Supergirl Writer Explains The Biggest Changes From The Comics, Including Why [Spoiler] Was Cut

Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira has broken down some of the biggest changes she made to the Woman of Tomorrow comic, including Krem's motivations, the movie's ending, and Comet's absence.

DC Studios' Supergirl movie makes some big changes to the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic book it once shared a name with (the Woman of Tomorrow subtitle was dropped last summer).

Not all of those have sat well with fans of the eight-issue limited series, especially as the expectation was that the movie would be a direct adaptation. Ultimately, the main thing they have in common is characters like Ruthye and Krem of the Yellow Hills.

The latter goes from being a muscular, red-headed space pirate to something more along the lines of a Ravager in Guardians of the Galaxy. His dashing good looks are replaced with a face covered in metal studs, though that is more in keeping with Supergirl's grungy tone.

While the change to his appearance hasn't been explained, Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira has revealed why she wrote him as leader of the Brigands—a group he's only tangentially associated with on the page—reimagined here as an all-male group of sex traffickers.

"It's a crazy change," she started. "In the comic, Krem's just a guy, and he's not even a Brigand, but all of that for a movie is too complicated. You have two hours; you have to make everything one idea."

"We couldn't have Krem be a world destroyer because we wanted to keep it all within the same story," Nogueira added, justifying the decision not to show him committing genocide "because it was so far in the past, it didn't feel immediate to the story."

"I wanted something that could have our girls specifically be threatened," she notes, "because otherwise I don't know why the Brigands would even get caught up. And then it all clicked together: The Brigands are all men, so how do they continue to be Brigands? There's something that they need. So it was this thing that checked all of those boxes and felt connected to the characters."

Another controversial change sees Supergirl kill Krem after stabbing him in the neck and chest. While his death was deserved, it's a big change from what's on the page, where Kara Zor-El and Ruthye decide to send him to the Phantom Zone for 300 years (the comic's message is about why taking revenge is ultimately destructive).

However, Nogueira reveals that James Gunn, Peter Safran, Craig Gillespie, and Milly Alcock were all on board with Supergirl delivering the killing blow to Krem.

"Milly was never like, 'Why does she do this?' Milly was always like, 'She has to do this,'" the writer confirms. "She has to define herself differently than Superman."

"She has to say, 'I have my own morality. I have my own sense of goodness, and actually, my ability to discern when I'm gonna take somebody off the map is a power I have. I don't have a rule that you have. I have my own guidance, and I know this is the right thing to do. And the fact that I've been through it all gives me the ability to do this.'"

Finally, Nogueira addressed the decision not to include Comet the Super-Horse. He also plays a pivotal role in the comic; Krypto is never actually dying (Kara pretends so she can join Ruthye on her revenge mission and talk her out of taking vengeance), but Krem kills Comet, which nearly causes Supergirl to murder the big bad. Ruthye intervenes and stops her, revealing what she's learned from the Kriptonian about revenge.

"I love Comet the horse," Nogueira notes. "It's a lot to ask of a general audience to bring in Comet the horse, but I know people love Comet. There's so much that the general population would go, 'What? There's suddenly a horse?' And then for comics [fans], they're so happy Comet showed up, but anybody else going to see the movie would be like, 'I don't understand.' I couldn't do a horse and a dog."

Supergirl is now playing in theaters. How do you feel about these changes from the comics? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Main issues in the DCU so far have been a genocide in the middle east, sex traffickers and Nazi’s.. will algae in a reflecting pool be the big villains of Teen Titans?

@Matchesz - You should go read Absolute Green Arrow lol. The Absolute version of Jubal Slade (from the old Hard Traveling Heroes comic) is a wealthy investor with an island where he trafficks girls. No word yet on whether or not he's a Mossad agent.

@Matchesz - Lanterns is about racism. Clayface is about Ozempic. I guess Gunn just watches CNN to come up with movie ideas.

The Authority movie was probably cancelled when he realized that none of them are immigrants.

Her intention was probably in the right direction but JFC was her execution piss poor. If Gunn is smart, he will remove her from Wonder Woman as soon as possible.

@TheLobster - Gunn isn't the type of person who course corrects; he'd rather burn the entire brand to the ground rather than admit he did something wrong.

@TheLobster - The movie was badly written ....Superman wasn't written very well either but Supergirl was next level badly written.

Supergirl was a bad merge of True Grit,Mad Max Fury Road and Hancock with a James Gunn look and flow/feel.Just a bad movie to have to sit and watch.

I have zero interest in what happens or where Supergirl's story goes now...just zero interest.I'm not that interest in Gunn's Superman either based on what I saw last summer but interest in Supergirl now is zero.

@jst5 - Yeah the movie is bad on so many levels. I think I read somewhere that they used an AI prompt to write the script. Well that would explain it. The studio really doesnt care about the IP.

@jst5 - great way to describe the movie, thanks. now i know what to prepare for. ill still watch it and make my own decision, but this is good.

also, the writer is a former actress with basically no writing experience... how the hell did anyone think it would go well??

Me and the wife enjoyed it a lot. Maybe it’s because I have no ties to the character and never bought a Supergirl comic book or read any of the different series. But I loved rockstar Kara and her struggle with losing everything. She kicked a lot of ass in this movie - both with and without powers (with a sword!) - and I liked where she ended up at the end. And I’m really enjoying the sci-fi side of the Super Family. The aliens, ships, robots… really fun shift.

I only bumped into her calling Superman “my cousin Clark” — why shouldn’t she call him Kal-El? It even said Clark on the call when they did the video chat. Just struck me as odd.

@ElJefe - I think it's because this version of Kara never knew him as baby Kal-El on Krypton. A disappointing result of the DCU going down the route of having her born in Argo City after Kryton was destroyed and Superman was sent to Earth.

It's the DCU baby. Too late to start caring about the GA now. The last movie had a Justice Gang.

It's the 2nd film with Krypto the super-dog it's not a huge leap from that to have a magic horse show up to help out in their mission, but I don't think the Super-Horse would have fit the tone and style the movie went for. I expect the real story is that they floated keeping the horse and someone smartly said they can't fit a big CGI horse into the budget. lol

I don't mind tying Krem with the Brigands, she's right the movie needs to streamline things in service of flow and time. As for her other point about how the Brigands get "caught up", well you already covered that when you made Krem part of the Brigands: Krem kills Ruth's family and shoots Krypto, now the Brigands are involved because they won't give up one of their own.

The way this lady is dismissing so many comic fans and general audiences with a casual wave is insane. Including themes from the comics she's supposedly pulling from, but missing the actual point.

She's the most coveted comic movie writer?

"Milly was never like, 'Why does she do this?' Milly was always like, 'She has to do this,'" the writer confirms. "She has to define herself differently than Superman."

And the way to stand apart from her cousin is by getting her hands bloody as she delivers her own type of justice? That is not a superhero, that's an outlaw and a lethal one. If Superman stands for Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow does DCU Kara advocates for "Judge, Jury and Executioner"? Because that's what they're essentially saying.

Girl, your take on the character officially has no morality nor sense of goodness once she starts taking the law into her own hands and does whatever she wants. This isn't Supergirl, this is The Punisher. And worse when she's terrible at what she preaches to Ruthye about why revenge isn't the answwer. A two-faced Maiden of Murderer is what we've got here.

How come every single person behind this film absolutely got it wrong when it comes to understanding Supergirl's character and worse when they had a comic book as the source material to get this iteration right. Instead they just did whatever the heck they wanted. All these years across from both Marvel AND DC TV shows that have been telling us from every angle possible why superheroes shouldn't and can't kill completely went over their heads.

I could post countless examples from Arrow's 5th Season when Oliver finally confronted his darkness regarding why he was killing in the 1st Season and how it damaged him or how traumatizing it was when Kate Kane killed someone in Batwoman S1, etc of why this is messed up. Like damn, what happened to Daredevil S1 when Father Lantom told Matt that "another man's evil does not make you good"? Or how Logan's final words to Laura in "Logan" about not letting them turning her into a weapon? Or how Stargirl maturely approached the inner conflict that Yolanda/Wildcat faced after killing Brainwave?

Hello Gunn/Gillespie/Alcock/Nogueira?

Black Lightning's Jennifer explained it well enough in favor of her father, the eponymous character.

And as for not including Comet, c'mon that's a load of crap. Suddenly realism kicks in? You already introduced a green baby from Metamorpho in Superman and Peacemaker's stupid eagle is connected some astral plane but we're drawing the line at a space horse?

My God.
