope for this next one. Beyond the Spider-verse will hit 1 billion maximum. That's revenue not profit.

After that, Marvel will probably leave them to fail on their own, so their live action movies will all be as bad as Venom or TASM2 at best and Madame Web or Morbius at worst. Instead of making money they will be actively losing money, which is what they're doing now with every SPUMC movie they put out.

So 3 billion would be a much more reasonable number, but I don't think Disney will go for that either, because it's a maximum overestimation of what Spider-Man would be worth to Sony. If Disney gave them $3 billion for Spidey, that would be quite generous of them.

I think $2 billion is too low. Sony would be better off keeping Spider-Man than giving him up for that much.

So I think that $2.5 billion, or somewhere between $2.5B and $3B would be the sweet spot.
If Sony are willing to take less than $3B, then Marvel finally get to do whatever they want with Spider-Man and can use Spider-Man and Spider-Man related characters in other projects (right now they feel restrained).

And most importantly: No More SPUMC!

@ObserverIO - There was talk that Sony wanted 8 billion for Spider-man, and Disney said no thank you. They probably counter offered with 4, and it was a lost cause after that.

@Timerider - 8 is ridiculous.

To Disney, it's worth way more than $8 billion, sure, but to Sony? They'll be lucky if they can squeeze another $3 billion before it becomes a negative IP for them.

Setting a release date without a director onboard sounds about right

I just hope Scorpion is the villain or one of the villains. I'm cool with Scorpion + Shocker with Daredevil as an assist when it comes to Kingpin and the film ending with the symbiote attaching to Peter.

I hope there’s a scene, perhaps a mid credit scene of Spider-man and the Human Torch, setting up The Fantastic Four. Maybe show a really long arm comes into view as Johnny and Peter discuss each other’s powers.

Wilding delusionally still throwing in Goddard. That was never ever happening.

Should've thrown Goddard the keys but that's likely not happening anymore since he's taken over Matrix. We're gonna get another indie director who's a puppet for these clueless producers. Shame

Cool, I need something that I can get behind a character that I like that Disney hasn't completely f*cked up.

@marvel72 -
The only reason they haven't destroyed Peter Parker fully yet is because they want to introduce a replacement, ideally a female one given Miles is too tied up with Sony for them to use.

Most likely Mayday Parker, using the Tobey Maguire Spider-man 4 to set-up the character and then moving them to the main universe.

Silk is also an option as Cindy Moon was in Spider-man: Homecoming, Infinity War and shown briefly in No Way Home - the character will be getting more attention in Disney Spider-man 3 game.

If we get Justin Lin, I’m gonna be bummed. We need a director who has substance and style (Lin has neither) while not being so green that Marvel/Sony can just manipulate into doing their biddings.

Maybe a bit off topic but a Matrix reboot, like the Keanu Reeves Matrix? Really already, how long has it been since that last disaster by those brothers who are now sisters or something like that?

I hope Sony keeps a low profile so we can get a Spider-Man 4 otherwise it could be a Spider-Man movie with Morbius, Madame Web and everything else Sony sent to hell and back. Hopefully Kraven will be good, here's hoping.
