The first trailer for Lionsgate and director Rupert Sanders' new take on The Crow was released earlier this week, and while the action packed and surprisingly gory footage went over well enough with some, it's probably accurate to say that the majority of fans weren't overly impressed (to say the least).

To be fair, any remake or reinterpretation of The Crow was always going to be heavily scrutinized by the loyal fans of Alex Proyas' beloved '90s adaptation starring the late Brandon Lee, and those first promo images featuring Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven had already come in for a lot of backlash.

So, was the trailer really that bad?

Opinions will obviously vary, but even leaving aside the decision to basically ignore the moody, Gothic tone of the original (that song choice is just flat out bizarre), this teaser gives off generic supernatural action movie vibes, and fans simply expected more.

You may feel the reaction has been a bit harsh, but the people have spoken, and the trailer received a massive 53,000 dislikes (compared to 42,000 likes) on YouTube after being online for just over 24 hours.

Have another look at the trailer below.

Proyas was never on board with a direct remake, which he made very clear during an interview shortly after the project was announced.

"The Crow would not be a movie worth 'remaking' if it wasn’t for Brandon Lee," said the filmmaker. "If it wasn’t for Brandon you may never have even heard of this poignant little underground comic. It is Brandon’s movie."

"I believe it is a special case where Hollywood should just let it remain a testament to a man’s immense talent and ultimate sacrifice - and not have others re-write that story or add to it. I know sequels were made, and TV shows, and what have you, but the notion of 'rebooting' this story, and the original character - a character Brandon gave life to at too high a cost – seems wrong to me."

The synopsis reads: "Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right."

The movie will also star Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger in undisclosed roles. Zach Baylin and Will Schneider penned the script.

The new take on The Crow will hit theaters on June 7, 2024.

@kazuma - The original is no masterpiece. It's a beloved movie, but in even a few short years no one will care about this remake, whether it is good or bad. If anything, folks over-hyping the original may leave you feeling underwhelmed if/when you watch it.

I LOVE the original but I’m willing to give this adaption a chance. Skarsgard has been good in everything the last few years he deserves a chance.

Seriously this lacks any of The Crow’s identity

Take off the makeup and it can be mistaken for any generic supernatural revenge movie

And really douldnt they get more creative than using a gun

@dracula - “more creative than using a gun”… what is this complaint 😂

Seriously, the white makeup doesn’t make the character.

That’s what happens when you turn the Crow into Machine Gun Kelly cosplaying as Letos Joker. 🤷‍♂️

@Forthas - I thought the trailer looked dated and kinda like a dated sony-verse film. The auto tune at the end of the trailer was cringe

@AmazingFILMporg - I get a John Wick vibe.

I think the problem with this film and other reboots that they have to overcome is that it is going to be compared fairly or not to the original and most popular iteration. I am trying to come at it with as open a mind as I can so I don't have any preconcieved expecations. When I do compare it to the Brandon Lee version then this looks like a bad ripoff, but I think that If I had not seen the original I would probably have an even higher regard for it than I do. I am inthe middle and will try to temper my biasis until the film comes out.

Don't be so open minded your brain falls out💁.

We literally compare everything in life and when you remake something it comes with the territory. If you don't want the criticism make original content 🖖

There's literally zero reason to remake the Crow, since not only is there nothing a remake could improve upon, there's an in-universe lore justification to tell as many stories as you want with new and unique main characters baked into it.
dracula
dracula - 3/16/2024, 10:09 PM
@FinnishDude - hell, every crow story has a different protagonists, including at least 1 female protagonists

So if they want to take from the source material, there is plenty of material to pick from
ThouBear8
ThouBear8 - 3/16/2024, 11:48 PM
@FinnishDude - I completely agree with this. It's such an easy premise to just add another story to, there's no reason to remake the story about Eric Draven, especially since the original is damn near perfect in my eyes.

It's a tricky one because the comic isn't popular at all so good luck adapting it and the original movie is so beloved that good luck redoing it and not pissing off fans of it.
With that said, I need to watch this trailer but I've just not been motivated to do so.

AmazingFILMporg - 3/16/2024, 10:13 PM
The original crow was so iconic even Nolan payed homage in the dark knight when joker crashes the crime boss meeting 💪

The problem with adapting crow is that the original is a basic plot and the director knew that so it's visual flair stood out more. The city is alive in that film. It feels like it's own character. The characters in the film are so charismatic even down to the basic goons.

When you decide to remake such a visually stunning movie you better come correct. Based on the trailer this looks like basic trash!🤡

@AmazingFILMporg - There's also the Bat-symbol made out of fire in The Dark Knight Rises. They did it in Daredevil too as a direct homage to The Crow. And the Thomas Jane Punisher and other things over the years.

One way they could've avoided major backlash of the shit trailer they dropped besides getting a better writer and director was to have the events of the original crow be Canon to the story. Make Brandon Lee's character a urban legend that way you don't get the main character comparison. Also hire the cinematographer of The Batman.💁

@AmazingFILMporg - this I would've been on board with. It's the same issue I had with the Ghostbusters remake like 8 years ago. Why remake a film like that? If you must, just add something that's either loosely or directly connected to the original.

What is the justification for this Crow remake's existence? Is there anything that they're likely to improve upon? Or are they just hoping to draw in viewers with a known IP? Spoiler alert, it's the latter.

Would've been cool if they did a different spin on the revenge angle.

What if the crow revenge tale was not a love story but a soldier that is seeking revenge for being involved in a unjustified war?

A patient in a hospital killed by a crazy doctor?

A family massacred by a cartel while on vacation in Mexico?

A family killed by negligence by a big corporation like an airline or car company?

Anything to put a new spin on things💁
