David Ayer Pens A Heartfelt Note Reflecting On SUICIDE SQUAD; Regrets Not Making Joker The Main Villain
Here's an unexpected twist for your Championship Sunday, as Suicide Squad director David Ayer has released a heartfelt letter reflecting on the success and failure of his highly controversial movie.
Despite a historically bad reception from critics and fans alike, David Ayer's Suicide Squad - Warner Bros.' latest entry in their ever-expanding DC Cinematic Universe - was able to persevere and racked up over $745.6 million at the worldwide box office, which made it the tenth highest-grossing film and fourth highest grossing superhero movie of 2016. Certainly not a bad haul for the worst heroes ever.
While the box office success was more than enough to get the ball rolling on a Harley Quinn-led spin-off, tentatively titled Gotham City Sirens, starring Margot Robbie and with Ayer once again back in the director's chair, the widespread disdain for Ayer's film didn't do much good for the DCEU brand, which has been on somewhat of a downward spiral ever since the release of Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice early last year.
With the evolution of social media platforms and the constant media circus surrounding comic book movies nowadays, it's hard to shy away from the limelight when involved with one of these properties, which is not necessarily a bad thing following the release of a good film but can definitely be one of the most trying experiences for a filmmaker following the release of a not-so-good film.
Late yesterday, Ayer decided to tackle his criticisms head-on when he penned a heartfelt letter to a fan where he reflected on his journey to make Suicide Squad and where he also goes on to thank fans for their support, acknowledge his shortcomings, and makes a promise to be better in the future. The biggest takeaway from the note comes at the top of the final paragraph where he expresses his regret at not making the Joker his film's main villain as that would've allowed him to tell a much more grounded and coherent story.

It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
