Recent rumors indicated that The Flash actress Sasha Calle would not be reprising the role of Kara Zor-El for the planned DC Studios reboot, and we now have confirmation that DC Studios will soon begin the search to find our new Woman of Tomorrow.
According to Deadline, screen-tests will get underway next month, and Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly are in the mix - although the report mentions that "there is a chance that the studio could make a straight offer to a movie star."
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is involved in the casting process, of course, as the trade also confirms that this new take on the Girl of Steel will make her debut in an earlier DCU project, which means there's a decent chance the character will show up in Superman: Legacy.
The search for a director to helm Woman of Tomorrow is ongoing.
Alcock will be best known for playing the younger Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on the first season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon. Jones played the lead in Apple's Best Picture winner, CODA, and has also appeared in Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth and Netflix series Locke & Key. Donnelly stars in Disney Channel’s Zombies franchise, and already has some experience with Supergirl having voiced the hero in the Legion of Superheroes and Justice League – Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One animated movies.
Gunn and Peter Safran announced the Supergirl reboot during their studio press day in January of last year. The project will be at least partially based on Tom King’s comic book series from 2022.
Said Gunn at the time, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
Superman: Legacy is set to commence production at some point next month, so Supergirl's casting will likely be announced by then.
