SUPERMAN: LEGACY - James Gunn May Be Eyeing A GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Star To Play "Apex" Lex Luthor

More details have been revealed about the Superman: Legacy casting process, and it sounds like James Gunn is considering at least one Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star to take on the role of Lex Luthor.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will remain at the top of the U.S. box office this weekend, but filmmaker James Gunn is already turning his attention to Superman: Legacy, the DC Studios movie that promises to set the tone for the new DCU.

Following yesterday's casting news, Deadline has weighed in by revealing that Nicholas Hoult (Dark Phoenix), David Corenswet (Pearl), Jacob Elordi (Euphoria), and Andrew Richardson (Extrapolations) are indeed among those being eyed to play the Man of Steel.

As for Lois Lane, the trade reiterates that Emma Mackey (Barbie), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton), and Samara Weaving (Scream VI) have tested for the role, with the last of those submitted on May 4. Gunn is watching every single tape, though a decision is unlikely to be made for some time.

More details have been revealed about his plans for Lex Luthor too.

Apparently, the role has been dubbed "Apex" in casting calls, a possible nod to the Apex Lex Luthor. In the comic books, he gained the powers of an alien after a shard of tenth metal made him every bit as formidable as Martian Manhunter. With that, he was strong enough to kill the Justice League!

It's also been revealed that a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star is among those being considered to play the villain. We're guessing Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista are unlikely, but both Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji both make sense.

Gunn, meanwhile, has also weighed in on the ongoing Superman: Legacy casting process.

Superman: Legacy is set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.

Bradley Cooper as Lex?

Poulter, Cooper, or Iwuji as Lex all make some sense. I doubt Cooper would do it though. Rocket was a very convenient, low maintenance-ish role. Iwuji was already in Peacemaker too so that leaves Poulter. I could see him as a younger Lex

He has the piercing stare and threatening vibe for it

@GhostDog - idk, gene hackman played lex and he was one of the greatest actors working back then - so i can see cooper saying yes. He’s doing a Bullitt sequel with spielberg pretty soon though, which might create scheduling issues

@tmp3 - you’re right. But the commitment is where I feel like he may waver. Rocket isn’t a tough one. A few days in a recording booth

Idk what to think of Bullit sequel but Speilberg isn’t a bad get for that by any means.

@GhostDog - yeah, i keep forgetting gunn’s strange promise of a 10 year contract for all actors. Assuming that happens, i can see it hurting their chances of getting bigger names but we’ll see

@tmp3 - 10 years off the rip is crazy. Early MCU handled contracts like extensions mostly. And they did it by picture not years. Stan had the longest I think at 9.

So Hoult is rumored for Clark and Lex? Hmm

Wyatt Oleff (young Peter) as Lex?

He's 19, worked w Gunn, and could be an interesting take on the character if done well.

Maybe Gunn is getting Michael Rosenbaum to return to the role.

@TheIronDuck - that was kinda what I was thinking as well. If they're keeping actors from the DCEU in the same roles, can't see why they couldn't with other DC actors

@TheIronDuck - Would be cool but maybe a bit too confusing for the general audience tbh.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - Only as confusing as Viola Davis back as Waller, etc.
Superspecialawesomeguy
Superspecialawesomeguy - 5/14/2023, 2:58 PM
@ObserverIO - Not really considering we had just seen Viola Davis in the first Suicide Squad not that long ago before seeing her in the reboot/sequel, whereas the last time people saw Rosenbaum as Luthor was from a tv show that was taken off the air 12 years ago.

@Superspecialawesomeguy - True, but by that measure we've got Keaton coming up and he hasn't played Batman in over 30 years. Of course that's specifically a multiversey, timey-wimey thing, but since the Flashpoint is what sets up the new new universe they could just use that as an excuse to take various actors from DC's past to come together in this new version f their main canon universe.

I do think that the whole world will be watching The Flash and so it's gonna be the biggest point of reference for the GA. If The Flash movie says that all previous versions of DC are back in play and then a Flashpoint happens and a new universe is created then that's all the explanation the GA are gonna need.

@Asterisk - Interesting...Martin Scorsese made a film called the "Wolf of Wall Street" made in the same style as his much praised films "Casino" and "Goodfellas" which did not include "that Di Nero guy". It was successful critically acclaimed proving their is no need to continuously cast Deniro in every film other than to support a crony.

@Forthas - I've worked in the film industry before, if you work well with an actor it's always better to go with a safe bet rather than an unknown. I definitely see where you are coming from. I'd love to see some new faces added to Gunn's wheelhouse. However, Lex is a significant role and Gunn wants an actor who he knows will play ball.
Forthas
Forthas - 5/14/2023, 11:54 AM
@MisterKite - I am not unsympathetic to people hiring individuals they feel comfortable working with...hell if I were his position, I would probably do it to some small degree... But I would absolutley draw the line when it became a disservice to the company that employs me or to fans. Gunn takes it to an extreme and he does it at other people's expense.

Ten years ago I wrote an editorial on this site because Zack Snyder replaced Christian Bale as the Batman for the DCEU. This was complete cronyism run amok. Bale had already proven to be a popular Batman (the most popular) and had earned the right to continue in the role. Affleck (who was at the time good friends with the President of Warner Brothers) was shamelessly added to the role over the objections of fans and under the guise that Snyder had some "creative" reason to make the change. That was bull crap!!! And as I have been saying for the past ten-years that fateful decision started the downfall of the studio, lost money for its shareholders and the people that were once employed with the studio had their reputations and career opportunities blemished.

Fast foward to the present, and Gunn is doing the SAME THING all over again and is blowing smoke up peoples behind by claiming he needs to replace Henry Cavill for a new "creative" direction despite the fact he is the most popular Superman anywhere and has a large dedicated fan base. The studio is now put in the position that they have to HOPE a new Superman will be embraced as much as Cavill was. Gunn's fake proclamations that they need to start over is clearly a lie since he is keeping Viola Davis, Margot Robbie and his wife among others who were ALL part of the previous DC Universe. Here is another case in which his decisions are self serving and not in service of his employers or the fans.

@Forthas - Nolan also used the same actors in all his movies lol!

It’s almost like directors like working with people that they work well with. Weird.
Forthas
Forthas - 5/14/2023, 12:09 PM
@MrDandy - @RolandD - "Nolan also used the same actors in all his movies"

Why would that be a good thing?

Out of a cast of upwards of 20-30 people, Nolan might use 2 - 5 people he worked with before. Gunn used almost 20 of the same people in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 as he used in The Suicide Squad including 2 members (four altogether) of his own family.

Meassage to all those strugling actors...you need to befriend or marry into the family of James Gunn to be in his films.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 5/14/2023, 1:54 PM
@Forthas - Nolan puts members of his family in his films too. Go to imdb and search for the word Nolan in all his cast lists it would make you vomit all over your keyboard at the amount of family members he involves.
Forthas
Forthas - 5/14/2023, 2:28 PM
@ObserverIO - I don't understand why people keep brining up Nolan. He has cast his uncle in his films - John Nolan who happenes to be an established actor before Christopher Nolan was born. Other than that, I am not aware of any other person in his family that he cast. That stated Christopher Nolan is just as wrong, unless his uncle does not take a salary for his films. No matter who does it, it is STILL WRONG!

@ShimmyShimmyYA - I just want remind everyone why Warner Brothers DC superhero universe is a laughingstock, the company has been sold twice and counting and the fan base has turned on them.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 5/14/2023, 6:34 PM
@Forthas - has 0 to do with not bringing bale and Nolan (both who didn’t want to + that Batman hit its story end + literally didn’t fit in a world with powered people)

Has everything to do with Snyder being trash at managing a universe and his fake high brow ideas of superheroes as a mythological collection
