SPIDER-NOIR Promo Art Doubles Down On Big Change To Spider-Man's "Power And Responsibility" Mantra

New Spider-Noir promo art shows Nicolas Cage's Ben Reilly in some classic Spider-Man poses, but the show's tagline appears to go against everything Peter Parker stands for.

Spider-Noir premieres on Prime Video next month, and the first promo art featuring Nicolas Cage's web-spinner has been revealed. There are some classic Spider-Man poses here, and a tagline that first caught the attention of fans when the teaser trailer was released.

"With No Power Comes No Responsibility," it reads, a stark contrast to the more familiar "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility."

Is this a hint that Cage's Ben Reilly won't have superpowers? What we've seen of him shooting webs and swinging around New York seems to dispel that theory, though we've seen it suggested that Spider-Noir's powers are in his head, with those moments all imagined. We'll see.

Spider-Noir has a solid cast and creative team, so even taking some major liberties with the comics could be acceptable to fans if the series is good enough. Still, the "With Great Power..." mantra is supposed to be a key part of every Spider-Man's story, so it will be interesting to learn why that differs for this wall-crawler.

Co-showrunner Oren Uziel recently addressed another big change to this Spider-Man Variant when he addressed the decision to put Ben Reilly under the P.I.'s mask. "Peter Parker feels very synonymous with a high school kid. Boyish. On his way up. Ben Reilly has already gone through the entire arc and has seen it all."

"He’s over it, and trying to move past it. But his past kind of keeps coming back to haunt him. It's just a different version that we haven't seen before."

Executive producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have also addressed the change, with the latter explaining, "This character's very different from the Peter Parker from the movies. He's older and jaded, and not afraid to punch a guy in the face drunkenly." Lord noted, "He already had his Chinatown disillusionment moment that happened years and years ago."

"I have to be coy about the reasons, because you'll find out," he continued, before Miller added, "The reason he's named Ben Riley is explained. We’ll leave it at that."

Take a closer look at this first wave of Spider-Noir promo art in the X post below.

Spider-Noir's cast includes Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage (Adaptation), Emmy Award-winning actor Lamorne Morris (New Girl), Li Jun Li (Sinners), Karen Rodriguez (The Hunting Wives), Abraham Popoola (Atlas), with SAG Award-winning actor Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), and Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated actor Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin).

Guest stars include Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, Andrew Caldwell, Amy Aquino, Andrew Robinson, and Kai Caster.

Spider-Noir is produced by Sony Pictures Television exclusively for MGM+ and Prime Video. Emmy Award-winning director Harry Bradbeer (Fleabag, Killing Eve) directed and executive produced the first two episodes.

Emmy Award winner Harry Bradbeer (FleabagKilling Eve) directed and executive produced the first two episodes. Oren Uziel (The Lost City22 Jump Street) and Steve Lightfoot (Marvel's The PunisherShantaram) serve as co-showrunners and executive producers.

Uziel and Lightfoot developed the series with the Academy Award–winning team behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal. Lord and Miller executive produce, with Aditya Sood and Dan Shear. Amy Pascal also serves as an executive producer through Pascal Pictures.

All episodes of Spider-Noir premiere on Prime Video on May 27.

A powerless Spider-noir would likely get rejected by the intended audience. I'm guessing the show starts with a Ben that's lost his powers and stopped being Spider-man because of it. No powers, no responsibility. For some reason, his powers return and that leads to the new Spider-noir identity - a blend of his previous Spider-man identity and current private investigator identity. The "in his head" suggestions could be a reference to him dreaming of when he had them before they return...?

@Deckacards - "A powerless Spider-noir would likely get rejected by the intended audience."

Who do you think the intended audience is?

@JackDeth - Just a wild stab here, but people who know who Spider-man is and expect a similarly powered main character in a show called "Spider-noir" led by a dude dressed like an S&M version of Spider-man?

I could be wrong, though. They could be targeting Jehova's Witnesses. It's a mystery really.

@Deckacards - Ooooooo. so close. No, the target audience is (say it with me)

EVERYONE !!! that's right, everyone. Good job.

This has mainstream appeal as a detective show with a weird protagonist played by Nicholas F-n Cage. People will watch out of curiosity, whether they know who Spider-man is or not.

Also... does Spider-Noir even have powers in the film? All he does is punch people and watch matches burn down.

@JackDeth - Whew. You should reach out and tell them then. They're gonna be pretty bummed that they wasted so much time and money and effort on all that Spider-man related material, what with all its recognizable IP and inherited fanbase and genre groupings. Probably could've just made a show about a tin can that talks, although, the anti-fantasy crowd would probably hoot an' holler. Heck, I even know one lady that's the most well read person I've ever met - devours books! - but won't read anything even close to fantasy, sci-fi, etc. cause "it's not real!" Apparently, "fiction" has to be based in reality for her.

It's a cute sentiment, and if empty statements help you sleep, then by all means engage in them. But the reality is, no studio makes things like this - or anything, really - for "everyone." There're huge pockets of the population - more than you realize, it seems - that they'll never reach with something like this. And they know that. And if they know there are people they won't reach and don't try to reach - my father, for example, watched westerns almost exclusively - then it stands to reason that all the money they spend in researching and testing and making the show from concept to rollout includes SOME thought into a target audience.

As a writer for years, I can promise you - there's always an "ideal reader." There are many levels surrounding that core group, sure, and their direct relationship with the source material and concept varies the farther you get from that core group...but there's always a target audience, and while anyone would love it if a show was watched by EVERYONE !!! regardless of demographic or viewing interests, no one I know is delusional enough to believe a show is actually made for everyone.

Well...okay...I guess now there's ONE !!! person that I know.

Does Cage’s Ben Riley not have super powers in this or is it more that he has no “power” against the “system” or sum such? Because any Spider-Man should have spider powers.

Perhaps this is me reading into it but it could be that this Chinatown-esque disillusionment that the showrunner is talking about is Ben realizing that after trying so hard to stop crime and make the city safe that eventually he felt like it was all for nothing since corruption would always be there & the criminals such as Silvermane would get away scot free due to their power & influence so why bother hence him giving up being a super-hero?.

That could be the reason that the mantra “With No Power comes No Responsibility” is there because while he has his super powers , he has no real power to exert or influence so in his cynical & jaded mindset , it gives him no responsibility to help since he feel it would useless but this is just me spitballing.

Anyway , cool promo art and I’m looking forward to the show!!.

Glad to hear it, not every take on Spider-Man character needs to be some optimistic vigilante.
