Reports from Man of Steel casting call/ Plano, Illinois/ Possible first set pics!

Loyal CBM member Jake Rapp traveled to Chicago, Illinois yesterday (6/25/2011) for the Man of Steel extras casting call. I spoke with him on the phone last night and here is what he had to report:

The casting call was quick and methodical. People were lined around the block to get in. He was one of the first to go. They were taking five people at a time, asking two or three simple questions, taking the application, and then snapping a picture of each applicant. Jake said that while it was exciting, it was over before he knew it.

This is where the story gets good. Jake decided, since he had the rest of the day to play around, he would drive to Plano. The small town will be the double for Smallville in the upcoming Superman film. This is what he saw:

Plano is a very “Norman Rockwell” type small town. Perfect for Smallville. Jake said that he drove around a bit just getting a feel for the town. He decided to stop and ask a police officer if he had any info about filming. The officer reported that there were some temporary structures being built in town that were to be used for the Man of Steel filming. He also explained that the site for the Kent farm had not been revealed, but suggested that it would be close to town. The officer also said that they had all been informed that their town would only be featured in about fifteen minutes of the film.

Jake had a Plano resident confirm what he had been told about the buildings and filming. Below are what could be the first possible set pics from Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot, Man of Steel. Jake reported that there was security present, so he couldn’t get too close. These are pics from his cell phone.

You will notice that one of the buildings has a tree growing right in the middle. This is another sign that the structure is temporary and will be torn down after filming.

A big thanks to Jake Rapp for the phone interview and pics! Also, thanks Jake for providing me with my geek out moment of the week.

Thanks for publishing my story! You should have seen me on site. I was going crazy. The drive was totally worth it. Another hour farther away from Ohio and gas was mostly $3.89 - $4.19 per gallon, but I may just have to go back again. Wish me luck on getting an extra part everyone! (Hopefully paid and I get to be on screen for at least 2 seconds!)

Dude you should definitely go back when they start filming. Good luck on your extra part.

Only 15 minutes of Smallville? Sounds good to me! I wanna see more of Krypton and Superman. I wonder what these structures are for.

Good luck on getting that part! Hopefully we'll be able to see more set pics from you!

Pretty sure the top buildings are The Talon ;p In a word: underwhelming. I remember all the dumpsters Poni had from the set of GL (also underwhelming).

yea I also applied to be an extra in Chicago. I agree it was over extremely quickly. A 30 minute bus ride for being there for 7 minutes haha.

@OmegaBlack13 How'd you like your bus ride? Mine was a very scary experience lol. I swear I had the worst bus driver ever.

Well, we're getting news, casting rumors, confirmed cast with unspecified role, and now some potential set pics of Smallville. I'm exciting that much is certain.

I also concur with JULEZ13, 15 minutes is good enough not a minute more if it's true. Hopefully it will at least be a good Superman movie, I know there will be some needed action, I just hope we get great performances and a well developed story. This movie needs to do well I hope it exceeds expectations despite how may feel about the cast and the obvious foul-ups with Snyder.

I have my hopes up that's for sure.

@ShadowlordSavage:

Wow, perfectly said. I couldn't agree more. superman78 and I were talking when I was telling him about my trip, and we talked about what possible story lines they would go with (probably Birthright) and how a big chunk of the movie might be Jor-El and Zod on a more futuristic Krypton. I think THAT is something that Snyder would be so awesome at as long as the story doesn't suck, like Sucker Punch. That was an awful abomination and should have never been made. And yeah, the less Smallville time, the better, although I do hope Jonathan Kent lives, I like those story lines a lot better.
ShadowlordSavage
ShadowlordSavage - 6/26/2011, 5:57 PM
Yeah and that would be something new that hasn't been done since Lois and Clark and the animated series so I hope there isn't a PA Kent kill off in this one. Besides it seems to me Supes is the most himself when he's with his parents it would be good to see more of that human side of him and it helps to connect him better with the audience too.

"Krypton made me Superman, but Earth makes me human."-Byrne's Man of Steel Vol. 1 It may not be exactly how it goes, but that's pretty much it.

@ShadowlordSavage @Wallymandius88

I agree. I think the reason Pa Kent is killed off though in other versions is to give Superman a compelling reason to help people ("All those powers, and I couldn't even save him.")

Superheroes are best when there's a compelling reason for them to become heroes (Batman losing his parents; Tony Stark nearly dying & [in the film] seeing the evils of the world & his work up close), rather than when they just, for no good reason, decide to good (e.g., Thor. Granted, I enjoyed that movie, but puppy love is NOT a reason to become a hero).
ShadowlordSavage
ShadowlordSavage - 6/26/2011, 8:10 PM
@Phlegmbot you do have a point, but it's one of the things that's kind of been done a little too many times. I mean they're already using Zod again they could at least give something new in regard to Supes' origin at least in this movie adaptation.

John Kent can still be a driving force for him wanting to save the world and it would be cool to see how proud he is of his son flying and saving people, being that symbol of hope he and his wife helped make him. As much as I may not like it a little they may play around with Superman still feeling like an outsider a bit searching for his purpose in this world, you know the "why am I here," type deal. Doesn't mean he'll be all gloomy about, but perhaps what compels Superman in general is seeing people suffer and knowing he has the power to save when no else can.

Imagine a devastating event happening that he could have avoided, but because of fear of people seeing him as a freak he didn't reveal himself and put a certain level of guilt on him. Jonathan and Martha Kent would bring him encouragement needed to take that leap into become the Man of Steel. Heck even Jor-el and Laura wanting something similar would give an extra push. However the personal reason for why he chose to wear the costume would still be there, the feeling of not wanting to see people hurt when he could do something about it. "The will to act."

The last pic must be a "realistic" fortress of solitude

It has Nolan written all over it

@ShadowlordSavage @Phlegmbot

This is the best discussion I've ever had on here by far. Remember though, Kevin Costner is Jonathan Kent, and why have a really big name actor in a good movie for only 5 minutes? I think Jonathan Kent will live, and his experiences in Africa will be what inspires him (he's gonna bless the rains down in Africa). And Martha Kent has to make the suit too (Diane Lane is a total fox!). The story seems less science-fiction that way, which I really like.

@Phlegmbot, you used my 3rd favorite quote (first 2 being parts of Jor-El's speeches).

ONLY 15 minutes of Smallville???

THANK YOU GOD!!!!

10 years of Smallville was ENOUGH! We need more Krypton and Metropolis in this film and Superman BEING SUPERMAN.

Enter stage LP4. @LP4 Thanks for having something constructive and relatively positive to say and not being an a-hole! :) just messin with you man, but I do agree with you for once lol.

@DeadPOoly01 I'm thinking they're building around the tree for a reason. I have no clue for what yet but If I think of something I'll let you know. I just wish I could've seen what farm they're using.

@CrimsonAvenger If you would've been with me you wouldn't be saying that haha. The townspeople I met were really really weird and I feel like my pics don't give the set justice. They looked like they could chew corn through a fence lol
superman78
superman78 - 6/27/2011, 3:30 PM
Guys, come on. They are building around the tree because the structure is for face value only. There will be no filming inside the structure. Once the shots are taken, the building will be dismantled and the area will be left as it was prior to filming.

@WallyMandius- I always say constructive things, just because you don't agree with me most of the time doesn't make my words any the less constructive.

In fact I'd say EVERYONE on this site says constructive things, it's just not everyone here agrees with everybody else. Like i said- in a way we all say constructive things. I can just as easily say that you never say anything constructive too, doesn't make it true. So please don't say that about ME.

I don't like Routh and I've stated my reasons for such. Most of them were reasons others have agreed with me on. If you don't find my words or thoughts constructive that is fine but it doesn't mean you have to insult me on here out of the blue. As for being positive, I have been very positive on this site but obviously if it comes to a topic i don't like, i'm not going to be positive. Lots of people on this site are like that. If you want me to be a drone who just agrees with you 100% then you're out of luck pal.

And hey- if so sue me if I wanted an ACTUAL REBOOT for Superman. I know you loved routh and all but bringing back that steamy-turd of an indie-actor wouldn't qualify this film as a REBOOT which is what it should aspire to BE.

That's been my main point since I first joined this site and it shall remain so for the remainder of my stay here.

If you obviously aren't a fan of reboots like many of the routh-bootists that is fine but for most of us, we've WAITED and WAITED for a proper reboot.

I'm defending Superman because I know the franchise is capable of reaching GREAT HEIGHTS and it's fans like ME who are trying to keep Superman RELEVANT for a modern society.

Case and point @LP4. I make a joke and you retort like a total asshole. Jesus man, take a chill pill. I was just saying you weren't being as much of an offensive prick with that comment but obviously that didn't last long. Learn how to take a joke. Didn't a recent poll on here show that you are the most disliked user on this site? I wouldn't mind you expressing your opinions in an offensive way, but its the fact that you're an asshole to every other user on this site. GET THE SAND OUT OF YOUR VAGINA AND LEARN HOW TO TAKE A JOKE.

P.S. - Read my previous comment again. I didn't say you never have anything constructive to say, you just do it in a way that tears others down and pisses everyone off. No one likes you.
LP4
LP4 - 6/28/2011, 5:35 PM
@Wallymandius- Hey at least I got on the poll unlike you. It only goes to show that what...maybe 100 or more people liked ME more than you. Also Grif beat me in that lame poll because Grif is the most well known fan-favorite here on CBM nobody can beat Grif in a poll. But the sheer fact I was put in the poll and there were many who voted for me, it only proves I'm more well-known AND regarded on here than you can ever hope to be. Oh and for the record- I never used cuss words on you so don't use that on me you immature PRAT.

Oh and you're also wrong, lots of people have been agreeing with my articles as of late and are starting to see things MY way now. You lose. Oh and furthermore routhbootist don't bother seeing the new film since you never even supported a proper reboot.

LP4
LP4 - 6/28/2011, 5:45 PM
Furthermore- I reported your ass to CBM. Keep up the trashtalk Wallymandius and you'll be welcoming some new troll icons. You're only making MY day.

Oh and I emailed nate and jim about you.

Oh no @LP4! Not some emails and troll icons! Like I really give a crap dude. For the record I never said I disagree with everything you say. You make valid points and I do agree with some things you say, I just don't like the way you say them. And also for the record, I'd rather not be known than be known as a jerkweed. You're being just as immature, but hey, that's part of what the Internet is for! And porn (another joke, I hope you laughed at that one). Yes we all know you hated Routh with a passion and I supported him, but that ship sailed long ago dude. I'm not holding on to that, I let it go and have accepted something new. So I stand by what I said before. GET THE SAND OUT OF YOUR VAGINA! And no one likes you, even if they do agree with you.

You be good and have a good day :)
