SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK Silences The Doubters By Breaking Broadway Records

The formerly disaster prone and mocked Broadway musical broke not only its previous box office record during the holiday season, but also recorded the highest single-week attendance by any show in Broadway history!

Between numerous injuries, a ridiculously high budget, awful early reviews and too many other disasters to mention, things didn't exactly start out all that well for the musical. However, Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark has ended being something of a shock success in recent months. After a slight revamp and some behind-the-scenes creative changes, the reviews took a far more positive turn and theatre lovers flocked to see the show. The following press release highlights just how well it did over the holiday season. Bet you didn't see this coming, eh?

New York, NY – SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark, Broadway’s most popular new show, rang in the New Year as the highest grossing show on Broadway, shattering the record for the highest single-week gross of any show in Broadway history. The total gross for the record-breaking week ending Sunday, January 1 was $2,941,790.20, besting the previous record of $2,228,235 set by Wicked in 2011. Playing to 17,375 audience members (100.02% capacity of The Foxwoods Theatre), SPIDER-MAN also enjoyed the highest single-week attendance by any show in Broadway history (playing a standard 9-show holiday schedule).

The Foxwoods previous box office record of $2,070,195.60 was set by the show just four weeks ago. Currently in its second smash-hit year on Broadway, SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark began preview performances on November 28, 2010, and has become one of the most famous theatrical events in Broadway history, playing to packed houses and standing, screaming ovations nightly.

"We are thrilled that the public has taken such a liking to this show," said producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris. "The audience continues to grow, and it is great to enter the New Year with such momentum."

SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark has been seen by more than 700,000 audience members from around the world. It features music and lyrics by 22-time Grammy® Award-winners Bono and The Edge, direction by Philip William McKinley (The Boy From Oz), original direction by Tony® Award-winner Julie Taymor (The Lion King, Across The Universe, Frida), and book co-written by Taymor, Glen Berger (Underneath The Lintel) and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Fantastic Four and Spider-Man comics, "Big Love"). The show currently stars Reeve Carney as "Peter Parker/Spider-Man," Patrick Page as "Norman Osborn/Green Goblin," Rebecca Faulkenberry as "Mary Jane Watson," and Christina Sajous as "Arachne."

Inspired by nearly 50 years of Marvel comic books, SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling. This bullied science-geek suddenly endowed with incredible powers soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains put both his physical strength and strength of character to the test.

I saw it with my wife (her idea...loves Broadway). The tickets were insane ($175 per person, but my brother works for a ticket agency and got us a deal). The show was...good. Very good. The stunts were impressive, and the music was really good. Thought I'd hate it growing up a Spidey fan. Didn't. It was actually impressive. 3 hours went by very fast.

I actually had the chance to see the show over the summer. It really is terrific. The story is good enough to keep your attention, the costumes for the villains are great in a comical sort of way, and the effects are fantastic. The music was the only thing I took any issue with. Some of the songs (like Rise Above) are really great, and others (like Bullying by Numbers), not so much. If you're in town and have the cash, I suggest you go see it. It's a good time. And I thought I'd hate it xD

I like how people who have actually seen it leave positive comments while ignorant people who havn't seen it sit back & talk about how much they 'know' it sucks. I'm sure it's an entertaining show. I'm not a fan of musical movies, but theater musicals are a lot of fun to go see.(They did Beauty and the Beast at the theater where I live and it was amazing) If I was living in NY, I would definitely go check it out and I'm sure I wouldn't be disappointed.

God this show was awful. The acrobatics were great, however the music and story were just, there is no word in my vernacular that can describe the awfulness of it's songs and plot.

Having said that if you are into theater and want to check out a great play, see the book of Mormon if and when it comes to your town.

SPOILERS. I made an account just to comment on this. the music was shit, the plot, still shitty. carnage, a favorite character of mine, was beaten by Spiderman after he webs him. not a punch, nothing. the lizard was a man with a dinosaur head coming out of his chest and a tail out.of his back. Norman Osborne had a country accent. he created the sinister six by combining human DNA with other animals. somehow he made a person who was half human half Swiss army knife. also what kind of animal has goblin DNA? and the aerial sequences are only impressive in the last ten minutes of this show with about two hours and a half of crap and boring...ness in front of it. I work for a ticket broker so I got to see it for free and I still feel ripped off. also these numbers mean nothing, Spiderman turn off the dark wull have to be on Broadway for 12 years to actually make a profit with everything considered. maybe a little less after this year, but still.

Makes perfect sense. As horrible as this show appears to be it still looks a hell of a lot more entertaining than every other 'musical' out there. Plus its been getting non-stop publicity since its inception, which is a big deal since the average person probably can'
t name more than two or three actual musicals that are out right now.

Also, the Nascar effect probably helps. Why would anyone want to watch a bunch of cars race to take left turns for hours on end? Oh yeah because many enthusists are secretly hoping to see some crashes and explosions. Likewise, I bet more than a few people saw the musical secretly hoping an accident happens and someone gets hurt or dies so they can say they were there.

Add it all together and you get a winner :p

@ELgUaSoN I went precisely because it was free. That was essentially my review on it, with spoilers. Making it a Musical does not mean it has to suck,or make no sense. There was not an ounce of quality or creativity in any part of it minus the aerial sequences.

@Shadowelfz I'm not too into musicals myself, i prefer plays but the problem is with the advertisement. A lot of the musicals playing right now are actually pretty great, loads better than Spider-man turn off the dark. I also blame the pricing, but in their defense it does cost a lot of money to keep a show running.

In the end if you have the money to spend on The Lion King, WIcked and The Book of mormon its definitely money well spent. Even lesser known and cheaper shows like Memphis, How to Succeed Without Even Trying, On A Clear Day, Mary Poppins and even Sister act are way better, and most times even cheaper

umm people are seeing it, not because they think it's a good show, but because they want to see how terrible it is.
