SPIDER-MAN: Kevin Smith Expresses Disappointment With The Wall-Crawler's Departure From The MCU

Spider-Man: Far From Home will be the web-slinger's final appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, & Kevin Smith is now the latest person to weigh in on what the future might hold in store for Spidey!

As things currently stand, there are no plans for Sony Pictures and Disney/Marvel Studios to strike a deal to keep Tom Holland's Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That's a shame, but it's just the wall-crawler's new reality and it means we're now going to see him cross paths with the likes of Venom and Morbius, the Living Vampire. However, one person who isn't overly excited about the prospect of a third Spider-Man movie not set in the MCU is Kevin Smith.

"Far From Home is predicated on ‘I miss Tony’ so much, if the next movie is like ‘Tony who? Where’s Uncle Ben?’, like it’s going to be a real f***king letdown I feel," he says on his latest podcast. "But they still get to keep all those kids, right? Like all the people in this world are the same, they just can’t reference the Marvel Universe? It’s going to be a bummer, I really hope they figure that out."

There's no way Sony Pictures doesn't pay attention to this sort of thing and they're bound to know that the response to Spider-Man no longer being part of the same world as The Avengers has been overwhelmingly negative. Money talks, though, and a deal does appear to be pretty unlikely.

As a result, the pressure is on the studio to ensure that the third chapter is truly spectacular!

This whole thing stinks. Holland's Spidey belongs in the MCU, nowhere else. Whatever Sony will do next will likely be financially successful, but it won't be the same, and I can't say if I'll be there for it.

I'm more worried about what happens to the canon afterwards, if/when Feige gets Spidey back.

Do we just have to ignore all the shit Sony decides to put him through between now and then? It's gonna be 10x harder to acknowledge or get away from than The Incredible Hulk has been for the MCU.

@Kurne -
Sony have more potential to deliver an amazing Holland Spider-man 3 film than Disney do.

Disney's solution was going to be Skrulls and turning Spider-man 3 into Secret Invasion with Carol Danvers having a large role.

Sony's solution is likely going to be multiverse with Madame Web ripping him from his current world to fight alongside Maguire and Garfield in a live-action Spider-verse movie.

@Scarilian - Yeah....and based on that...I’d rather have a Secret Invasion storyline. Skrulls impersonation could help explain away Spider-Man being outed by Mysterio to the public. And I want all the Captain Marvel I can stand. She’s dreamy AF.

Disney would'nt even give you a Spider-man movie with Spider-man hitting a villain because they thought Spider-man needed to be child-friendly. You think they would ever adapt a complex multiverse storyline involving the death of Spider-man? xD

@Scarilian - good point, though I saw it more as an insecure teenage superhero still finding his way. His spider sense only just developed, the face punching would come later (I'd assume in a green goblin gwen/mj dies arc). With Disney you had a pretty solid chance you'd see Spider-Man grow and evolve like Harry Potter did. With Sony mehhh... plus do we really wanna see pudgy Tobey Maguire again?

Except he did hit the bad guys in Homecoming. xD He kicks the hell out of the bad guys in the ATM robbery and ferry scenes. But hey, whatever makes you sleep at night.

If only Marvel Studios had the courage to kill major characters... Yeah, you´re right, we will never see the death of major MCU characters. Imagine Iron Man or Black Widow dying?! It will never happen!

I’m still waiting to hear what Sony can and can’t use/reference, including the supporting casts... I have doubts it’s as clean as people imagine.

I will say, I’m just not that into Spider-verse as a concept. The movie was fun, but they were smart to keep the actual Peter Parkers separate, and even then they still looked like each other (as Aunt May recognized the old Peter right away). I don’t really get this whole ‘different Peter Parkers from different universes don’t look anything like each other’ thing, so attempts to put Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland into the same film don’t appeal to me.

So are we going to get Kevin Smith articles every week? He has a youtube channel where he expresses his opinions on pop culture, plus he has two live podcasts where he does the same in front of an audience.

@soberchimera - I also don't get why every 3 days his views are shared on any comic book movie related website. Aside from his He Man Netflix show, Isn't he a hasbeen? Do we want more Jay & Silent Bob? Always bringing up how he almost did a Superman movie like 20-30 years back. It's not that he's still involved right? All of his inside info is based on "I heard it to the grapevine". He's TMZ for comic book people

@GodEmperorDoom - His Daredevil and Green Arrow runs alone will always be essential reading for fans of those characters. More heart in those two defining runs than 99% of the comic writers working.
