MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT Director Christopher McQuarrie Would Helm MAN OF STEEL 2 If Henry Cavill Asked

With conversations about Man of Steel 2 re-emerging, Henry Cavill’s Mission Impossible: Fallout director has revealed that he’d happily helm the film if the star wanted him to. More past the jump...

It's been half a decade now since Henry Cavill's Superman debuted in 2013's Man of Steel and though we've seen the character since in both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and last year's Justice League, we've yet to have a direct solo follow-up for the Last Son of Krypton.

Movement on that front seems to be happening, however, with Warner Bros apparently wanting to make Superman the connecive lynchpin of their universe and with Cavill reportedly renewing his contract revealing that "there is a whole style of Superman's character that I'm very keen to tell and I'm looking forward to the opportunity."

It was also revealed that while on the set of the upcoming Mission Impossible: Fallout the actor spoke frequently with writer / director Chris McQuarrie about the character. Interestingly enough McQuarrie was at one time rumored to be in talks to helm a Green Lantern Corps film for the studio.

Both this and the recent comments from Cavill about "having lots of conversations, behind-the-scenes with certain people" about a Man of Steel 2 led many to speculate that these involved McQuarrie potentially helming the project.

Now in a new interview with CinePop, when asked whether he'd be interested in directing a superhero film, McQuarrie revealed "I've never really thought about it. I feel like if the story was right and the character was right - I love working with Henry, Henry's great."

This last point led the interview to press on the possibility of him directing a Man of Steel 2 with McQuarrie stating "If Henry asked me to, sure, why not?"

What do you think? Would you like to see Chris McQuarrie direct Man of Steel 2? What would you like to see for that film? Leave your thoughts below.

I think there is a huge clamour for another solo Superman movie and provided they get the right Director it could be amazing.

The ideal Superman I would say is a mixture of Reeves version and the version we got on MOS, somewhere in between.

@SimplyAz - Or, you know, they could just dig into the comics to get a pretty good sense of the “perfect” Superman. Part of the problem is that the people trying to adapt Superman only ever look to Donner and either want to do Donner or do the opposite, when there is a very rich body of comic book stories in which Superman acts more or less consistently. That’s the Superman they need to adapt (and note, I said adapt, not copy).

@DerekLake -

Let's hope the next Director and Writers are Superman fans who read the comics

Tough to explain how Clark Kent is back, still haven't, it needs a great writer, keep it smaller, we need to get to know Clark Kent and Lois, let's see some journalism, a thriller with an earth bound threat, a terrorist type, a lunatic, Kryptonite is Supermans second weakness after people, he cares so much it's been used against him, no big Alien threat, no Brainiac, too soon, hostages, bombs type of situations, maybe a character like Toy Man, he could be creepy if done right.

@ARMUS - Also redeem Lex Luthor in it, Eiesenberg is nobody's ideal Lex, he's a square peg in a round hole, would've preferred a Liev Shrieber type, but they've Gotta make him work, he has to be cleared of any guilt over the events of the terrible BvS, he creates a patsy, possibly in a deal with Waller, he can't have a record or no President Luthor down the road, he's the most important DC villian, too smart to be blamed, he also has to change his entire performance, my god he was bad.

Wow! Never thought of it but Liev Shrieber is a great actor to play Luthor!

Always thought so, shave his head he's a dead ringer for the animated version, even sounds like him, appropriate age, he's played Orson Welles playing Charles Foster Kane, Citzen Kane as a megalomaniac is very Lex Luthor, but unfortunately we have Eiesenberg lol.

Well then ask Henry. An actual great modern Superman movie would be amazing to actually see. And it makes all the sense in the world to make Superman the lynchpin of this universe.

I’d be keen to see this happen. Henry gets Superman, I honestly believe he could deliver a definitive live action Superman if given the chance to truly go for it. I think it’s the self indulgent execs at WB that keep screwing it up. They always want to have their input. They need to just butt out and let the people who know this character do their thing. I’m also down for McQuarrie to direct it. If you have an actor and director combo that are both in sync with each other then you stand a better chance of a great outcome. Make it so WB!

YES!!!! No idea how /if they'll explain Clark Kent returning from the dead when his death was in the papers specifically naming him but I'd love another Superman movie with Cavill and McQuarrie seems like a great fit so who cares?!

Corey Stoll would make a great Lex Luthor. He pretty much played a Lex type already as the villain in Ant-Man.

@gremlin22 - So did Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane. But when DC hires someone associated with the MCU, there’s backlash because it’s DC. Warner Bros. needs to hire the right talent...but Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor can be a great villain with better writing.

Story by Geoff Johns (and someone more experienced in movie telling if necessary). Get the characters and basic story right. Johns may never be a producer of Feige’s quality, but he knows the characters and knows how to write excellent stories. Hire great script writers, whether Johns should be one of them, I am not sure. Let. Johns have some actual control this time. WB execs, back off.
Get a great director and finally unleash Cavill’s passion for the character.

Nope, kill it, bury it, throw it in rice, doesn't matter. Anything in the DCEU at this point is growing on salted earth which due to the failures of the past will pigeonhole any good effort in the future.

I'm not of the belief that things must start perfectly, but at this point there are little more than broken pieces and distractions left on the board.

Chris would probably make a great Supes movie, but no Superman movie deserves to be burdened with this universes baggage or this actor

@OmegaDaGrodd - I know. Fox should have given up on Jackman’s Wolverine after Wolverine Origins.

There is ONLY one way to save the DC film universe and get it back to its place of glory. That is to scrap everything that occurred after Man of Steel and build on the foundation of the Dark Knight films and Man of Steel.

The DCEU is flailing around like a dying fish. As far as a director for Man of Steel 2. My first pick would be Jeff Nichols.

@Forthas - Nah, keep Wonder Woman as well, especially since it's mainly about her, with only one small reference to Bruce Wayne. But I always thought that Batman Begins should have been the start to the DCEU & that if Rises hadn't happened, it would be possible to bring Superman into that universe.

Before anyone says "It was set in a world without superpowers!", so was the 20 years of backstory for the DCEU Batman (Killer Croc being the possibly metahuman exception depending on when he showed up). Then aliens showed up & the rules changed.

Man of Steel was a solid enough foundation for Superman & the DCEU, could have been improved upon. But it went left quickly.

@TDKRnry88 - I COMPLETELY agree (except for the part about Wonder Woman).

The only thing with Wonder Woman is that even though the movie was good, it was really sloppy when it comes to grounding the film (which does not mean it has to reflect reality) but at least offer an explanation for powers or science fiction gadgetry. Even Man of Steel touched upon why Superman was the way he was. In Wonder Woman, it is never explained WHY she is the way she is or even what are her powers except through some throw away line that she is the daughter of Zeus. She does miraculous things in front of people and their response is very casual...like "Oh! That's cool!"

Don't get me wrong. On balance I liked Wonder Woman, I just think that tonally it does not fit the grounded world of either Man of Steel or The Dark Knight movies.

I would absolutely love for Henry Cavill to come back as Superman. Unfortunately, the more I think about the things that define the Superman character, the more I realize that Snyder’s Superman (and the character David Goyer originally wrote) was built on a faulty foundation. And the only way to set the Superman character right, while also making him a credible and well-written character, is to reboot with a much, much better foundation.
