THOR: Go Back To The God Of Thunder's Origin With Alternate Designs For Loki, Odin, The Destroyer, And More
Today, we're taking a look at some rarely seen THOR concept art featuring some alternate takes on a variety of characters, many of whom look unrecognisable compared to what we ended up with back in 2011.
Thor's hammer Mjolnir made its big screen debut before the God of Thunder himself and it's now been seven years since Chris Hemsworth first suited up as the Odinson. Since then, he's appeared in a number of movies and last year's Thor: Ragnarok finally established both the actor and character as an MVP of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as did the recently released epic, Avengers: Infinity War.
With that now in theaters, we're taking a look back at 2011's THOR and some of the alternate designs for how the characters could have looked in the movie which was directed by Kenneth Branagh.
Below, you'll find alternate designs for the likes of Loki, Odin, Heimdall, Sif, and The Destroyer, and it's definitely interesting seeing just how much all of them could have differed, especially as these takes are so different to what ended up on the big screen all those years ago. So, to check out these awesome pieces of concept art, all you guys have to do is click on the "View List" button to check them out.
Loki
This doesn't look like the most practical of costumes for poor Tom Hiddleston to wear but it does look downright awesome and is visually very distinctive compared to the version we ended up with.
This is pretty much the sort of costume you can imagine Loki wearing during the Dark Ages but seeing as we never went that far back into the past, I'm not sure this version would have worked in the movie.
This take on Loki's costume appears to have been inspired by the sort of armour you can imagine a villainous King Arthur wearing! It's a nice take on the God of Mischief but where's his helmet got to?
It appears as if this piece of artwork was created after Tom Hiddleston was cast as this version of Loki bears a striking resemblance to his version of the character and the use of blue here works really well.
Loki is more than capable of giving Doctor Strange a run for his money when it comes to magical prowess and he looks every bit the sorcerer here. It also appears as he's quite a bit older as well.
This piece definitely appears to have been inspired by Esad Ribic's comic book artwork but I think it's fair to say that a lot of female Marvel fans are glad they went with the handsome Tom Hiddleston.
A toned down take on the God of Mischief, this wouldn't have been a particularly exciting take on the character in THOR and I'm glad that Marvel ultimately decided to stick a little closer to the comics.
Odin
A gorgeous shot of Odin, it's a shame we didn't get to see a little more of Anthony Hopkins in action but that opening sequence did a great job of showing how formidable the King of Asgard once was.
This is pretty close to what we ended up seeing on screen and it's fair to say that Odin looks great here. Anthony Hopkins did a great job in the role but that sadly seemed to decrease as time went on.
A heavily armoured take on Asgard's King, this is another costume which looks simply fantastic on the page but arguably wouldn't have been very practical for the actor to wear while on set.
This is hugely different to what we ended up seeing in THOR but it could have worked. It just would have required Marvel taking this franchise in another direction with an alternate colour palette.
Odin looks like he's stepped straight out of the comic books in this shot and it appears as if Marvel had Anthony Hopkins in mind for the role from the very start despite those Brian Blessed talks.
Heimdall
Poor Idris Elba has always been wasted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and while Heimdall has had his moments, he's definitely been underutilised. Based on this, he could have looked cooler too!
There was no sign of Sif in Thor: Ragnarok or Avengers: Infinity War, so her future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains very much up in the air. Here, we see some different takes on her costume.
The Destroyer
Bringing The Destroyer was a very smart move on Marvel's part and while an argument could be made that he should have been a little more formidable, his presence made for a very cool fight scene.
An imposing creation, The Destroyer returning to the MCU somewhere down the line would be awesome, especially if Thor were to incorporate its armour into his own to power up.
Here, we get to see the various stages The Destroyer went through before unleashing his fiery powers on the God of Thunder after Loki sent it to Earth to get rid of his brother once and for all.
