On Marc Webb's effortful quest to find an actor to suit up as the new friendly neighborhood Spider-Man,for Sony's reboot of the franchise he found British actor Andrew Garfield.

On the quest concluding with Garfield, there were hundreds of young actors considered. And after each stage, those young men were narrowed down in the process. Eventually the "hundred" became three "strongly" considered finalist. Obviously knowing who one of the three were, the other two has been revealed.

An individual with immediate knowledge of the casting process tells Deal Central that contrary to published reports, Sony only reviewed the three strongest test tapes and that the other two finalists were Jamie Bell and Alden Ehrenreich.

Before narrowing down to the three, the supposed short-list included Aaron Johnson, Anton Yelchin, Josh Hutcherson, Frank Dillane, and of course the finalists.

Jaime Bell has the most acting experience landing many roles in tentpole films including Peter Jackson's King Kong remake. And the English actor recently wrapped on Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn". Alden Ehrenreich was discovered by Steven Spielberg when Spielberg saw a short comedy movie featuring the actor at the age of 14. Having the least amount of experience out of the short-list, the actor has come a long way.

But Andrew Garfield will be the next big thing in this reboot. And directed by Marc Webb, production begins in December, and Spidey swings back into theaters July 3, 2012 in the big 3D.

Well, I'd say we were pretty lucky then because neither Bell or Ehrenreich are very good choices!

DCMF: Head back over to your other Spider-Man article and check out my comment directed at you about a Spidey graphic novel you should most definitely buy! :)

I'm sorry but I think this Andrew kid is a little bit too unattractive to be Peter Parker. I'm aware that Peter Parker is not good looking but average, but Andrew Garfield is a little bit just under par.

DCMF: I'm not sure...it's a real epic though that introduced some great new characters, made Peter Parker a high school teacher and you'll never guess who finds out his secret identity on the last page..! Oh, and it also happens to feature one of the most violent and near death fights in the caharacters history! Whether you buy or download it, get it! It'll make you a fan of Spider-Man in the first few pages! :)

DCMF: It's full title is: "Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1: Coming Home" and it's by J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr.

It's about 8 or 9 years old but still a classic and one of the greatest Spider-Man stories ever told IMO! :)

DCMF: I have no idea where you'd find it online...like I said before though, I'm pretty sure that you could pick it up on somewhere like eBay or Amazon for a good price. And believe me, it's worth EVERY penny! Once you read that first volume I'm guessing that you'll want to go and puck up the rest of JMS' fantastic run on Amazing!

That's what I did! Although I was a fan of Spider-Man before reading this (and I had read a fair few stories featuring the character by that point) back in 2001, it was this arc that really got me into comic books and cemented Spider-Man as my all time favourite character! :) Here I am 9 years later at 20 years of age and despite the hundreds, maybe thousands, of comic books I've read since it's still my all time favourite!

Not too big a fan of Romita Jr's work, but JMS can really tell a story. I wish he was still on Amazing, but from what he wanted to do with the last 20 years of history (throw it out the window) I'm almost glad he's not.

Garfield is without a doubt a better choice then Bell Ehreneich, still Maguire could easily still pull off Spiderman, especially since its back to a college setting.

then Bell and Ehreneich*

IMO Tobey wasn't never really the character for me Deadshot, and he was looking a little rough in the last one, gettiing too old for the role. Not so sure he should've continued even if things went the other way.
Deadshot
Deadshot - 7/2/2010, 7:43 PM
Well were all entitled to our opinions. But Tobey was 30 when they were filming Spiderman 3, Garfield is 27 right now in 3 years he may look to old for the part.

I'll be honest folks; I was dreading Spiderman 4 like a prison newbie dreads his first group shower in general population and feared that the result was going to be the same either way.

I know saying anything bad about the Raimi Franchise has become taboo since it was apparently canonized into sainthood after he and the cast were let go, but anyone who has gone back and rewatched the Spidey movies recently may notice... They had major flaws.

I am convinced that if Spiderman 4 had been released it would have effectively killed the franchise anyway and only delayed the inevitable reboot. We were heading head long into the land of Vulture, Raimi admitted more singing and dancing, and a terminal alteration to Black Cat simply because as was the case with Venom she was a character that came after Raimi's era of Spiderman and since he had no connection to the character he felt no need to make sure she was handled properly after all dear Felicia was on her way to becoming Vultress...[frick]ING VULTRESS PEOPLE. No think about that movie. Do you or do you not think that would have been a raging piece of shit? I read the boards back then, most of you did. So why all the hate? I'd rather see a reboot done well, and more true to the comics than a continuation of all the worst elements of Spidey 3 being expounded upon. It was over.

The sad truth is Tobey made a decent Peter and and a shit Spidey, by the end he was becoming too old, too paunchy, and too blasé with the role. The scripts lacked a sharp wit from anyone aside from JJJ and I wonder how much of that was just brilliant improv on the part of JK Simmons. Spidey himself was given no humor, no mouth, and frankly no balls. MJ was never handled well and fluctuated from whining damsel in distress to outright bitchy verging on bipolar. And need I remind you Raimi for some reason felt every single villain needed to be in some way a tragic figure; Sandman, sure I get that, but OCK a grief stricken loving husband, and power ranger goblin, though wonderfully cast and acted, were simply not the characters we knew and loved. Lastly, Raimi demonstrated a near spoiled demeanor at times toward the fans, grumbling about putting Venom in the jumble that was the third film and then killing him just to spite the fans (in my opinion.)

So the reboot gets a good lead, I've gone back and watched some of his work today and the kid can really freakin' act. I am sold that he will be solid as not only Peter, but as Spiderman as well. I think moving the story to college makes much more sense. I always had a problem with teenage Spidey getting from Queens into Manhattan, odd I know, but think about it; what the [frick] did he swing on? What did he ride his moped to the Queensboro bridge and then park it while he swung off? At Empire U Peter was in town and it just made more sense.

Give this thing a chance is all I'm saying. It can't be any worse than what we were going to get from Raimi given what has been confirmed about Spiderman 4.
