THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Director Taika Waititi Describes Christian Bale's Gorr As Marvel's "Best Villain"

We still haven't seen Gorr the God Butcher in action, but Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi seems confident that fans will embrace the character as "the best villain that Marvel's ever had."

He may be a little biased, but Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi is teasing big things from Gorr the God Butcher!

Gorr didn't actually appear in the recent trailer, so aside from some blurry set photos and a Marvel Legends action figure, we haven't had a proper look at Christian Bale as the powerful baddie. Fans seemed to be a little disappointed with his rather bland character design, though, especially as he looks so much cooler in the comics.

While he may not look particularly formidable or intimidating, Waititi believes he might just turn out to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe's best villain.

“It’s a great, really fun, weird little group of heroes, a new team for Thor with Korg, Valkyrie and The Mighty Thor," the filmmaker said during an interview with AP News. "And, in my humble opinion, we have probably the best villain that Marvel’s ever had in Christian Bale.”

Again, Waititi is hardly going to be objective here, but it's nice to know that the filmmaker has full confidence in Love and Thunder's antagonist all the same. The Jojo Rabbit director also revealed that the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) will experience a midlife crisis of sorts in the movie.

"Thor is just trying to figure out his purpose, trying to figure out exactly who he is and why he’s a hero or whether he should be a hero. I guess you could call it a midlife crisis.”

Thor: Love and Thunder finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.

Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit) and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, Thor: Love and Thunder opens in theaters July 8, 2022.

@SonOfAGif - Did you REALLY say Hela and Mysterio were good villains? 🤢🤮

"That's not really a high bar" actually hits 2 birds with one stone here, one being the crappy villains in MCU and other being the blind brainwashed/braindead MCU fan bois who think otherwise.

@SonOfAGif - "I want a safe pass... through the anus."

WOW, what a great villain Loki is. Definitely lives up to his comic counterpart, who would lead legions of the dead on the ship Naglfar to battle Asgardians at Ragnarok.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - You have one hell of a point there, I even hated in the loki series how the most powerful version of him only did illusions. Like they really made him powerless, this is supposed to be Loki you know the evil god who knows a shit tons of spells and mystic shit and also a god. He's really mids and if it wasnt for Tom Hiddleston this character would be horrible.

Marvel got a hell of a performance out of a legend like Tony Leung but also wasted Mads Mikkelsen. Could go either way.

I know it's comics accurate, but I hate they call her Thor. Thor isn't a title or a mantle or a symbol, it's his name. Should have been Mighty Jane or Worthy Jane. Or God of Thunder is a title, Jane: Godess of Thunder.
Origame
Origame - 5/4/2022, 7:47 PM
@ElricReturns - or even just giving her own identity, like lightning lass (ok that example was lame but you get my point).

It's what I'm noticing with all the insisting these white characters should be race swapped, or replaced with a minority version. They only see legitimacy in the white male characters rather than developing different racial superheroes or, in this case, different gendered superheroes.
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 5/4/2022, 7:52 PM
@Origame - I was about to write all that too, but I've ranted about that so much here. But I 100% agree. And further more it's insulting to say the only way a minority character can be popular is by inheriting the established legacy of a white male hero.
Origame
Origame - 5/4/2022, 8:06 PM
@ElricReturns - exactly. Like instead of making a black superman movie, why not adapt icon? Or try a remake of meteor man?

@ElricReturns - "“Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor."

Says to me that whoever has it has his power, if so why shouldn't have the title? I'm fine as long as there is a prefix. As in Mighty Thor, War Thor, etc. If it walks like a duck and quacks like duck, then its fine to call it a duck.
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 5/5/2022, 6:30 AM
@MarDCel - "if they introduce am original poc supheroine character" ... No one buys new characters for the most part; that's the biggest problem. I honestly don't mind legacy characters, but it loses its pizzaz if done too much.
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 5/5/2022, 6:35 AM
@Origame - What's wrong with an alternate Superman? Calvin Ellis's world is interesting. I'd welcome something unique.

I wonder if you'd have the same reaction if they were doing Red Son? It's just a different take on the character rather than a replacement.
Origame
Origame - 5/5/2022, 6:52 AM
@EgoEgor - while Calvin Ellis is unique, why does he need to be superman?
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 5/5/2022, 6:56 AM
@Origame - That's the decision DC and the writers involved made. They wanted to tell an alternate story of Superman and you need your character to be Superman in order to do that.

This isn't replacing Clark, this is an alternate take, which anyone should be ok with. And if your not then that's fine, but realize it's not trying to replace Clark Kent.
Origame
Origame - 5/5/2022, 7:04 AM
@EgoEgor - I'm not saying it's a replacement. And a one and done thing is one thing. But now every superhero has an alternate race or gender swapped version. And 9 times out of 10, the character is simply that original character but lame since they gotta bring in social politics.

And not only that but it's taking away the actual original minority superheroes who get adapted. Icon is a fascinating character, but it's black superman that's getting the movie.
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 5/5/2022, 7:48 AM
@Origame - Comics have done this all the time. New characters replace old versions; Barry replacing Jay, Hal replacing Scott, etc. Honestly, that's what I think they should do. Start over completely with new versions of some of the characters, but people would probably be more pissed off by that then the mantle being taken over by minority characters... theres 3 reasons why I thats happening.

1. Fans don't want a new reboot, they're attached to a lot of these characters.
2. It's hard, very hard to sell a new comic line and have it compete with the top runs(Spider-Man, Superman, Wolverine, etc). Do you think Miles Morales would be big if he wasn’t introduced as an alternate Spider-Man? What about Spider-Gwen? Or Gwen Pool?New characters rarely survive. They’ve tried, but the legacy characters survive because they inhabit the name and/or world of the original hero.
3. Its easier to sell people on the top characters while also pushing diversity, you might not agree with it but it's effective. I like Icon, but it’s obvious why they’re making a black Superman movie and not Icon; because people will buy it.

To me, there is definitely an issue with diversity in comic book characters. It's just the product of its time. I'm all for pushing diversity and I honestly do not mind swapping genders or race of established characters; so long as their race wasn't important to the story (ie, Black Panther being black and Thor Odinson being white for cultural reasons). But I honestly couldn't careless if Clark o Peter Parker was black, asian or white; who they are have nothing to do with their skin color.

Personally, I think sometimes the creators involved believe that diversity is the selling point, when diversity is the spice and the story/characters/world is wha really should be sold Diversity should never be put ahead of quality storytelling, but it should be things that Marvel and DC focus push, imo. Not only that, but having diverse characters allows for more diverse stories.

So personally, I would absolutely welcome a Calvin Ellis Superman, I think it would be a interesting. I also think they should do Red Son.

Also, sorry for the length. I’m impressed you made this far through my rambling.
Origame
Origame - 5/5/2022, 7:51 AM
@EgoEgor - in other words, they only see legitimacy in white male characters. Considering the benchmark for characters to adapt to film is at ant man, why is it so hard to just find an originally black superhero?

In fact marvel had one with falcon, but then made him the sloppy second of captain america and treated that as a promotion.
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 5/5/2022, 8:34 AM
@Origame - Superman and Spider-Man don't sell because they're "white male characters", they sell because they've been around forever and more people know about them. And writers at that time created more white male characters, plain and simple.

Its the same reason why Black Panther comics sold, even well before the massive hit film. Established characters sell, PERIOD. Readers will buy what they know.

You're seeing it as a "black vs white" thing, while I see it as what it is; building diversity through, hopefully quality content that actually sells. For example the Kamela Khan series was great, but giving her the moniker of Miss Marvel allows the content to sell based on familiar association. You think it would have sold as much if she was called some generic name? Obviously not.

This is why characters like Miles Morales or Ironheart are more popular than new characters like Mosaic. They're all new black superheroes. Then people complain why they aren't creating new original content, they are. But readers will buy what they know, plain and simple.

"In fact marvel had one with falcon, but then made him the sloppy second of captain america and treated that as a promotion" Is this a complaint? What? This has happened with Bucky as well. I don't understand what you're complaint here is. This is one of the legacy characters that not only make sense but is an interesting story. Bad example.

But anyways we'll agree to disagree. I honestly don't care. I just think it's funny people care so much about these changes. I welcome diversity, so it's cool with me, as long as the stories and characters are interesting. Love Miles Morales and I think a Calvin Ellis or a Val-Zod inspired film would be interesting.

But agree to disagree. Cheers.

Origame - 5/5/2022, 8:59 AM
@EgoEgor - but it's selling better because of association with a different character. Once people realize it's just a pale imitation they're just gonna go back to the real hero.
EgoEgor
EgoEgor - 5/5/2022, 9:45 AM
@Origame - Sometimes it hits and characters last.

I think Miles Morales is definitely going to last. I think Spider-Gwen might too.

Ironheart might gain popularity from Black Panther 2 and the upcoming tv show. And her moniker is different from Iron Man.

Tim Drake was a legacy character that is probably more liked as Robin than Dick, Todd or Damien.

Barry Allen was a Flash legacy character, and now he is synonymous with The Flash moniker. Wally West as well as both Flash and Kid Flash.

John Stewart is as popular as Hal Jordan today.

Sometimes they hit and last, other times they fall. For example, I think X23 Wolverine was a horrible legacy character that won't last beyond easter eggs or a few episodes an X-Men cartoon. Nor Amadeus Cho's Hulk.
