DEADSHOT Movie Starring Will Smith Was Put On Hold Long Before The Actor's Controversial Oscars Appearance

A number of projects starring Will Smith have been put on hold since the actor slapped comedian Chris Rock during this year's Academy Awards, but an update has now been revealed about Deadshot's status...

After Will Smith won a "Best Actor" Oscar for his work in King Richard during this year's Academy Awards, he should have become one of the most in-demand talents in Hollywood. However, Smith's attack on comedian Chris Rock has made him persona non grata, and over the past few weeks, we've seen the next Bad Boys movie put on hold alongside a Netflix project he was attached to.

In Rolling Stone's story about Warner Bros.' decision to "hit pause" on future movies starring The Flash's Ezra Mille (who knows what that means for the DC Extended Universe and Fantastic Beasts franchise), an update about Deadshot is also shared. As you may recall, the spinoff was first mentioned shortly after Suicide Squad was released, but it's never come to fruition.

According to the site, Deadshot remains on hold, though it was on the backburner long before Smith chose to slap Rock for making a G.I. Jane joke. It appears Warner Bros. hoped to make the movie on a budget as "Smith, whose price tag was $20 million for Warner Bros. King Richard, priced himself out well before his controversy." In other words, he wanted too much money.

That could explain why there was no sign of Floyd Lawton in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, with Idris Elba initially said to be playing Deadshot before he was revealed as Bloodsport. That character was almost identical to Smith's in everything but name and costume, but the odds of Smith getting to reprise the role in the DCEU are now more unlikely than ever before following the Oscars.

As for The Flash, while its release was recently pushed back to 2023, there's obviously no chance Miller will be recast in the coming months. However, the Multiverse could easily result in the Scarlet Speedster getting a new face by the time that story wraps up. We'll have more on that for you soon!

I don’t agree with Smith, and I’m more on side with Rock and his defenders. But Smith needs to lay low for a year or two, then do a Mickey Rourke Wrestler style comeback (minus the horrible plastic surgery)

@Se4M4NSt4ine - minus? No. No. He’d be so excited! Don’t deny him plastic surgery just cuz he slapped a fish

Christ this is getting blown well out of proportion. Hollywood is full of literally Rapist, racists, and all sorts who keep making movies but Will Smith is out because of a slap? Insane

@Twenty23Three - yeah. What the guy did was wrong but still. Not even Rock is making a big deal about it

There should be consequences but this is in no way bad enough that it should end his career.

Although to be fare, technically outside of delaying some stuff nothing has really happened. He left the academy on his own. They still haven’t said if he will be punished by the academy

Bet they are regretting asking Gunn to replace Deadshot in The Suicide Squad

Got to say Elba was a better Deadshot (minus the name) than Smith

Is there anyone in the DCEU that is NOT shrouded in scandal? This whole experiment has been a horrific mess! I am sure that there are things we don't know that are equally as disturbing.

@Forthas - It's not a DCEU issue, it's a Hollywood issue. There are plenty of DC actors like Cavill who don't court controversy, just as there is the likes of Mark Ruffalo in Marvel who maintains a similarly controversy-free life. And then on the flipside, Robert Downey Jr had his share of issues back in the day, James Gunn was all over the media for a while, Jeremy Renner's had his share of accusations of domestic violence and so on, etc. It really has nothing to do with the choice of studio hiring them and everything to do with the personalities involved.

I don't disagree! I just focused on the DCEU because it has been a long list of DC specific stars recently.

You know you keep hearing about Smith’s trauma about his childhood, it effecting his behavior as far back as Fresh Prince

Maybe Smith should take a break and actually deal with his shit

Like really he ruined a woman’s career because she didnt laugh at his jokes and dragged her name through the mud for close to 30 years

He basically threatened Paul Rodriguez on the set of Ali over comments made by the man the guy was playing made when he visited the set and then had Rodriguez cut out of the movie, making him basically an extra

Now this

I can imagine Deadshot recast in Reeves' Bat-Universe. John Hoogenakker may be a good option.

@Repian - I have yet to see him in a role I don't like, so I would be up for that. Think he'd also make a cool Deathstroke

For me personally this is no big loss and there is a lot better of potential characters to make a movie out of than a Deadshot movie.

Give me a Grifter movie if WB wants a character with guns and if WB wants a black superhero, please bring out an Icon movie.

Icon is just begging for a movie and would be a lot different than Superman too.

@BlackIceJoe - I am in no way, shape, or form an artist of any sort, however, the movie poster I envision for Icon looks amazing...!👍

Come on we can't get another Superman movie or one decent Green Lantern one but there were plans for a Deadshot one... Go figure, I guess star power is more important to Warner Bros (unless it's Batman)

I like Will Smith (except for the smacking), but I just cannot see him in a solo Deadshot project. Rather just see Idris Elba return as Bloodsport

Well then WB let’s take this golden opportunity he has presented and recast the role and give the character more of his defining traits in the comics namely: his desire to die in a spectacular fashion, this being his primary motivation for joining the Suicide Squad. He feels he has no reason to continue living, and, while he does not want to commit suicide, he simply does not care if he dies. But also: his disregard for human life especially to advance the group's objectives and his having a brother, whom he idolized, which resonates with Deadshot's attachment to Rick Flag, team leader.

Semi Related: uncancel TI. Like Boosie said, he ain’t gotta coerce nobody to get in his rolls Royce. Lots of accusers gets confused for lots of witnesses. Each accuser should have a couple witnesses, but one whiff of that and you’re out of the club, the club that knows it could happen to any one of them at any time.

Will and Ezra got witnesses😬😶

Movie was cancelled in 2017, the [frick] is this?

On the other hand, I dont want to throw the R card around, but I doubt Hollywood would be so hard on him if his skin color was different, we have LITERALLY someone chocking women, starting fights in Hawai, and going around threatening people, but "he needs help, he is sick", but a black man slaps a person insulting his wife for a medical condition and "CANCEL HIM, HE IS A MENACE TO SOCIETY"

@TheHumanSpider2 - The people coming after Smith are mostly Comedians and Conservatives. Hollywood hasn't really done anything to him. They let him get his award and do his speech right after the incident.
