SUICIDE SQUAD: David Ayer Says His Heart Breaks For Jared Leto As Much Of His Joker Work Remains "Unseen"

It's no secret that much of Jared Leto's work as The Joker in Suicide Squad ended up on the cutting room floor at the behest of Warner Bros., and now director David Ayer has weighed in on that...

Suicide Squad director David Ayer has been talking a lot about The Joker on social media over the past few days, and the filmmaker has now weighed in on what happened to Jared Leto's performance in the movie.

When Warner Bros. panicked after the response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, they decided that the tone of Task Force X's big screen debut needed to be lightened. As a result, much of Harley Quinn's abusive relationship with The Joker was cut, and we know that he was supposed to return during the final battle to try to take out his lover's new teammates.

Responding to a fan on social media, Ayer expressed his surprise at people still talking about the movie's version of the Clown Prince of Crime so many years after Suicide Squad was released and noted that he actually took inspiration from how The Joker was being portrayed in the comics at the time (thinking about it, he did have a fair bit in common with Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's take).

He also expressed his heartbreak over the fact that much of Leto's "magnificent work" now "remains unseen" after it was cut out of the movie, presumably at the behest of Warner Bros.

Worst Joker ever. Worst DCEU movie ever.

I think that it is still such a hot topic because it was such a hot take on the character

His heart should also break for his movie resulting in Birds of Prey.

@soberchimera

I’m sorry but Suicide Squad is one of the worst movies of the 2000s.

BoP isn’t even close to SS bad - regardless of what you think of the plot or the portrayal of men in Gotham.

@soberchimera - Birds of Prey is TDK compared to Suicide Squad

@regularmovieguy - "The portrayal of men in Gotham"? Who has a problem with that? About 98% of the criminals in Gotham are guys and about 100% of them suck. Ask Batman.

“ Who has a problem with that?”

You visit any of the BOP threads haha

@regularmovieguy - It's a bad movie without bringing identity politics into it. Just because it's better than SS doesn't mean it's good.

@WakandanQueen - Batman Forever is TDK compared to Batman & Robin. Rise of the Silver Surfer is TDK compared to Fant4stic. X-Men: The Last Stand is TDK compared to Dark Phoenix. Obviously, there's different levels of crapness.

@soberchimera

What makes it a “bad” movie? Curious to know. I’d say it’s a meh movie but definitely not outright bad.

@regularmovieguy - Gee let's see, the plot was stupid, they screwed up the characters of Cassandra Cain, Zsasz, and Black Mask. Harley commits an act of domestic terrorism and gets away scott free, Rosie Perez's voice, no character development for Harley, anticlimactic ending, trying too hard to be Deadpool, etc.

@soberchimera

"Gee let's see, the plot was stupid, they screwed up the characters of Cassandra Cain, Zsasz, and Black Mask"

Zsasz and Black Mask have such depth in the comics, right?

"Harley commits an act of domestic terrorism and gets away scott free"

Comic book movie...she blew up Ace Chemicals. Really if you're going to complain about people getting away in cbms then this isnt the genre for you. Some would prolly consider Batman a domestic terrorist. Lol. If you want hyper realism it's a miracle you like any cbms

"Rosie Perez's voice"

How old are you?

"no character development for Harley"

It's her movie - if you didn't see her arc in the movie then you weren't paying attention. At all.

" anticlimactic ending"

Black Mask getting blown to pieces? I disagree but that's your prerogative.

"trying too hard to be Deadpool"

That would be comic accurate though so...not sure where your angle is there. Makes sense for a Harley movie to be like that.

It's in the same boat as literally most cbms. One and done watch is all that's needed.

Not great, not terrible. Just meh - fine. You're more than welcome to dislike the movie. Definitely not for everyone. But your complaints are not really CBM problems.

The story structure was messy, not all the jokes hit, the theme was pretty heavy handed. But it was well put together.

DCEU Movies:

1.) Joker
2.) Shazam
3.) Wonder Woman
4.) Aquaman
5.) BOP
6.) MOS
7.) BvS
8.) Justice League
9.) Suicide Squad

@regularmovieguy - Look, if you like the movie, congradu[frick]inglations, I personally thought it was garbage, you can nitpick my reasons all you want, welcome to the internet, people are going to have different opinions than you.

"welcome to the internet, people are going to have different opinions than you"

I absolutely agree. Haha I just think your OP comment was super childish considering Suicide Squad is bar none way worse than BoP. No questions asked.

Big difference between a meh movie and "my eyes are on fire, holy shit what is this?" movie.

@soberchimera - MEH, Zsasz was ten times more entertaining than in Batman Begins... he was demented and weird.. in a creepy, unsettling and even scary but also funny in a messed up way... what else do you want?

Black Mask was a dick out to prove himself for nothing more than his hatred of his family... which is Roman Sionis basically... and has been... and he was successfully amassing his presence in Gotham til the Birds of Prey coming together.
Plus, again, massively entertaining. They managed to throw some camp while making him still legitimately disturbing and unsettling.

Which actually brought a satisfactory enough reason as to why they all came together...

Also, no... Harley blowing up Ace Chemicals is what brought everyone after her...
Also, it's Gotham... while noteworthy, it's not the most irregular thing in Gotham and in a world of things like Superman, Zodd, Steppenwolf... the government is preoccupied.

They absolutely didn't portray Cassandra correctly though and I'll give that... though she's also in a workable area, so it's not such a big deal to me. I'll admit I'm not big on her comics enough to be bothered.

@soberchimera -
It's actually a good movie, and Harley Quinn and all-female groups are naturally gonna be about identity politics.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 5/5/2020, 11:56 AM
@Slotherin - I wrote that out of order... Sionis brought a satisfactory enough reason for all the characters to come together.
