James Gunn Says There Are Currently "No Plans" For Anyone To Replace Margot Robbie As Harley Quinn In The DCU

Despite Margot Robbie recently suggesting that she might be done with the role, James Gunn has now responded by saying there are no current plans for anyone else to play the character in the DCU...

Fans have been wondering about the status of Margot Robbie's take on Harley Quinn heading in to James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DCU. Rumors have suggested that the Barbie star has already agreed to reprise the role, but more recently, the actress seemed to suggest that she might be ready to move on from the character.

"I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her," Robbie told Variety. "Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, 'What are they going to do with her?' The options are endless."

We know that the new DCU currently being developed will serve as a relaunch of Warner Bros.' previous DC Comics-based universe, but recent developments have pointed to a "semi-reboot," with some characters/actors sticking around and others being replaced.

For example, we know that Gunn is now working on a second season of Peacemaker and a spin-off focusing on Viola Davis' Amanda Waller. In addition, Gal Gadot recently claimed that she was set to return as Wonder Woman for a third movie set in the DCU (although this was later refuted by the trades).

Now, Gunn has responded to Robbie's comments on Threads.

"I haven’t talked to Margot about Harley for a long time. But I’d love to work with her again as Harley or as someone else. There are no plans at this time for anyone else to play Harley (I mean, other than in Todd’s movie or the animated show/s.)"

Something tells us we haven't seen the last of Robbie's Quinn, but when and where she could show up again is anyone's guess.

Gunn has previously confirmed that there will not be a direct sequel to The Suicide Squad, but it would be a real shame if we didn't get to see more of the likes of Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Ratcatcher (Daniela Melchior) and King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) down the line.

"The government sends the most dangerous supervillains in the world -- Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, Harley Quinn and others -- to the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Armed with high-tech weapons, they trek through the dangerous jungle on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Col. Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave."

...that statement could literally just mean they don't have plans at all for Harley yet. He even said he hasn't talked to robbie about the role.

@Origame - Yup, very much a no plans to use that character at all yet so not even considered who will play her if an when she does appear in the new DCU.

@Apophis71 - if they wait too long Robbie is gonna start lookin like an older lady

@lazlodaytona - This is true, she will in fact be an older lady tomorrow than she is today, lol. I think more the point this is kinda a non-story in regard to casting and more an apparant confirmation the there are zero plans for the character to appear in the next few years currently within the DCU (ie other than the animated series and otherworld Joker films).

@Origame - yeah but after Barbie, you know the suits are demanding she comes back. I'm here for it, she's a delight lol

Origame - 1/5/2024, 11:16 AM
@bobevanz - maybe. But it doesn't even matter because they're treating dc studios as it's own thing with Gunn and Safran as the two highest people involved.

Not a fan of trashy Harley. the 90s and arkham versions were the only ones I liked, the others versions were just bargain bin d1ckess joker deadpool wanna bees

"arkham versions" - @harryba11zack

Where the "phuck" do you think the trashy version started? It didn't start in 1992. It didn't even start in Harley's more "trashy" comic book origin in...her comic book debut. It start3d in 2009 in Batman Arkham Asylum all the way through to Batman Arkham Knight, and just took off from there.

"arkham versions"

The irony of you saying this, when THAT is what started her descent, is amazing. Harley was never s3en, or portrayed, as whorish, until Bwtman Arkham Asylum 2009 came around. It hasn't been the same ever since.

@videovac - bs, the trashy shit hit with the new 52. what was trashy about her in arkham?

Why would they drop their highest grossing actor/actress in the DCEU/DCU?

HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 1/5/2024, 10:24 AM
@slickrickdesigns - Too expensive to keep + her last 2 films for DC bombed and most importantly it's a reboot and she isn't James Gunn's wife.
TheOtherOn
TheOtherOn - 1/6/2024, 2:41 AM
@HashTagSwagg - Her salary could obviously be the major reason but those DC movies flopping was anything but her fault. To many, she was still the highlight of those movies and one of the very few positives.

"the highlight of those movies" - @TheOtherOn

A highlight, but not a highlight enough to stop the flop. She is grossly over-rated and not worth a tenth of what Barbie made.

@videovac - It's ok to not like someone and have a different opinion.

Anybody else just kinda wish Gunn would shut up? I feel we may as well be in the DCU boardroom meetings with the amount he feels to pointlessly overshare?

I know he liked to debunk a rumour or two on Guardians, but was he ever this bad?

Its time for someone else to take on the part. Samara Weaving OR Mia Goth would be cool.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 1/5/2024, 11:59 AM
@GhostDog - of those 2 i like Samara.

However, with the slate of movies/shows coming up... Harley isnt needed at all so they can keep her on the shelf until the time calls for it... and Robbie can go and make other movies

@MotherGooseUPus - Yea you could wait to add Harley to a later Batman project as a reintroduction of sorts. We have yet to get that from her character in a meaningful way, interacting with bats on the big screen.

Maybe do an easter egg in BATB and then try to weave her into another future film.
