SUICIDE SQUAD Director David Ayer Praises Marvel Studios' Approach To Additional Photography

Reshoots are a standard practice for big budget blockbusters these days, but Suicide Squad director David Ayer clearly wishes that he could have handled things the Marvel Studios way on his DC movie...

Following the negative response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. ordered reshoots on Suicide Squad which ultimately lightened the movie's tone, but also turned it into something of a mess. Director David Ayer has expressed his dissatisfaction with the process a number of times in the past, but has now added to that...by praising Marvel Studios?!

Yes, the man who once declared "F*** Marvel!" is clearly wishing he had been given the opportunity to handle reshoots the way they do there on Suicide Squad back in 2016 (rather than seemingly being forced to reshape the DC Comics adaptation so late in the game).

It's easy to see where he's coming from, and these comments actually came after one fan suggested that he could direct the rumoured Namor the Submariner movie. That would be an interesting fit, and seeing as Ayer brought a lot of great ideas to the table with Suicide Squad, getting to see him tackle another comic book adaptation down the line would be no bad thing.

Whether that's an opportunity he'll get in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is hard to say, though!

And that's why Marvel reshoots are rarely anything to worry about.

Not in all case but some WB reshoots are a knee jerk reaction to something they didn't like (JL, SS).

@ClungesOfPrey - the only instances of reshoot I remember noticing was in homecoming and Ragnarok because of the green screen. And they weren't bad by any means.

Justice League reshoots are just something else. They switch from set to green screen between shots.

@JustALurker - I'll wager part of the benefit of shooting Marvel movies a bit flatter, a bit brighter, and a bit more like a TV show is that it's not as hard to match that house style in reshoots and compositing.

Sometimes it looks fairly dogshit, like the New Avengers scene in Ultron*, but most of the time... it's just pretty naturalistic and versatile, aiding in blending these characters together. You can imagine what Netflix's Daredevil (a pretty damn good looking suit in that context) would have looked like if they had tried to cross him over with less stylized lighting:

When the MCU looks good, it's generally because the fundamentals of the design look good, not because they're relying on strategic lighting and camera angles to carefully craft an illusion. At least, that's my theory.

*(Though I think it's clear Whedon was trying to ape more cinematic styles in Ultron, probably trying to compensate for Avengers being particularly flat looking. I think the result is one of the biggest aesthetic missteps of the MCU.)

@JustALurker - justice league was just a shambles I'd rather have had whatever it is they hated from the Snyder's cut than the ugly stitched together trash we got from whedon. His reshoots didn't gel with the original scenes at all. That 2nd aquaman image you posted looks like he is standing in front of a wall mounted poster not even green screen 😭😭😭

@ClungesOfPrey - Justice League made me appreciate Batman V Superman more and more.

Scheduled reshoots are great... for everyone except Idris Elba. That dude did not like coming back to do some dumb meaningless stunt to spice up a lackluster second act.

While I agree this is a big reason why Marvel films are so regularly put together, this has sometimes led to them getting too comfortable "finding " their movies in post (Thor 2, for example) rather than executing on a more refined plan that's just bolstered by reshoots (the Russo's films)

Also, randomly started another Spider-Man ps4 playthrough and suddenly remembered how this thing ends

@OmegaDaGrodd - I've been playing some retro games lately and it's reminding me how much I miss old-school pre-internet video gaming culture. I just want some doofy ten-year-old to try desperately to convince me that his cousin's stepdad works for Sony and said that if you webswing counter-clockwise around the Avengers Tower seven times, Aunt May lives.

Wait David Ayer said "Frick Marvel"

I thought that was something Momoa signed on a comic. Did they both say it?

That DCEU marketing tactic sure didn't age well anyway...

@Nightwing1015 - Yea they both did it just as you mentioned.
